     NEW YORK CITY

Founded in 1625 by Dutch Colonists, New York City has grown from a small trading port into an international metropolis. New York City is the 3rd most populated city in the world with over 18 million residents living around the metropolitan area. It is America's financial, law, media, fashion, culture, and business capital. NYC is known for it's bright yellow taxi cabs, subway, skyscrapers, hotdog stands (mmmm), bridges, world class museums, architecture, and advertisement. The city owes its success to the millions of immigrants that found opportunity and wealth in this melting pot, bringing along with them their traditions and cultures, creating many American culture movements such as the Harlem Renaissance, abstract expressionism, and Hip Hip Music. Today, Over 170 languages are spoken in the small island of Manhattan.

It all started when architect Gregory Johnson asked 'How high can you build it so it doesn't fall down?' The Empire State Building was constructed during the Depression in 1931, The 102 story art deco skyscraper provided hope and opportunity to a world falling into despair. Crowds watched in awe as the massive skyscraper grew from the ground in less than 13 months. It has been a source of inspiration and beauty for over 70 years, with many photographs and films based around this magnificent structure. Built 20 blocks from the financial center of Manhattan, Many thought it was to be a failure, but today, It stands proud, as the tallest skyscraper in New York City.

Only two buildings ever stood taller...World Trade Center, a complex of 7 buildings designed by American architect Minoru Yamasaki, best known for their two twin towers, stood at the heart of New York's Financial District. Construction for the complex, headed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, was finished in 1973, taking 7 years and thousands of workers. The buildings stood as the tallest skyscrapers in New York City for almost 20 years. On September 11th, 2001, at 8:46 am, Al Qaeda suicide hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 11 into the northern facade of the North Tower. Seventeen minutes later at 9:03 am, a second team of hijackers crashed United Airlines Flight 175 into the South Tower, which collapsed at 9:59 am. The North Tower collapsed at 10:28 am. 3 4 5 6 and 7 WTC were badly damaged/destroyed by the impact. 2,749 people died during these attacks, and bodies are still being found today, almost 6 years after that tragic morning. The WTC site is currently a large construction site, and a memorial called the Freedom Tower is being planned to be built there, and finished by 2010.

The American Museum of Natural History was first founded in 1869 by Theodore Roosevelt Sr, William E. Dodge, Joseph Choate, and J. Pierpont Morgan. The first original building, now hidden in from view due to many buildings in the complex that occupy most of Manhattan Square, was designed by Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould and Frederick Law Olmsted who were working together for new structures around Central Park. The American Museum of Natural History has one of the largest Natural History collections in the world, and a library holding 450,000 volumes of material.

Founded in 1937, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is a modern art museum located on the Upper East Side of New York City on 5th Avenue, overlooking Central Park. Its striking design with a circular ramp makes for an enjoyable evening, allowing easy viewing for some of the finest abstract works ever created. It is one of the more popular museums in New York City's Museum Mile.

Designed by William Van Allen at the center of Midtown, The Chrysler Building was built to house the Chrysler Corporation. Ground breaking for the project began on September 19, 1928, at the time, the builders of New York were in an intense competition to build the world's tallest skyscraper. When William Van Allen heard that 40 Wall Street in downtown was going to be taller than his building, He added a spire measuring 125 feet composed of stainless steel, which was hidden from the public until October 23, 1929. The added height allowed Chrysler to surpass both 40 Wall Street and the Eiffel Tower in height. The Chrysler building was the first building to stand taller than 1,000 feet, however, A year after its opening, The Chrysler Building's title was lost to the Empire State Building.

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States, stretching 5,989 feet over the East River connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn. The Bridge has a center lane open to bicycles and pedestrians, just above the busy automobile traffic. Ever since its grand opening on May 24, 1883, It has become an iconic part of the New York skyline.

Madison Square Garden is a 17,000-seat stadium first opening on February 14, 1968 on 7th Avenue situated on top of Pennsylvania Station. Madison Square Garden is the center for live events, concerts, and cable broadcasting. The Garden's slogan says it itself, It's the World's Most Famous Arena.

The Pan Am Building was the largest commercial office building in the world when it opened on March 7, 1963. It is an important part of the Manhattan skyline and one of the fifty tallest buildings in the United States. Pan American World Airways was the building's owner for many years and it's logo was depicted on a sign on the north and south faces of the building. In 1981, the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company purchased the building from Pan Am. When Pan Am ceased operating in 1991, Metlife replaced the Pan Am logos, and renamed the building the MetLife Building.

    Mike the Mayor: Thank you!

    cleaner475: Thanks!

patriots_1228: Haha, Yeah, You never know, There really hasn't been a good journal that sparked my interest in Simtropolis for a while, I hope that changes soon though. For the tower, just search 'Transamerica' on the STEX, and you'll find it, I'm a little lazy to give you the link, lol.

Mulefisk: Thank you, Yes, Norway is on the list, I'll try not to mess it up 3.gif

As a matter of fact, I did find the building. I had no idea it was there. 4.gif

As for New York, looks great! I couldn't help but notice the little army of taxis on the street. I can't help but wonder how you managed to get so many taxis going like that.

It's nice to see the empire state building come back into light (in simcity, of course). These are probably the finest recreations of SF and NYC there has ever been.

    In short: EXCELLENT!

Amazing stuff. A great idea and look forward to more. It will be interesting to see the cities you select going forward and how you meet the challenge of including/finding city specific lots. Do you rely purely on the STEX etc and/or BAT your own as req'd? Can't wait to see what's next.

    Cheers Dave

Hey! For the record, I wasn't disappointed. What you did there was great. Recreating the hilly parts of San Fransisco is almost impossible without those appalling walls. I just didn't project my comment properly. Sorry.

Thanks for the NYC mini tour, BTW.

New York is such a beautifull city, eh? But where's Broadway and 7th? The lights? The square? The ball? j/k. I realls like the ESB mosaic, what a great building it is. So is Chrysler. This is a great realistic cj. Your city building skills are darn good, but your photoshop skills put this over the top.

Oh, it's an insider between Yoman and I. He had to edit a post at Devotion that said "Damnit." Hehe...

Anyway, New York is looking quite spiffy and pretty accurate. The Metlife building and its surroundings fit it well and the Empire State Bldg. gives off that sense of metropolitan power--even in SC4.

Some of the midtown buildings aren't correct 3.gif But you were working with limited resources, I would've added more pathways to central park also and used dual one way roads for 5th avenue. A very nice job on everything though 4.gif
