Very true Bixel. And those who are complaining about the height restrictions are developers (of course) but surprisingly local residents too, who wanted to cash in on their house by developers. As an urban planner myself, us North Americans would like to see taller more dense buildings, and visiting HK was an inspiration. On the hand, HK has too many tall towers and are placing zoning ordinances to keep buildings from getting taller.

Van1357, I would be very interested in you (any anyone with the skill) doing a HK building. There are so many buildings to tackle, and you've got an audience and fan base. I will post some soon to get more creativity going.

Thanks for the pics Tankmank. My aunt lives in a 'pencil' tower, and I must say its weird. There are only 2 units per floor (Unit A and B). You've got to be great neighbours or else! I am not sure what the maintenance cost might be, because of the upkeep the to elevator, common areas (which isn't much, maybe 4 large marble tiles) and electricity. And don't forget the security guards. The unit my aunt lives in is actually quite spacious, considering how thin it is. The unit has 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, a kitchen and a living/dining room.

Cool pics. So many interesting buildings in HK... It make Ottawa look boring. Oh wait. Ottawa has mostly boring and unispired buildings (except a few of the old ones).

Tokyo is a grey mess, which could be charming in it's own, uniquely urbanistic way...

Tankmank!!! Plz, learn how to put links in the messages… the way you do it now completely screws up things… It is rather simple – write something like “a panoramic view of Mumbai” , then select it and click on link icon (globe with two chain links) and put your link in pop up window.

If done correctly it should look like this:
    Or
A panoramic view of Mumbai - here -
and here is one, may be not of a skyline, but on a ground level of Shanhai39.gif

No problemo, tankmank!! Glad to be of service!! But to make it noticeable the you have link (as there for the panoramas of Mumbay you may want to somehow bring it up, like use all CAPS, Or bigger font size or make them BOLD

BTW are we bringing Moscow to the fold of ASIA now?? I’m totally for it, btw, there is a lot of large scale constructions is going there, more then anywhere in EUROPE by far… so it MUST be ASIA!

BTW do you speak Russian?? I see you have quite a few pictures from Russian edition of Google…

Burj Dubai when announced was suppose to be something like 610 or 660m tall (just a few m tall then planed tower of Russia (by SOM) for Moscow which was supposed to be 648m tall, it was (Tower of Russia) very premature6 country itself was in a midst of deep economic crisis. Now Burj Dubai has grown to more then 800m tall!! Will be interesting to see how tall will it finally gets.. I doubt thought that if it will really be 800+ m tall they could finish it by December31st 2008, but who knows. Anyway wish them luck it will be truly global achievement as people and companies from around the world are giving it’s best for that project!

Did Tankman delete his post or something?

Anyway, my dads from Mumbai. It's really polluted, and traffic is the worst in the world! You don't know traffic until you've been there. 24 hr honking, no matter where you are. Really. You can barely sleep on the first 5 floors. They are finally building an extensive subway system, with an extensive EL rail system (taking from the greatness of Chicago) They are also expanding the heavy rail system. BTW, its expected to be the second largest city in the world by 2015 or 2020. I really don't think it's gonna grow much larger with that kinda hellish traffic. But the city is huge! You can see the smog from that picture.

    Ending note - DUBAI SUCKS!!

Tankmank: I always thought that Google is Google, (apart from chinese version that is) and you should find same things regardless from which particular portal you do the search... am i wrong?

SC4Noobie: why such a sad attitude towards Dubai?? Just curious...

I also frequently use search engines in different language because they do give some different reults... I use google.hk for finding images of asian buildings, because it does give some different results.

EDIT: phew, a new page... it was needed because all those pics on the last one were making it take forever to load... not that I mind! 3.gif

1,024 kBit/s ADSL - but it's still a pain in the neck to wait till a page full of pictures has fully loaded, especially when some of the servers where the pics are hosted are going through a bottleneck situation.

That's why I usually stick to thumbnails when I show some stuff, even if it is within the ST limits. Of course, that means some work when you get pix from totally different online sources. Then again, directly linking those pics here puts a strain not only on our i-net connections, but also on the respective hosting servers, and it causes them some traffic.

so, you make thumbnails yourself? Hm.. should we institute a policy about this things?? I'm on 8MBit/s ADSL, so it doesn't really bother me.. yes sometimes there is a need to wait a bit, but that's life... you always wait somewhere for something. Remain calm... I was sitting in the plane on runway in Barcelona the other day for 1,5 hours, hearing from the pilot that we are going to take off every 10 min.. and with all things happening in London just few days ago some people were getting very nervous... but what can you do? if it's gona get you it will...

Don't forget that you can use your cell phone in the subway (good or bad, your own opinion). Also, many malls and private/public places have Wifi. Who would have guessed that Olympic Plaza 1 and 2 (a shopping mall) has wifi services???
