i am happy where i am right now in the best of the worst (voted best city to live in Great Britain by some property thingy) Edinburgh with the restored Waverly station the preserved victorian architecture and if you love the 60s there is appleton tower  (university) and the st. james shopping centre and some "progressive" architecture such as the scottish parliment for all those people who like upsde down boats covered in bamboo

to be honest, even though i live here, i think ireland is the best place to live,In 2005, Ireland was ranked the best place to live in the world, according to a "quality of life" assessment by Economist magazine. It´s not that my hometown is the greatest place on earth but i like it there and as i sad Bercelona is much more beautiful. When I was 12 i was there for the first time and i was fascinated of the city. The catalan culture, the catalan way of live and the fact that there are parrots living in the threes of the main boulevard. I will be in Lloret next summer and i´m looking foward to see the torre agbar for the first time i think it is a great building.

Actually the TGV doesn't go to the UK, only Eurostar. A TGV train cannot get through the channel tunnel for safety reasons as passengers cannot get from one end to the other unlike Eurostar. quote>

I dislike Australia, I don't know why it's so high on everyones charts. We only have a small portion of suitable land for agriculture, let alone the current 21.5 million people that live here.

Personally I'd love to live in Germany, France, Switzerland, England,Sweden, Norway or Austria.

In seriousness, does anyone think that in Asia there might be a very rapid suburbanization/urban exodus that occured in the US. A lot of the economic factors that create dense cities in this part of the world are based on industrialization and people being fairly poor, that is they HAVE TO live in tiny spaces within walking distance of their workplace.

Does anyone else wonder if the arrival of chain retail, the car, the post-industrial service economy, will pull apart pieces of the traditional urban fabric of small shops and apartment communities. With one or more of these elements missing city centers will sink into dysfunction with crime and empty streets and further the suburban flight.

As for, Oceania, meh. Australia just sucks. All the animals there are really weird and can kill you, even the furry ones. Seriously, what is up with Platypuses, I mean, a half duck, half beaver, lays EGGS, with VENOM in their TOENAILS? I mean what the hell?

I'm choosing America.  I'm a city guy so thats kinda why America's the best, because it has the best cities.  America is a country of immigrants so its very diverse and cultural.  Some of the best cities are the historic ones that span the east coast like Philadelphia, New York, and Boston.  There are other great American cities like San Francisco, Chicago, and Miami.  Other less know cities that represent America well include Cleveland, Minneapolis, and Atlanta.  Also, America has the NFL and there's nothing better than football

A post-industrial service economy is not inevitable in Asia. The heavy industry will only move out if there is somewhere cheaper to go. Currently the only option would be Africa, but most parts of Africa do not have the infrastructure and stability to support that level of industry.

You also have to consider the sheer density of population in Asia. Take Japan for example, a wealthy country with a modern economy, but with such a huge population and little suitable land massive cities are the only option.

I will always live in America, as much as I pick on it's flaws, nothing can beat it. My city of choice would be Chicago. Being a person who likes an urban atmosphere I would pick Chicago. Much of it's urban core hasn't been touched by decay like many other American cities.

Yea! Australia's number 3, but the highest english-speaking country. Most people probably wont live in another area if they are living in a city already and neither would I. What's to see? Other than beaches I dont care. But if I had to choose anywhere else, Id probably choose London or Seattle. Only two other places because the rest of Europe is too racist, and Seattle because its very well planned and just beutiful. But other than that, I think Sydney is great! Its really expensive so that means it has to be good.

My vote goes for Europe! And if I would have to choose my favorite city, it's Paris, bien sûr  It's just fantastic (I've lived there one year). But now it's time for a change, so I'm moving to Singapore! Asia, I'm coming...

As i've grown up in Ireland and spend summers in New York, i think i've had best of both worlds, I love Ireland its true my family in Ireland are all very close and there's nothing better then driving to the west (galway,dingle) for surfing and amazing views...

but now im finishing college here i am actually moving to New York for a couple of years. I love the feeling of New York, it has a sort of energizing buzz, But then New York is very different form the rest of the U.S ..

like when my mom comes to Ireland and is asked if she's american she always responds 'No New Yorker'

By the way those people saying that the northern european countries are such lovely to live in... Finland is the country with the highest suicide rating in the world...

And this is because of the moody weather and climate. Really, have you been to somewhere with a mediterranean climate, such as California or Australia? Try it.

I live in a small town in America, about 400 miles from New York City and Chicago. It is a nice place to live, but I would love to live in a major city. I "lived" in the UK for three months for university. I loved the city of Winchester. I am a huge history buff. I went to London every weekend and absolutely fell in love with it. I would love to move over there to get my PhD and then maybe elsewhere. The British accent is also a plus. I am casting my vote for Europe.

I live in Delft, a really old University city in the Randstad in the Netherlands. I've seen quite some places around the globe and totally loved all of them, but somehow the only place I'd move to outside of the Netherlands is Stockholm, Sweden. I really like the atmosphere of peace and tranquillity there. Also the people there are really nice and I love the language!

I really wouldn't want to live in Asia, the Mediterranean people are too uncalm for my likings and I don't like the American way of living, with the abnormal amounts of food and the extreme lazyness (drive-thru ATM's?).

Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark are the acceptable countries for me.

Surverys mean nothing and are rather subjective. I could of course quote the fact that Ireland was classed as the most desirable place to live by The Economist....so as you can see surveys are not the greatest thing on which to judge a nation.

The UN Development Index is now rather outdated seeing as Iceland has went to hell and its economy collapsed and really....not that attractive anymore as a place to live

I live and enjoy living in Europe, one of the most historic and culturally significant regions on the planet filled with culture and beautiful cities. In addition to gorgeous landscapes while still having areas that remain small, peaceful and rather quaint.

I select Europe with my second choice being Canada.

Ireland is in a bad place right now but by no means are we the worst in Europe...

every country in the world is affected by the global downturn and yes Ireland has suffered more because of the building boom going bust and having an open economy but we are still an attractive place to do business in, with the hardest working work force and the best tax rates in the EU. Ireland will recover from the downturn just like every other country and I think we will come out a stronger more prosperous country for it...

I'm catalan too!! I live 20 kilometers northwest Barcelona and I think it's a good place to live. We are near a great city but still have not the big problems of Barcelona... But I wouldn't say it's the BEST place to live; we've got a 19th century rail system (Renfe, you know well...), overcrowded schools and a Spanish goverment that lies more than talks and takes Catalan people's money away. Well, I'm not going to speak more about politics... Nothing to say about climate, Mediterranean climate is way the most balanced, not extreme cold, not extreme hot.

If I had to choose between Europe vs America vs Asia vs Oceania... Europe's history, America's vision of things and life, Asia's skyscrapers and Oceania's beaches.
