About This File

This is a recompilation of Sawtooth's Region Census. That version was made over two decades ago and still works fine if your region size is not humongous. I found that with the extremely large regions, it would fail to load and generate an image.

So, I decompiled the application, made some compatibility changes for Python 2.7 (I suspect the original was 2.3), and verified its functionality with large regions. Other than that, it is faithful to the original application - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Note that this was compiled with 64-bit Python 2.7, and you might need VC++ 2008 Redistributable (64-bit) installed for it to function, try it and see. Tested on Windows 11.

Region Census is pointed at a region folder and can report information about the cities in the region as well as generate region images. Region images can be saved as JPG or PNG formats and a thumbnail option is available as well.

Data that can be read and exported to CSV for importing into spreadsheet applications is: City Name, Mayor Name, Residential, Commercial, Industrial Population, City Funds and Tile Size (small, medium, large).

Images may be displayed in City Tile View, Traffic View (Rush Hour only), and be configured to show borders, city names and mayor names.

I'm having trouble getting this new version to work, namely the following error message:

Quote

Errors occurred:

The logfile 'C:\Program Files (x86)\RegionCensus\RegionCensus.exe.log' could not be opened: [Errno 13] Permission denied: 'C:\\ProgramFiles (x86)\\Region Census\\RegionCensus.exe.log'

Any advice or guidance on how to fix this part?

Try installing it outside of the Program Files. I put my SC4 apps in a D:\Games\SC4 Apps folder (except for those that require Program Files like PIM-X).  The permissions is a clue that it's a Windows thing.

Second technical support comment! Now the problem I notice is the program isn't saving JPGs directly, only the source PNG version of the city / region view files! Seems I have something else unresolved in my installation if this is happening.

This is the error log message I'm getting:
