About This File
Greetings to my fellow simtropolitan mayors!
This file provides SimCity 4 players and mapmakers with a different topographic legend for use in SimCity 4 Mapper 2013. The legend was designed to provide a high variation in colors at lower elevations to turn the SC4M generated regional preview into a useful topographic map. Be on the look-out for future new topographic legends geared for other applications!
Installation Instructions
Go to the installation folder of SC4 Mapper 2013 (C:\Program Files (x86)\SC4 Mapper 2013) and look for the file named basicColors.ini. This is a simple text file which includes the hex triplet color legend for specific elevations. Take this file and back it up at a different location. Extract the files from the compressed .zip folder, then place the custom topographic legend, also named basicColors.ini. Swap the files whenever you want to return to the original look.
Comparison with the Default Topographic Legend
The topographic legend included in SC4 Mapper 2013 consists of very similar shades of green. This gives the terrain a natural look for more lush climates, but it does not provide sufficient granularity in distinguishing the elevation, especially below 200 meters above sea level (below 450 meters above SimCity 4 level when using the terrainquery cheat). Check the previews and see for yourself how much more useful this view is for advanced gameplay purposes. The additional level of detail is useful for in-game projects requiring precision terraforming, or for when the player wants to be certain about how a terrain mod will interact with the topography before using it. Released
The custom topographic legend finally reaches publication readiness! Changes since the 0.80 draft include:
-
Color for the 200m elevation range turned into a lime green, to provide better distinction from the adjacent 300 m yellow.
-
More detail has been provided for the shallow water portions, including an aqua green for the shallowest waters (0-7m) and shifting the darkest blue to 150m to denote properly deep waters from that point onwards.
