About This File

The Zillertal is one of the great inner-alpine valleys in Tyrol, Austria. It branches off the Inn valley in a southerly direction. The northern Zillertal has a pre-alpine character, while the south is dominated by the massive, glaciated ridge of the Zillertal Alps. This map has a vertical drop of 3,000m – nearly 10,000ft. The highest peak is Hochfeiler (3,510m – 11516 ft), the lowest point is found near the town of Woergl (500m – 1640ft). Despite this spectacular topography, large parts of the map are easy to build on, since the valleys are wide and gently sloped, densely populated, but still to a great extent covered by agriculture.

There are lots of small and tiny towns in this map, each of them with a unique history. Schwaz used to be a booming metropolis in the middle ages, gaining its wealth from silver mining and trans-alpine trade. Rattenberg, the smallest town in Austria, is well-known for receiving little-to-no sunlight during the winter, since mountains cast a permanent shadow on it. Woergl is an important traffic junction for railways and motorways. Mayrhofen, the “capital” of Zillertal, is a hot spot for winter and summer tourism, surrounded by a network of cable cars and ski slopes.

This map is 8x16 large city tiles in size. It was created using 1-arc-second DEM-data and 16-bit mapping technology, which makes it 100% height and scale accurate. 250 meters of height were added for the proper SC4 sea level.
