About This File
The Zillertal is one of the great inner-alpine valleys in Tyrol, Austria. This map features the central and southern part of it. The first 30km of the Zillertal are flat and wide, very suitable for settling and farming. The local economy is focused on tourism, especially skiing in winter. A network of four big skiing areas is accessible from nearly every village in the valley. Gourmet restaurants serving local specialties help the farmers to keep up the traditional agriculture. There are numerous huts and shelters for high-alpine hikers in summer. Down in the valley, some industries grew up, including a big sawmill.
In Zell am Ziller, the Gerlos valley branches off to the east, connecting the Zillertal to Mittersill, Kitzbuehel and the Großglockner Region in the federal state of Salzburg via the Gerlos Pass. In Mayrhofen, the Zillertal splits off into several high-alpine valleys. The narrow ones are called “Grund” (e. g. Stillupgrund, Zemmgrund), and they are used for hydroelectric dams, like Stillupspeicher and Schlegeisspeicher. The longest valley, Tuxer Tal, leads to Hintertux, a village with a popular glacier skiing resort.
This map is 8x8 large city tiles in size. It was created using 1-arc-second DEM-data and 16-bit mapping technology, which makes it 100% height and scale accurate. 250 meters of height were added for the proper SC4 sea level.
