Variable Route Buses  1.0

   (58 Reviews)

CorinaMarie

Note: This mod is not compatible with NAM because it alters the same Traffic Simulator exemplar. However, one can edit the NAM's Traffic Simulator property 0xa92356b5 (Travel type can reach destination) Rep # 3 from 0x00 to 0x01 to achieve the same effect while using NAM.

About This File

This is a mod which allows sims to ride the bus directly to work.  With this mod, sims no longer need to ride past their destination to the bus stop.   They still have to board the bus at designated stops, but they can get off anywhere along the route. This is how many municipalities operate bus service in more rural areas with fewer designated stops. According to the route query tool, it appears that for evening commutes, some sims will board the bus at nearby stops, while other sims board the bus right at their workplace. The bus takes them straight to their home, or to a bus stop at the terminal of another transit type. (Such as GLR or Elevated train stations.) This can dramatically increase the effectiveness of bus service, while reducing the number of required stops in commercial and industrial areas. It also reduces commute time, which is the leading cause of abandonment in my cities.

This does seem pretty useful, but upon inspection, this is just a modified MAXIS traffic simulator. Its a good idea and all, but I'm afraid to say that this simulator is not compatable with the NAM simulators or the RHW. 5/5 for effort, 4/5 for usefulness, 1.5/5 for compatability Avg: 3/5 (rounded)

I just changed the value from 0x00 to 0x01 in the "can reach destination" property using Reader.

I have NAM and am using a NAM traffic simulator--can't remember which one--and it all works fine for me. Maybe I'm just lucky...

Also, I didn't really consider RHW, because I rarely use it. However, buses wouldn't usually stop on a highway, would they?

This is a good idea. You should hop onto the NAM team's forum/thread and present it there. They ought to give you some good feedback and ID any compatibility issues. Great work!

Well, changing the "can reach destination" from 0x00 to 0x01 will cause no problems with the RHW. It's the stuff you didn't change that is incompatible--namely, that the RHW capacity is set to 0 in this modified simulator exemplar. (continued . . .)

Further, in order to function, it has to completely override whatever NAM Traffic Plugin the user has installed, meaning that this mod is effectively "NAM-incompatible".

Whelp, thanks for clearing that up, Tarkus. I was merely fooling around with the idea of modding when I came up with this, as I have never modded before. I was bound to leave off something important. Anyone who wants to fix this up and re-release it, feel free to do so.

You should change the description to say it' not compatible with the NAM. If someone were to rerelease it, I say they post versions with the various traffic simulators included.

Its an awful thing that this thing is NAM-incompatible. This is exactly what I needed to make my bus systems more realistic. I would love you if you can make this NAM compatible. If i have to choose between NAM and this, I have to go with NAM 100%. But nice try, please make an update shortly :)

Nice idea, we have a similar bus system around here (Belgian countryside). I'll change the property you set to the traffic simulator I'm using as well.

So it sounds like the concept is NAM-compatible, just this file isn't -- unless someone uses the exact same NAM settings you do? If that's the case, definitely talk with the NAM folks and see if there's a way to easily make it work with everyone's settings, or include it as an option in NAM.

I can't really support this concept. Maxis already made it too easy by not require that mayor's establish bus lines. That a bus line is created because one sim travels between a given pair of stops is crazy! This mod is just too much in the wrong direction.

I just want to point out to those who complain about lack of realism that in every major city I've ridden a bus in (New York, DC, Montreal), there are little strips on the side or some kind of thing that allow you to ask the driver to pull over and let you get out. This is how things work in real life.

To mgrinshpon: They have those in Cincinnati too. But the bus still stops at designated stops only. To the creator: Good concept, however if it were NAM-compatible, I'd download it.

Well I like having the option of this, anything to cut the commute time, I trust the NAM guys can get this fully compatible, nice work.

Man I think of some good ideas to make the game more real but this one I would have never thought of. Give you A+ before even checking it out. I try to get threads going for players to pull together ideas and real buildings from there area none have got many responses. Check them out I'll be putting a new one up soon.

The problem with this idea in general is that buses are no longer restricted to bus routes at all, since they carry just one Sim per bus. You can have bus stops in just one part of your city, but then buses will travel all over the city to deliver their passenger. They essentially become like taxis that you catch at a taxi stand.
