Onsted State Bank, part of the Smalltown, USA Series by JBSimio
Isaac Stoltz opened the very first insurance company in Smalltown decades ago. His modest office and apartment above still stand to this day and are now occupied by his son. Numerous offers of acquisition have been made by the larger national companies, but Paul stays true to his father’s wish and has every intention of passing the business to his son when he retires in the not too distant future.
Onsted State Bank is a small local bank from the next county. When they decided to expand into Smalltown, they were unaware of the red tape involved. The mayor, a long time opponent of sprawling growth, insisted that the new branch move into an existing structure. When OSB finally found one, they presented their remodeling plans to the zoning board. SLICH, (Smalltown Loves Its Charming History) a local preservation watchdog group, argued vehemently against any alterations to the front façade of the historic building. OSB, not wanting to alienate potential clients, finally agreed to the terms and hid their drive through area in the back. They may have found a loop hole where their neon sign is concerned, but most residents have long since gotten over it. In fact, a few of the more simple minded find the red glow “down right purdy.”
