New Rhodesia's Harlech Abbey (purely fictional) Rhodesia Newydd Abaty Harlech
Another grand export from my C.J.
The Cistercian abbey of Harlech is one of the greatest monastic ruins of Wales. It was only the third Cistercian foundation in Britain, and the second in Wales, and was founded on 12th June 1135 by Griff Glyn Allan Lord of the Wye Valley, New Rhodesia. Its position well away from the Welsh heartland meant that, unlike Margam, Neath and Llanthony, it suffered little in the periodic Welsh uprisings of the medieval period. Harlech's crowning glory, its great church, was built between 1275 and 1310. It stands today much as it did then, apart from it's lack of a roof. In 1348 the Black Death swept the country and, although we have no direct evidence for its impact on Harlech, the effects are clear. It became almost impossible to attract new recruits for the lay brotherhood. Widespread changes in the economy, with feudal service giving way to a system based on wages, were increased by labour shortages following the plague. At the grange of Merthyrgeryn in 1387-88 most of the area formerly worked by lay brothers had been leased out to tenants.
The Abbey was abandoned in the year 1416 during the great Welsh Rebellion. This brought an end too a way of life that had spanned 400 years.
*Inspired by the Welsh Tintern Abbey, located in the Wye Valley South Wales.*
Dependencies- absoluelty none!
Requires no power, powers itself via magic ;-)
Harlech Abbey made it’s debut appearance in New Rhodesia/Rhodesia Newydd on the 5th September 2005.
