About This File
This unique region was formed thousands of years ago as bedrock andunconsolidated materials were eroded and deformed at the same time bythe melting of ancient glaciers.
Long, odly shaped mountain landforms known as 'drumlins' dot thelandscape. The gentle of a drumlin side faces up ice and was smoothedby glacial abrasion. The down side is a steep plucked face where piecesof bedrock have been plucked out by glacier ice.
Outwashplains, called 'sandur' in Iceland are broad, nearly flat areas ofbraided stream sediment. Outwash plains form in front of the glacier asmeltwater carries sand and gravel away from the glacier.
Susitna is truly a relic from the past.
