Hello! Someone could model it?

The Ryugyong Hotel (or Ryu-Gyong Hotel or Yu-Kyung Hotel or the 105 Building) is a towering, empty concrete shell that was once intended for use as a hotel in Sojang-dong, in the Potong-gang District of Pyongyang, North Korea. The hotel's name comes from one of the historic names for Pyongyang: Ryugyong, or "capital of willows". Its 105 stories rise to a height of 330 m (1,083 ft), and it boasts some 360,000 m² (3.9 million square feet) of floor space, making it the most prominent feature of the city's skyline and by far the largest structure in the country. Construction started in 1987 and ceased in 1992. If the building were ever completed, it would be the world's tallest hotel and the seventh largest building in the world.[1] However, as of 2006, it remains unfinished and unoccupied, largely because the elevator engineering failed to provide transport to its upper floors. Today, the Rose Tower in Dubai is the tallest hotel in the world at 333 meters (1,093 feet), just passing the Burj al-Arab (also in Dubai at 321 meters (1,053 feet) which was completed in 1999) in 2006 after it was topped out.

The "105 Building" is one of the boldest buildings in Pyongyang.  From a distance, it is a dreadful, if awe-inspiring piece of architecture.  It reminds one of the following passage from George Orwell's book, 1984:The Ministry of Truth—Minitrue, in Newspeak—was startlingly different from any other object in sight.  It was an enormous pyramidal structure of glittering white concrete, soaring up, terrace after terrace, three hundred meters into the air...The Ministry of Truth contained, it was said, three thousand rooms above ground level, and corresponding ramifications below. (from 1984, by George Orwell, c. 1949)

This Pyongyang building is not actually a government ministry or a place of terror, but the Yu-kyung hotel.  In a strange coincidence, it is the same height as the building in 1984 and contains the same number of rooms.

The Ryugyong's planned 3,000 rooms and 7 revolving restaurants were scheduled to open in June 1989 for the World Festival of Youth and Students, but problems with building methods and materials delayed it. Japanese newspapers estimated the cost of construction was $750 million[4]—2% of North Korea's GDP—and it is generally assumed construction came to a halt in 1992 due to lack of funding, acute electricity shortages, and the prevailing famine. Official pictures of Pyongyang often show the building illuminated at night, but this is due to photo manipulation.

The basic structure is complete, but no windows, fixtures, or fittings have been installed, presumably due to the high cost. According to Emporis, the building will never open as presently constructed, partially due to the poor quality of concrete used in its construction making the structure unsafe, and the North Korean government is trying to invite a foreign investment of $300 million to improve and finish the hotel. In the meantime, it has removed the Ryugyong from maps and stamps and built a newer five-star hotel of more conventional design on the Taedong River.

Please read the forum rules before you post.

Firstly, images must not be over 800x600 pixels. If you use ImageShack anyway, why don't you post thumbnails? (This goes to everybody who uses ImageShack, btw) Those masses of big images make it a pain in the neck to open the thread. Not everybody is on a super-fast connection! People in the DSL era tend to forget everything about efficiency (thumbnails of a few kB each) and superfluous bulk (lots of huge pictures all slapped together). If you don't know how to use ImageShack's thumbnail feature with this forum software, go to the "Show us how you use HKABT content" thread for a step-by-step tutorial.

Secondly, this is a building request, and all those requests must be placed in the official BAT request thread. Please remember that the next time. For now, I'm leaving this thread open because it has evolved into a good discussion incidentally. Lateron I might attach the posts to the General Discussion thread.

Thirdly, a friendly reminder about fonts and font sizes: The use of big fonts always leaves a bad taste because it looks as if the poster tried to superimpose himself over others...

That being said, I'll have an eye on this thread, but leave it open for now. Your input here is welcome, scasta1982, but please do read the rules and try to remember what I just wrote here. 2.gif

Please keep all images to a maximum size of 800x600 pixels as stipulated in the Simtropolis forum rules. Thank-you.

As for your request, I cannot speak for everyone, but I can say for myself that I do not have time and will not have time for a long time. I have school and some other projects that I would like to do. This one, even though it is one of the ugliest buildings in the world, I wouldn't mind modeling if I didn't already have other projects lined up. It is definitely unique.

Sorry.

In this condition, this hotel looks really ugly.

But in the plans, it has an blue glass fascade.

Together with the base, it looks really pretty.

In the view of a fan of architecture, this is really tragic what happened there.

is it not absolutely maddening when massive construction projects are pulled halfway through completion. i cannot think of a bigger waste of money. it reminds of down here in Texas where the spent half a billion building a super collidor and abruptly stopped. surely it would be better to follow through with such large projects than to give up on them?

It's not going to be finished.

-Country has no money for that kind of stuff.

-The number of tourists to that entire country, let alone that city, don't justify the capacity of that hotel.

-It's so messed up that demolishing and restarting it would probably be more worthwhile than trying to fix and then finish it.

-They already built a more practical hotel.

I'm afraid that if this will be turn down then nothing as outrageous wouldn't be built no more... It would be quite a pity actually, I personally believe that world at large would benefit from some extra white elephants... Especially when they don't cast shadow on your back garden!

I'll try to find it, Paul.

You can find the structure of the base by google #pictures or google earth.

The base isn't much high, the plan was to install there several restaurants, 1 disco and 1 casino.

About the glass fascade: You can't see the windows (except by night), because the fascade was

abolutely plain. The colour was exactly the same blue simtropolis is using here at the left side.

@paul

Exactly, this is this pic. The base architecture is very tiny in height (not more than 5 storeys I guess), that's the reason why you don't see much of it.

If you want to Bat this, you need a lot of your own phantasie. But it doesn't matter, noone has seen the origin blueprints of this building. There is only one pic in the internet, where you can see a part of the base.

I'll try to find it, so you can see the accurate height of the base.

Oh! white elephant turned out to be a Blue elephant! There is something very egyptian in this thing, and it isn't just pyramidal shape. It is a great pyramid in spirit. And this way soooo out of place in the modern world.

I just googled a little and came up with this picture.

maybe it help to bat it, especially to give an idea of the base:

ryugyonghotel.jpg

unfortunately, it don't show a final look as there's simply NO picture of it showing what it'll look like when it's done, but it give a good idea of the shape and structure of the base so you guys batting it have at least something to work with

@GMT

Yes, this pic is a real good one.

I guess, the whole Lot will be 18 x 14 tiles (minimum), huge.

@SimFox

You are right.

This hotel is a mix between a pyramide and a rocket. Looks like a futuristic idea from the 60's with a touch of asian communist spirit.

@paul

I'm such a $%&^!.

Click on pic #2, there you can figure out the height of the base. It's not complete, you can see on the left the irons. But I guess, they won't put more than one or 2 storeys on that what they have finished until yet.

Even though it is hideous, I'd still build it in my cities... I mean, real cities have ugly buildings, why not sim cities?

I was busy again, and did some measurign work with google earth. I know it's not always 100% exact, but it gives good ideas to estimate.

here you go:

sorry for ugly line in the last image, I had to redraw it from hand so you can see it.

maybe the sizes vary here and there a few meters, but all in all it should be quite correct.
