I opened this thread to put into practice the designs of the places of the books and movies I intend to do from Harry Potter.
I started alone but now andisart and reddonquixote are also part of the project, then we will be posting here about the progress of some BATs. I hope you enjoy.

Cool, yes! We need more fantasy stuff! But dang, you got me with Hogwarts, that was on my list too...

It would be a huge project for sure.

Hogsmead and the Weasley house should be fun!

Nice job on the Dursley house, only two things: I think it needs to be wider and the nightlights are too strong on the window frames and the door (am I right you are using lights inside that shine through a transparent glass?)

Great! Nice to know you want to do Hogwarts too, you are better prepared to do it than me. There are a lot of buildings from HP to do, I think there's only a Quidditch field available to SimCity.

About the house, thank you :) . The width was off the scale, already fixed it. I will test weaker light, and you're right, there's a light inside the room, that's passing through a glass. The effect is not good =/ can you give me some tip to do it better? As it stands it seems that there are no glasses at night.

Wow! Epic! Just remember to change it's name to 4 Privet Drive before release. ;)

Thank you, Borg. I have a great doubt about the name. Like I said, I'll do a version of this house alone as growable. And I will make four terraced houses like Privet Drive as ploppable. So I guess I'll call the terraced houses as Privet Drive, but the alone house I don't know, Dursleys or 4 Privet Drive? That's the question.

Model looks really nice! I'd check that roof texture, though - it seems to be tiling quite a bit.

    looking good Schriefer! :-)

I assume the pic shows zoom 6, right?

The base for the roof texture is good, tho you could remove that one darker brick that seems to create the tiling effect.

What version of Max are you using? Depending on the version you can create composite maps with noise maps overlaying the bricks to create more nuances of different subtle shades and color. That's how I made the roof and walls for the SC13-style homes.

I can show you, how to do it if you want, it's not very difficult.

I have this feeling like the roof is too steep...but I could be wrong here. Anyway, it is a really nice model, I wonder if you could do also that little terrace-like area which was behind the house with benches and plants. It would make the back of the house more interesting :) Also - some furniture in the conservatory would be nice :)

Thank you. I think that darker tile is messing with my roof texture as andisart said.

Thank you again, andisart. You're right, it's in zoom 6, I'm doing it in HD so we can see some details :)
I'll remove the darker tile, it's really messing with my roof texture.
I'm using Max 2014. I can't use a few things in the right way yet, like these maps, I'm waiting to start BAT School, but since you said it's not hard, I would be very grateful if you show me how to do :)

Thank you, Seraf. I'll fix the roof. You wonder and you hit :) As I said I'm doing a version with the gardens and yard of the Dursleys and it's almost done too. I'm doing a version without the gardens and yard just in the case some lotter want to improve and do something better with the model.

Silly me, I should've paid more attention to your post, but I was too excited by new render ;D

Great to hear that the team is bigger and good modelers are onboard, I will certainly watch your progress here, I'm a big fan of HP series :)

Just so you know, you don't need to model Hogwarts. Someone alredly has its avalible to download for free here

If you want  I could check to see if he would let us use it for SC4 and give him credit and all that. I'm checking out the model now! (Its really big)

Wow! That's a great model! I'm seeing here. Andisart is caring of Hogwarts, so he decides what to do about this, maybe he wants to do one by himself, but if he wants that model would be nice too.

Thank you really much to share that with us :)

    That's some nice progress.

For this project on the whole, my only concern is that so much of the Wizarding world is hidden from view. All we might get of the ministry of magic is a phone booth and a public lavatory. St. Mungo's isn't much better (a store front iirc, and it's not even shown I am the movies).

Any ideas on how to tackle these (and maybe show us more than other muggles might see?)

Actually we've made a list of all locations and there are many more than you would think! You'll see ;-)

But we have thought about the major indoor locations too, most prominent the Ministry of Magic. Nothing decided yet, but options would be to have the phone booth for sure and then maybe a cut-open scene of the interior. We'll see.

So I'm starting the prison of Azkaban... Uuuuuuahhh, did you get a chill as well when reading that name, Azkaban?

It frightens me! A place that sucks all the happiness out of you and forces you to relieve your most painful memories, leaving you without any hope...

    Sounds like hell to me!

Azkaban is only shown in film 5. I used screen caps for reference and it is HUGE! Maybe too big for Simcity actually.

I used the shot with Bellatrix to estimate 2 meters distance, then multiplied that to get an estimate of the hole in the wall, then compared that to the full lenght of the tower.

If I am correct, and I cant be off a big lot, the sides are 145meters and the tower should stand at around 200 meters (the height is a guess, since the perspective shown in the film is too distorted to apply the meassurments).

    13466418913_0da4912075_o.jpg

As you can see, the tower would be 9 tiles long and sit on a 10x10 at least, probably more.

I think this is too large and am tending to decrease its size.

These are the references I used:

Great job on Hogsmeade Station, reddonquixote! The textures are perfect!

Andisart, very interesting the way you measured the prison hahaha and it's nice, I think is really something about that, really big. I think there is a base under it too, in this picture we can see it, but not so well. Just curiosity, it is going to be placed in water?

yes, it sits on a rock island in the water.

I was going to make it a BAT to be placed in the water (tho I dont know yet how to do that), but now that it is so huge I'm not sure yet. We'll see.

A 10x10 lot is definitely not too large.  I recently exported a 7x19 tile model that is over 1000 meters high after 4/3 vertical scaling.  You just need to make sure your LODs area little more custom fit to avoid the max size barrier.
