Welcome again. There is only one town left to see and this time it shall be The Slackers' starter town. This entry will conclude the sightseeing tour around Udanani. From this point on, a real fun will begin, as the towns will start to expand and build out. The plan to turn Udanani into a megacity will finally be put in motion. Hope you enjoy today's trip! ______ "Relax, grab a beer and join The Slackers!" It is nice to go to the seaside once in a while, enjoy some early drinks with your friends or feel the sea breeze blowing through your hair while the sun sets somewhere beyond the endless horizon. Wait... only "once in a while"...?! Years ago, The Slackers figured out that the pleasures of life should not just be "occasional" and that they should last forever! Needless to say, their home town of Cape Careless is the embodiment of this philosophy. The Slackers are not very well educated as a tribe but they know exactly what they want from life and in the way of entertainment. They are absolute experts in this field. There are several places where The Slackers like to hang out. These include palm-shaded, white sand beaches... ...relaxing parks and open areas, suitable for frisbee challenges or picnics... ...junk food and ice-cream stands (located right next to Grand Chill Beach)... ...and a commercial zone, which mainly consists of gaming halls, pubs and video game arcades! If all that isn't proof enough for The Slackers' carefree nature, then the complete lack of schools in Cape Careless surely is! The Slackers do have a single library though - a form of entertainment for the few masochists who enjoy reading books! Oh, right - it has been under construction... for three years! The Slackers are quite lazy, but they do understand that beer, nachos and diabetes in a cup ice-cream deserts cost money and are not for free... This is why Cape Careless has built some industrial areas on the west coast of their home island. Unexpectedly, it is quite a robust and productive zone, but the jobs offered there are undemanding and require no education whatsoever. People employed at the industrial facilities work laughable 28 hours per week! Some of The Slackers are even employed aboard seagoing vessels, departing from the cargo seaport located on the western tip of Cape Careless. These intrepid sailors often bring back interesting stories about foreign countries back home. While marginally effective overall, these tales broaden the (fairly narrow) horizons of the general population in Cape Careless. All in all, The Slackers' starter town is dedicated entirely to pleasure and entertainment while education and ambitions are wantonly disregarded. The healthcare in Cape Careless is rather mediocre as well, just as most other public services are. "Live fast die young", hm? But whatever it lacks, Cape Careless offers at least two things - fun and friendly environment. ...and colorful drinks with umbrellas. What does the future hold? "Bittersweet" is probably the best word to describe the future of Cape Careless. The citizens of this town have absolutely no ambitions to strive for better education or accomplish any demanding urban projects. This is why Cape Careless will remain a hub for low-wealth residential and dirty industry, side-to-side with entertainment "industry". On the other hand, the carefree disposition of The Slackers draws newcomers' attention and continues to stimulate the residential sector. The North-Eastern tip of the island is now being prepared for new housing projects and perhaps another beach site. Residential demand in Cape Careless is very high, despite the lack of some amenities. The Slackers will also attempt to balance their budget a little better as it often wobbles between positive and negative monthly balance. Some of The Slackers have also complained that the industrial area to the west, does not allow them to look at beautiful tropical sunsets that their home island is famous for. The City Council has agreed to reevaluate the location of the industrial zone in Cape Careless, but given how lazy they are... It may take a while before any steps are taken! The sightseeing tour is over but the colonization of Udanani will now begin in earnest. What does the future hold? This time, it's actually hard to predict... The tribes of Udanani are independent and very particular about their goals and life principles. However, that doesn't mean that they are unwilling to ask for help... Sometimes, the Udananites will seek guidance from and call upon the judgment of the revered spirits of the St'ropoli dimension. That means you! The Udananites have a long-established tradition of communicating with the higher spirits through the use of the ancient form of divination known as "voting polls". Thus, they will be eternally grateful should you answer their calls when they need to make up their minds on one occasion or another. Keep your fingers crossed for your favorite tribe and the future of their homeland and be sure to drop by from time to time - everyone is welcome in Udanani. Until we meet again! Thank you all for your continued support, comments and likes!

The tour around Udanani continues with a visit to The Residents' and The Businesspeople's starter towns. Is there any common ground between these two tribes? Best to see for yourself. ______ "Home is where the heart is - join The Residents" Four walls and a roof is an important thing to have these days. But for The Residents, not just any walls or any roof will do. Bedroom is a town of good taste and comfort. Impressive, well-maintained and (if possible) expensive homes are a common sight here. Other homes in Bedroom, while not just as luxurious as the villas above, are very nice as well. Medium-wealth housing, pleasing to the eye, is abundant in this town. Some pockets of medium-density apartments are present in Bedroom as well, hidden further to the north. They don't really stand out and neither are they to last... The Residents prioritize single-family housing in their town but it is a challenge at times. The high-wealth and mid-wealth citizens who care about quality of their homes are picky and unlikely to settle in until several key requirements are met. Adequate employment is one of such requirements. This is why The Residents offer attractive jobs to potential upper-class citizens. Employment can be found either in this commercial park right here... ...or in agriculture at the nearby farms... Bedroom is one of the smallest and slowest developing towns in Udanani, but it also has a potential of becoming one of the prettiest and most orderly. Second only to The Altruists' starter town of Wellbeing. What does the future hold? The Residents wish to fill their entire city with villas and single-family housing so that Bedroom becomes an elitist living space. The Residents invest in some eye-pleasing surroundings to make their city more appealing to potential developers. Some small parks have already started to spring up here and there, increasing the overall land value - a thing The Residents are after as well. However, more ambitious "green" projects are already being reviewed by the City Council as well. The Residents will also attempt to redevelop and completely remove the low-wealth residential projects in the northern part of the town. Selfish as it sounds, cheap housing simply doesn't go well with their town's vision. What is more, Bedroom citizens have some kind of phobia against industry - any type of it, except for agriculture. The Residents are aware of the fact that commerce, services and agriculture simply don't generate as many jobs as a single industrial area could. However, they just can't stand a thought of allowing the industry into their luxury-home paradise! "Join The Businesspeople and reap the profits of your work" Located in the very heart of Udanani is The Businesspeople's town Profit Hill. It revolves around commerce and money. The town enjoys a good business climate and highly desirable land which is appropriate for entrepreneurs as well as small businesses. People who want to improve their lives or establish companies, flock to Profit Hill hoping to exploit the possibilities of the free market. Profit Hill boasts an interesting central commercial district, which has a rich mix of all types of business developments. Most of them are located along the town's main avenue named... hm... "Main Avenue". Smaller, service-based sector is located north of the main business district and closer to the residential areas. Speaking of which, the residential areas are just as important to The Businesspeople as the companies and corporations are. The Businesspeople understand that even the most visionary business cannot really take wings without employees - people who dedicate their time and health to do the work that CEOs would rather refrain from doing! This is why The Businesspeople do their best to provide adequate housing and living conditions to their workers and customers. One residential zone is located north and away from the downtown... ...while another is located right next to the town center and a green park. An area built in a truly Manhattan-esque fashion. It is a new neighborhood, so it isn't fully completed yet. Police protection is especially important in Profit Hill, because crime hurts both citizens and shops alike. Generally speaking, the residential population receives all services and amenities... that Profit Hill can afford. While The Businesspeople understand the need to keep their employees in good shape, they also understand how serious a continuous loss in the monthly budget can be. The Businesspeople try to balance the budget to keep their citizens happy and the city budget afloat. This is probably one of the major differences between them and The Altruists... A good example of such balance is the high school + hospital complex in Profit Hill. Again, The Businesspeople manage to adequately fund these services while still making sure that the city budget enjoys a positive cash flow. But there is also one problem area in Profit Hill that The Businesspeople aren't quite ready to resolve yet. The positive entrepreneurial atmosphere has given rise to several industrial areas apart from the commerce. Currently, there are two such zones in Profit Hill. The Businesspeople tolerate industry but are not especially fond of it either. The industrial areas in Profit Hill have been developed in the early years of the town's existence and out of pure necessity. Nowadays, they don't go quite well with The Businesspeople's vision of glass and concrete skyscraper town but they sure count as some form of business activity... What does the future hold? Not unlike The Activators, The Businesspeople wish to cover the entire area of their city with development. But not just any type of development. Profit Hill will be carefully planned from now on as to avoid eyesores and unconventional urban solutions. Commercial zones will be prioritized and supported by qualified police forces. Meanwhile, the shop patronage will be increased through constant improvements in the road infrastructure. Some communication routes will be favored over others to ensure that the shops and offices have maximum numbers of potential customers. Commercial interests will naturally be supported by new residential development. The density of these residential projects will also be gradually increased, pending the employment opportunities present in the town. The problematic question of industry will be addressed as well. It is yet to be decided whether it is still needed or not but if it is, it will probably be condensed to a single part of the town, or reduced to clean industries like hi-tech establishments or sustainable manufacturing houses. To be continued...

It is time to continue the trip across Udanani and take a peek into other starter towns. Take a moment to visit The Smileyfaces and The Localvores tribes on their home turfs. Enjoy. ______ "Don't worry - be happy and join The Smileyfaces! Or else..." Laughterdale - a lovely town, full of positive people and fun, fun, FUN! The Smileyfaces' starter town strives to become an entertaining and likeable place to live in. There are lots of things that still need to be completed in order to achieve it, but Laughterdale is getting there. Day by day. The Smileyfaces have several ways in which they nurture positivity and happiness. One of them is the way in which they organize their residential communities. The Smileyfaces' residential zones are concentrated and contain citizens of various wealth levels. While challenging for some communities, in Laughterdale this model successfully stimulates interpersonal contacts and neighborly relations. But there are also other things which put smiles on Laughterdaelians' faces. Agriculture and vast, relaxing, open spaces have found a way into The Smileyfaces' system of values as well. Sporting activities and games are also cherished by The Smileyfaces as they let them stay positively excited over the course of their lives. The Smileyfaces' philosophy is to simply search for positivity in every aspect of their existence. Which is a very "kawaii" thing to do! It is also worth mentioning that The Smileyfaces are one of the richest, most resourceful and most computer-savvy tribes in Udanani... All these privileges have made it possible for them to develop several mysterious and technologically advanced projects over the years. It is believed that most of these projects are housed in the top-secret "Emo-G" site, conveniently hidden in a dense jungle north of their home town. Away from any prying eyes. Many Udananites believe that The Smileyfaces have some sinister motives that are not yet fully understood. Many more, wonder what is exactly hidden in the mysterious siloes and boreholes laying in the "Emo-G" perimeter... The Udananites' imaginations have flared up especially after the revelations that The Smileyfaces have managed to weaponize hiccups... It is an open secret that The Smileyfaces have a lot more knowledge and possibilities than they officially claim to have. The full extent of these possibilities still remains to be seen... But even the most advanced technologies would become heaps of useless junk had no spare parts been available. This is why Laughterdale has a robust industrial sector, helping to support the research conducted at "Emo-G" site. The facilities also provide lots of jobs which, in turn, provide people with income. Needless to say, money, even if not the first thing to be happy about, is still a good reason to crack a smile! What does the future hold? The Smileyfaces plan to continue to grow their vibrant residential neighborhoods to further foster positive and inspiring personal interactions. Being the active bunch they are, The Smileyfaces plan to build a full-fledged, city-funded sports complex in lieu of just a single football pitch they currently have. The size and the cost of this project have not been specified yet but it is assumed that The Smileyfaces will be able to fund it with ease... One of the things that The Smileyfaces don't like about their city, is the dirty industrial sector located in the South. It is universally considered to be the most depressing part of Laughterdale and as such, is not looked upon favorably by the citizens. The Laughterdale's city council is preparing some plans to redevelop or destroy this area. It is said that three to four Elation-class supercavitating artillery rounds are being prepared specifically for the purpose of clearing the area. After all, futuristic weapons are all about clean, hi-tech, brushed-metal designs. Not some greasy, oil-leaking contraptions! " 'Local and organic' will be your credo should you join The Localvores" Is there anything better than waking up early in the morning, having a deep breath of fresh, fragrant air and cooking up breakfast made from milk, wholegrain cereals, crunchy bread and mouthwatering fruits? All of them produced locally? Probably not. The Localvores is a typical tribe of farmers who work the fields and nurture their crops and the environment overall. Their small town of Farmington is located at the confluence of three rivers running through Udanani - the main river named Bila An'anani and its two tributaries - Casamassima and Sopronia. The town life as such is concentrated almost exclusively in the Farmington village area. This is where about 97% of all residents live. The town is surrounded by various farms and fields which, similarly, employ about 97% of all residents. The Localvores are expert farmers and use the river and its deposits to the benefit of their farming activities. Occasionally, the rivers flood the nearby fields, increasing the overall fertility of the soils located there. The waters near Farmington are very clean, because the town is strategically located upstream from any other settlement in Udanani! But not all Farmingtonians work in the agricultural sector. Some of them are employed in the services and retail shops present in the very center of Farmington. Farmington is a very nice place to live in, but good luck trying to settle there... The citizens of Farmington are suspicious towards newcomers and don't like to share the fruits of their hard labor with anyone. Fearing that their efforts might be squandered or even sabotaged by outsiders. This aversion is, in fact, so deeply rooted that they don't even have any outside connections leading out of their city! The Localvores are very attached to their healthy and peaceful lifestyle. What does the future hold? The inhabitants of Farmington plan to expand their farming activities along the rivers, especially the main river of Bila An'anani. Should they succeed, Farmington may become a farming powerhouse of the entire region. If only they learned to share... One of the biggest projects that The Localvores are after, is the forestation of the northern edge of their town, in the area pictured below. The Localvores believe that a project like this will greatly increase the amount of valuable organic and mineral deposits carried downstream, directly to their fields. Besides, a large forested area on the other shore will also be a nice and relaxing place to visit on a Sunday morning. No decisions have yet been taken as far as Farmington itself is concerned. It is speculated that the town will not change much in the near future and will remain roughly the same low-key village it currently is. The Localvores wish to improve the health of their citizens, so investments in this sector and healthcare accessibility are likely. To be continued...

Welcome to the realm of Udanani
TheMurderousCricket posted a City Journal entry in SimCity: Tribalism
The ancient realm of Udanani is the home to seven tribes. Each of the tribes occupies different area of the region, has different mindsets and different sense of what is right and what is wrong. The Altruists want to make all people feel secure, healthy and fulfilled, regardless of how expensive it may be... The Activators don't like empty spaces. They love development. Any... type of development... Quality of their homes and, to a lesser extent , land value, is of concern to The Residents. The Smileyfaces want the entire world to smile with them, but back their words with futuristic weapons... The Businesspeople aim for a strong commercial sector and need reliable employees to run it. The Slackers don't care about what shall become of them. They spend most of their lives sunbathing or dozing off. Locally produced food and clean water is what The Localvores cherish most. They are very reluctant to share these goods though... Additionally, not far from the coast, lies the sacred Pond of Forces and the mysterious shrine of the ancient god - Sulka. Everyone is welcome to visit the temple and the pond. However, it is strictly forbidden to build or destroy anything in its immediate vicinity. By Sulka's command, Udanani is destined to become a megacity and a home to all of the tribes. It is up to them to unite and exchange ideas to make it happen. Is it possible for seven different mindsets to find a common language and cooperate in achieving this "magnum opus"? Or will it all crumble down in squabbles and arguments? Sulka and the revered spirits of the St'ropoli dimension smile upon Udanani, wondering how will this story unfold...- 4 Comments
