Functional large cities vs. smaller eye candy cities
Libertyville posted a topic in Cities: Skylines General Discussion
After playing several cities, I have come to the following realization. If you want to create complex transit systems and urban layouts and focus on primarily functions, you need to prioritize large and complex building, and use fewer assets and do less details. Too many assets and details will slow down the game to a ridiculous level. Also, details take a lot of effort and time. It is unrealistic to do that on a large scale. If you want to create eye candy, realistic cities with great details, you should build smaller cities with much less focus on functionality. With the current Parklife update, I haven't been able to play an existing city that I had been building for a couple of years. I realized that every update runs the risk of destroying an existing large city. You simply won't get to "finish" a large city due to the frequencies of updates. Building both functionality and aesthetics will not be feasible. -
Map Sizes - why I have never made the switch from SC3000 to SC4
SimCityHawk posted a topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Hello all. This subject is something I have thought about for a long time. I love all kind of city building games, but SC3000 has always been my favourite. Why is this? Well, other than some childish nostalgia I think map size has a lot to do with it. I have played a decent amount of SC4, but I have always been frustrated about the small map sizes. I know you can build large regions in SC4, but these regions consists of smaller independent maps that are rendered independently. This has always irritated me with SC4, since I never had the feeling that I was building something very large in one picture. I know the map size in SC3000 isn't very large either, but I do think it is easier to build a metropolis like city in one map in this game. Please correct me if I'm wrong. If there is something I have missed about SC4s map sizes, I would love to hear. SC4 is such a nice game, the graphics are awesome and way more realistic than SC3000. The community and downloads has always been bigger and better for SC4, so I would love to make a switch to the game, but I never think I will unless one can build large cities in ONE map. Do you guys know something that I don't?- 27 Replies

In two of my larger cities (+250,000 residents), some residential lots grow without properly finding road connections and promptly abandon. It takes up to a decade in game for them to become inhabited again. What is going on? This doesn't happen in smaller cities.

Hi there, Would anyone happen to know why all my elementary schools attendance in my larger cities drops? Every time I have a city that reaches 300k + citizens, all of a sudden all of elementary schools drop to around 200-300 students each and all of sudden when I query residential buildings across town, the education indicator goes to medium. All the funding is appropriate and not below the minimum school funding and there is adequate coverage as well as high schools, college, libraries, etc. Has anyone seen this before? It drives me nuts. I'm running on a Mac if that makes any difference to this issue. Many thanks to the community.
