This region just got to 400k, so I felt I might as well put it here. Most of that (200k) is in that central city, though. I'm going to expand onto the rest of the island/peninsula, then fill out the lowlands before moving upwards. Not sure how populous this region will end up, though.

the freytag building is the best building and it looks even better when its repeated 9 times in three adjacent blocks [but really, when you're berating this could you guys suggest another stage 5 CO$$$ on a 2x1 or whatever lot that'd compete with it?]

Alright. See the tall brown towers with the curved roofs (there are eight of them, I think) in here? I know they're really small in the image, but that's the only one of the city I have on hand right now. If it helps any, it's certainly not something that was created recently (as the city in question was made around 05/06) - but that also might mean that it's been removed from the STEX/LEX/wherever I got it from actually.

Eh, might as well show some stuff from when was playing last year, I guess: Notes on the pictures: 1: I think this may have been the largest and most exciting coaster I've made. I'm pretty sure it got to 9 Excitement... 2: Some suspended coaster I made in this post-apocalyptic themed park I made. High nausea rating. 3: Snow coaster I made in Arid Heights. It was *puts on shades* cool. 4: What I ended up with whilst playing that AA/CF scenario with the bridge (Barony Bridge? I can't recall). As you can see, it was pretty jam-packed. 5: A small mine coaster inspired in a way by that one in the Blackpool Pleasure Beach scenario. Of these, three of these originated from a blank template of my own design, stuffed with quite literally more money than would be needed in the course of completely terraforming the parks. I never did FINISH those parks, sadly...

I hate those messages they are SO ANNOYING! >quote> Just to let you know, they appear so often because it's usually the same few guests complaining. Just drop them off at the park exit and the complaining should be assuaged, if for the time being. Building your park more as a series of loops really helps get rid of this problem. I like RCT - I put it back on my computer a while ago and beat a few of the scenarios, but I felt like I spent most of my time building parks without much in the way of goals in both RCT1 and RCT2. I believe I eventually managed to get a coaster with 9 Excitement, which I guess was cool. RCT3 was fun, I guess, but it didn't seem to have the same feel to it. I don't know. RCT 1 was the best, mostly because of the massive amount of scenarios in it (even if I never actually got to most of them...). I'd like to play it at least once this summer - that and SimCity are on my to-do list.

I'd say use GIMP 2 as well; it's what I use whenever I make greyscale maps. The above applies, but rivers and collections of hills are best made with the Dodge/Burn tool (Dodge for higher elevation, Burn for lower). Mess around with the exposure, brush type, and other settings to see what fits best for what you're trying to do.

I feel that realism and beauty come with both the landscape and the methods of designing a city. There are very few places on Earth which are perfectly flat; certainly none that would entice people to build a city upon it, as cities are usually founded and grow due to factors such as trade and transportation. The biggest cities are usually on rivers or on bays protected to some degree, as this facilitates trade to a fantastic extent. If you still wish to stick with flat ground, it'd be a good idea to mix up your design of the city. Very few cities are all high-density; most have a token few commerical skyscrapers and a few apartment towers, but the majority of the population of even dense cities are located in medium-density apartments and buildings, or out in the suburbs. And although a grid may be efficient and actually be a fairly realistic method of city planning, it leads itself to repetitiveness and in general is frowned upon; along with the usage of varied terrain, mix it up a bit; make your roads non-straight and vary the grid sizes and shapes. Hope this helps you, and if it's just repeating what's been said above... it's another way of saying it.

If two or more cities have water between them, is it possible to connect them using a bridge?
Fee_Nicks replied to stevenoon's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
You could raise land where you want the connection to be, build the bridge to there, and cover it up with seawalls or something. Apart from that, no, you're limited to the city tile you're on when it comes to bridges and tunnels. -
New to Sim4 with "serious problem"
Fee_Nicks replied to jaskax's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Is there demand for any other types of bulidings? A city that large would seriously have a lot of pent-up demand that'd need to get satisfied by neighbors... Also, you do have the patch, right? Which one of the pathfinding mods did you choose? And for your quick question, no; the airport is a cap-buster, and caps don't go over from city to city. -
Earliest SimCity Series Memory...
Fee_Nicks replied to enemyone's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I remember getting SimCity 4 way back in 5th grade (from some Scholastic mail-order catalog), back in '04 - '05. All my cities I made before I got RH died on me due to huge deficits, but not before I took out multiple loans (and thus adding to the problem). I think the primary problem was because I made far too much in the way of services for a town so small. Also, I didn't know about water pipes, so you can guess what I did to give water to my whole city; I put loads of water towers over it. I doubt any of the cities got to 10000 before I got Rush Hour. The first real city I made in it got to 50k, but died as well. -
Newbie - Need Tips ffor raising Demand
Fee_Nicks replied to masi_23's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
1: Not that I know of. It may be other stuff conflicting with each other and causing the crash, though. 2: The brown boxes are due to you missing a dependency or a model. Look through your plugins folder and download the requisite dependencies (or look here: www.sc4devotion.com/index.php ) 3: You need a patch (either on the main site or here: www.sc4devotion.com/index.php ). Hope these help. -
Schools in my city are always overfilled!
Fee_Nicks replied to Slashy's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Wait - do you have Rush Hour? You get the big schools in that fairly early on (the Large Elementary and Large High School). If you don't have Rush Hour, you really should try and find it somewhere. If you do and are using the Large schools, just lower bus funding to a minimum, and make some libraries and museums as well to help keep the E.Q. up for the entire populace. -

Fee_Nicks replied to Slashy's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Are you still using the smaller schools? You'll probably want to move onto the big ones right now, or lower the bus funding so less people go to the same school. Also, try raising the average age of your citizens - that way your schools will be less crowded (just remember to build libraries and museums). -
What's the size of your plugins folder?
Fee_Nicks replied to flymantang's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Old: Apparently 'only' 833 Megs - I honestly thought it'd be more. New: 37.5 Megs - this tiny size I can understand. -
If you have buildings of any sort (well, except for ID) around your dump, I think you're not putting dumps far enough away from the city. Not like I ever really use dumps, but if I did I'd put them all the way on another city tile that I rarely play. If you can't find the Garbage Chute, look on Peg's site - it will most likely be there if it isn't here.
