  1. Out of topic, but doe's anyone suggesting there own city game know about the boomtown project? I'm sure that many people here could just scroll down the forums main page, and instead of clicking on the Simcity(2013) thread, click on the boomtown forum, and have a look there? Who knows? Maybe istead of clogging up threads like these, thinking about how to create your own project, just post any ideas in the boomtown forums, and help a promising looking sucsessor to sc4. Back on topic EA are about to destroy the city building genre. You just can't simplify building a city. You can't force people to build their city in a certain way, in this case forcing us to build on tiny patches of land in the middle of nothingness. You can't force people to build their city's on top of a predetermined transport network, making what the player wants impossible. If anything, we want MORE advanced options, and the many mods on the STEX add more options. No doubt, EA just want to make money. If next Febuary, critics tear apart the game EA won't care as long as their pockets are lined with money. Whether they achieve this by releasing DLC equivalent to a mod here for £2.99, or by attracting people who won't play the game for more than a week with stuff like the "Hero's and Villian's" set, and the ability to throw a meteor/ UFO/ monster at a (almost surely) included pre-built metropolis. If the game is like this, EA will destroy the Simcity franchise, and the maxis name. All we can do is watch what happens now.
  2. What would you pay?

Now, with recent announcements on the simcity website, such as a predetermined regional transport network, and the general look of it I would struggle to pay £5 for this game, never mind £65! I will stick with sc4, and try to help the much more promising boomtown project, which may become a true sequel to sc4.
  3. City Name Suggestions

Iv'e found the original (and easier to read) version of inca1987's info on Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_generic_forms_in_place_names_in_the_United_Kingdom_and_Ireland Its about 10 pages, if you want to print it.
  4. BAT Tutorial Cut Off

Well, this isn't the real end to part one, but I would consider the article to end something like: Now that you have the line in place, put an Edit Spline Modifier on the "Windows - Frame" and attach your line (just like we did when we attached the window and door openings to the walls). It will now become one object. Don't forget to add an Edit Mesh Modifier to your complete window frame, or else it won't show in the render. Make sure you do that now because you'll kick yourself if you don't. This building is only going to have 28 windows, but a medium-sized office building could have hundreds - meaning a lot of tedious work for you later if you don't take care of that now. Just warning you (trying to save everybody some of the heartache and pain I've gone through). Ok, ok, enough of the preaching. The next thing you'll need to do is snap another rectangle (again, hiding the window frame can be useful) in the same opening, uncheck the "Generate Mapping Coord." and "Display Mesh" boxes after the new rectangle is snapped, apply a UVW Map to it, and rename the object "Windows - Glass. Then, use a array to fill the rest of the windows. You may want to clone both objects, and rotate 90 degrees for the left and right wall, making sure they fit in to the window. Again, use the array function to fill all the windows. You may want to check that the windows look identical on each side before using array. For the left windows the x coordinate needs to be -8, right is 8. The back windows needs a y coordinate of -32. As I have already said, this is just a ending to the page I've just thought of on 5 minutes, but it should help you generally.
  5. What about politics?

Elections could be in a different mode. There could the sandbox mode, and election mode. Election mode would be having to keep the mayor rating over a certain number at a certain date. If not, random AI building spree. The spree would be a realistic city builders worst nightmare, so that's why there should be 2 separate modes.
  6. Freight Trains

Maybe you have built a transit enabled train station on the line. Some TE'd stations don't allow freight traffic through, so just lay a bypass around the station and see if that works.
  7. If this is final graphics, I would struggle to buy the game. I'm just hopping that 6 months can work wonders here, or else the game will just flop.
  8. Rendering a custom bat: 1 hour in 18 percent complete. It's going to be a long day.

    1. Xyloxadoria

      Xyloxadoria

Go outside and do something just let it render

    2. Ceafus 88

      Ceafus 88

Go eat a cake, have a soda, ride a bike, and come back in, and it should be done. :P

    3. colco2121

      colco2121

Do a couple of things, then come back. It will finish. How about you release it to the STEX?

      :P

  9. Frage/Question

I don't think so, apart form a maxis made region somewhere. And please just use English when posting here.
  10. College Humour - Video on Sim City

So thats why there are no elections in simcity!
  11. I have a few questions about LODs. 1Are custom LODs needed for a TE'd train station that is semi-transparent? 2Does a custom LOD have to be all one shape, or can it be a group?
  12. Suburbs and city-sprawl

I'm curious to see how the no density zoning thing turns out. Realistically, it shouldn't turn every town in the vicinity of a major city into Skyscraperville. Houston has no density zoning and yet consists mostly of small homes and apartments, strip malls, and open land, with urban clusters interspersed. Of course, modeling the density patterns of cities without a zoning model may be too complex for SimCity, since that also takes into account lifestyle choices and needs, gasoline prices, car culture, the perception of large cities and urban life in general, and cultural norms that dictate whether the average citizen aspires to live in a luxury condo downtown or in a 4-bedroom suburban McMansion. If there is no density zoning, the density and the buildings growing on them should be dictated by commute time(ie. higher commute time = low density). I'm sure that's within the limitations of the game. Supposedly its to make the game far more easier for casual gamers who don't know that there's a fansite dedicated to simcity. Well under this theory, a block of R$$ next to a block off comercial making up a small town could develop into 2 skyscrapers. I feel if there is no density zoning, the density should revolve around: 1 Land value It would just cost too much to build a small house in the middle of skyscraperville. Land that has a high value (City centre, by a main motorway, in a generally wealthy area, ect) should develop into skyscrapers. Lower value land in the suburbs will develop into 4 person houses, and maybe the odd apartment block. 2 Transport links Imagine if the game decided to put a skyscraper on a small country road. The road will soon become badly congested, making life a misery for the locals. A massive tower block would also clog up small residential streets. Skyscrapers should only grow near major transport links and arterial roads (near a avenue NWM style one way road, or near subway/ el rail / rail connections). This would be the only way to support such massive skyscrapers. 3 Available land You don't see a skyscraper just surrounded by nothingness. The game should have a certain threshold of development ( about 3/4 of all the land in a city tile) before it even considers building a skyscraper anywhere. This threshold shouldn't include farmland, so realistic farming communities can be built. These 2 factors would stop skyscrapers from growing in most stupid places, but other factors would need to be taken into account, like the scenery, historical areas, and more. Basicly, it would probably cause Maxis more trouble than its worth to implement a realistic, no density system.
  13. Suburbs and city-sprawl

No density zoning? If this is true, this could ruin small towns in highly populated regions, by creating a skyscraper on High Street, and a tower block on a cul de sac. It could, effectively, force people to play in gigacities if there is no make historical button/ zone tool. Realistic, sprawling suburbs should be an option for players, along with the concrete jungle, and sparsely populated, rural areas should be possible too, without subways.
  14. Newest site now up

It is very hard to tell the difference between sites. It looks like they use the same fourm software. A new site will need its own identity, because there can't be 2 simtropolises.
  15. Custom Content Appears Funky

Maybe it is just a rendering error. If you made it, just start again from the gmax model. Otherwise, just delete if it is a download.
