I am interested to find out why we still have pageants. Many of these poor girls come across as being naive and simply uneducated. I can see how the program helps out women in the sense that the contestants get scholarships, but first they have to be objectified, presented to an audience who will judge their definitions on "beauty", and then hope to get scored well by show-casing their bodies. Wow, to think that these girls represent today's females after being judged by a contest that is aligner to patriarchy. Now, regarding to what Miss California said - she does, without a question, have the right to express her regards on gay-marriage. Yet, lets not forget that her religious ideology has no right inside government! Some religions do not oppose gay-marriage, others do; some religions believe that eating shrimp is a sin, others do not. Remember that our founding fathers left their old-motherlands to escape religious dogmas that oppressed minorities and those that believed differently. When did Americans forget that legitimate value and re-established religious thinkings back into our legislation? People have a right to believe in something, but not to press it into others' life-styles. A woman, one that is supposed to represent females of all backgrounds and struggles established by a patriarchal power goes ahead and vocally denies the rights of a minority group by using old-laws established by those same ideas that oppress women all over the world, is not worthy of any recognition. I am sure that she means no harm, but at the same time she does not see the big picture of how a statement like that will be used for the agenda of those that mean harm and religious uprising.
