Boston Central Artery/Tunnel Project (Big Dig)
ardecila replied to blahdy's topic in NAM & Transit Networks
I'd be happy to help you with the LODs. The issue you're running into with the transition is an issue I ran into with the NDEX Freeway Transition. If you want the cars to interact with parts of the model that are below ground, you have to extend the LOD box below ground. In fact, it's better to have the top of your LOD at the top of the tunnel boat, and the bottom at the actual bottom. Apart from the double-wide sign and the first 2 light posts (the ones on the sides), everything will show up correctly. These three things can be rendered seperately, and it won't affect quality TOO much. Also, rather than subtracting one box for each direction, it'd be better to extend the box across both directions of traffic. Don't worry about the median, the end result will look better anyway. I can show you the LOD for the NDEX one, if it helps you visualize what you should do. -

It's not that quick, SimFox, because selection often takes a long time. I spend 2/3 of my modeling time, even in Max, selecting polygons, edges, and vertices that I want to edit. My basic building style is to make a spline of the floorplate, then extrude it to 4m or so, which is the first story. Then I copy it, stack it on top of the first one, and change the extrude height to 0.75m or so. This is the floor/ceiling above the first floor and below the second. Then I array these stories and floors up the building, using instances. This way, editing one floor changes them all. This works well for boxy buildings or buildings that don't change their shape as they go up. By the way, SimFox, what did you use for your glass material? It looks amazingly realistic, and I'm pretty sure it isn't just the reflections and GI. -

Waterfalls - are they possible ???
ardecila replied to delboysim's topic in SC4 Modding - Open Discussion
Well, this could be made a lot simpler. Someone find the hex location of the 3 bytes that determine the RGB value (could be more, the EffDir likes to duplicate stuff). The modder changes it in the Reader's hex editor. I use it all the time to make EffDirs for network pieces. Then it should be quite easy to change, provided the modder knows what color they want. -

Are those SC4 buildings? If so, what's the one at the very bottom, left of the Hotel Shangri-La? It looks just like the Merc here in Chicago. -

As always, I am standing and ready to modd. By the way, is there any way we can speak privately? I use Trillian, so I can run AIM, MSN, and Yahoo simultaneously (I have accounts on all three). This is looking amazing so far! I can't wait to use these to attempt at Hubbard's Cave! -
3D Studio Max BAT Version 2 Released !!
ardecila replied to GouRou's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
I used default scanline, and I'm currently running with 768mb of RAM. (1 256mb chip, 1 512mb chip) It's not very complex (a rollercoaster, mostly made of lofts). I'm not even using skylights or any advanced lighting. It does have over 2500 objects in the scene, though. I'll try that proxy thing, thanks. I thought one of the main reasons to use Max was that it could render large objects much more quickly and efficiently. Now I see this is not the case, exactly. -

3D Studio Max BAT Version 2 Released !!
ardecila replied to GouRou's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
Yeah - I installed properly, although Max 8 is installed in the C:/program files/autodesk/3dsmax8 folder. When I render, it goes to 16% while showing no rendering of any kind. Then after a while, it pops up with a Type 6, Code 410 error. I have no clue what this means, can someone enlighten me? I might try re-installing Max into a non-program-file directory, I dunno. -
I dunno about the whole two-marquee thing. I've never seen a theater with more than one, even if it's on a corner. But without a marquee, the side gets kinda boring.

Originally posted by: Andreas Roth Actually, BAT teams not only need good BATters, but also good lot makers and modders, testers and scrutineers - and finally someone who does the packaging (writing readme files, creating ZIPs or installers). It's the team effort that counts; some people are good at BATs, others at lot making and modding.quote> Well, the first couple posts in this thread are people who say that they would not BAT well. Therefore, in order to be part of a team, they would have to do one of the other jobs (modding/lotting/release). What they are missing is a BATter. But yes, scrutineers are essential. They are often overlooked, too, because people want to contribute to the released product. It takes up valuable time, too, if you have to do it yourself. It's much more efficient if someone can test it for you.

Heh heh..... BAT teams are only good with good BATters, sorry to say. Even NDEX woul not have existed without the incredible volume of BATs that DuskTrooper has put out. If you can't BAT, then you don't need to start a new team. If you still want to be helpful, join an existing BAT team. There are quite a few who would accept you, just look around. Look at T Wrecks; he's up to his neck in stuff to do, even though he doesn't BAT, because he knows how to make quality lots and he knows simple modding. The modding is the easiest part - it's straightforward and it's the same for most lots you'll encounter.

These are replacing older diamond-type interchanges, which were built assuming that the perpendicular road would be extended further beyond the highway on the other side.

Well, I'm mostly German and Polish, with a little Scottish in there too (1/8, I think). I've never encountered any stereotypes about people with German or Scottish heritage, but here in Chicago, Polish-American sterotypes are rampant. 1. I'm heavily Catholic. ---> I'm not a regular church attendee, but I used to attend a Lutheran church (German, haha!) 2. I'm stupid. --> Well, I do stupid things occasionally, but who doesn't? I generally do well in school, and I'm in the top 100 in a class of 850. 3. I have a large family. --> I don't have a large family, and neither did my dad (Polish side or my mom. Their parents, tho, had large families. My paternal grandpa was one out of 12! 4. I'm fat. --> Although a few people on the Polish side of my family have faced weight issues, nearly all of us live at healthy weights and get plenty of exercise. 5. I eat sausages and other meat products made from unsavory animal ingredients. --> I pretty much hate Polish food, and I also know how bad it is to eat. Not that I don't like some sausages - just not the Polish ones.

What Music are you listening to right now?
ardecila replied to GingerBlokey's topic in General Off-Topic
Hmm.. Roc La Familia by Jay-Z. I'm not a huge rap fan, but I'm spending most of my time ATM street-racing in Midnight Club 2, so you gotta play rap. -
Yeah.. subs are cool, but I definitely wouldn't want to serve on one - I'd take the corvette. Claustrophobia doesn't affect me typically, but the thought of 3 or 4 weeks underwater without getting out for fresh air.. uggggh. If that's not a problem for you, by all means, go for it!

Oh.. I see. all 8 of those wall tiles are based off of the one regular wall. Well, maybe I can use that to my advantage.

buddybud - how does this work? I.E. where do you plop the lot? Is it a TE that goes over the highway?

The Portland & Oregon BAT Team, Chapter 1
ardecila replied to sparkythepenguin's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
I dunno about making it a CO$$$. The fire escape on the front of the building clearly shows, if not a disregard, then a definite choice of "let's stick this on the front because it's cheaper". This in turn seems like something that would be done in a depressed or middle-class area. -
http://static.flickr.com/50/157474463_4ff92f1c86_o.jpg Here's my desktop. That's the Tenerife Opera House, btw. I run at 1152 x 864, which is an odd resolution, but anything larger is too small for me to see effectively. I usually either have architectural shots, Chicago skyline shots, or urban photos of Chicago taken from Flickr.
