Boston Central Artery/Tunnel Project (Big Dig)
ardecila replied to blahdy's topic in NAM & Transit Networks
Yes, the tunnels will maintain directionality, as long as you don't connect the northbound to the southbound. If you do, then they will both go to one side and mess the thing up. You have to be careful, too, because the subways like to connect adjacent tiles. -
Smoncrie - would it be possible to make a 2-tile-wide rail bridge, with no highway? I am considering modelling a real-world bridge with this configuration, but I don't know if it's possible. The only way I can think of would be to use an approach like the Tsing Ma bridge - designate it as a highway bridge but have only rail paths on it. Then, put rail puzzle pieces over the highway stub on each end.

El-Rail Base Texture--It is nasty
ardecila replied to ____----____'s topic in NAM & Transit Networks
Originally posted by: smoncrie Ardecila, Since wealth textures don’t work for elevated rail, changing the original model would change it everywhere; in rural areas, next to farms as well as down town. It might also be noticeable if the sidewalk changed in an intersection, e.g. from wealthy to medium under the tracks. If one uses type 21 exemplars one can have the appropriate texture in each of these cases.quote> Yes, but then the props will not conform to slopes perfectly. Unless you know something I don't? Apparently you know something, given the "PivotPointPosition" thing. Does this offset the prop from its footprint? Up until now, I've been using Resource Key Type 4 to do that. -

Real Highway (RHW) - Development and Support
ardecila replied to qurlix's topic in NAM & Transit Networks
The median lot is custom-made by the dude that posted the picture. In all fairness, it should have a jersey-barrier or a collision-barrier on the inside edges. That reminds me - qurlix, what are the possibilites for putting metal collision-barriers along the RHWs? They usually show up when there's a steep grade at the side of the highway, or when the highway curves, so sleeping drivers won't drive straight off the road. I got a great barrier model a long time ago from KCtheDestroyer, which can be bent, kept straight, or on a diagonal.- 3,919 Replies

Wow, SimFox - that made me laugh. "Nucilar" Bush? Anyone in America should get it - probably a lot of others, too. paulvmontfort - That looks really good, but the ventilation-grates should be darker. They look too light right now. -

Alright - those bushes aren't glow-in-the-dark, are they? This new rendering technique is amazing, but you have to adjust some stuff. -
There are lights on in my tunnel. They're kind of hard to see because of the daylight, but look at the side walls and you'll see a brighter area. That's not just the skylight - it's a free spotlight, coming out of the black box on the side wall, about halfway up (which is supposed to be a generic wall light). As for the white base - the idea is to make it have the same base as regular rail tracks do. I didn't have that texture available to use in Max, though, so I just made it white, lol. Tonks - that sounds amazing. As far as tunnel entrances go, the UK has the most beautiful in the world. Do you have any screenshots of what you did make? I assume not, with the HD crash, but maybe. I'd like to do some historical American-style tunnel entrances, too. The modern stuff is very utilitarian and kinda ugly, IMO.

Whipped this up in about an hour.

No, a prop family can't be created. The exemplar references the model file directly. I suppose an "empty model" could be set as the official one, and then the actual models are overhanging on lots. This way, you could have as many as you wanted.

Wow! Two things - the Post Office is backwards. The side facing the river has 4 towers, but the side facing away has two. Also - it needs Northwestern Station (or Ogilvie - I hate that name). Don't worry, I'll hook you up pretty soon.

bud - That field looks amazing, but I wouldn't want to trip over those giant letters!

Custom queries are somewhat easy, so long as you download the UIEdit program in the modds section. You can change images, and move stuff around. Not completely foolproof, though, and it crashes sometimes.

Boston Central Artery/Tunnel Project (Big Dig)

Wow.. this is getting absolutely amazing! I just got home from a 15-hour drive from VA, so I'm incredibly tired and it's 2:30am. Had to check up on it, though. I'll get you that LOD pic as soon as I can tomorrow morning. Oh - we should probably have another IM chat sometime, to work out some stuff on the real-world end. This thing has tremendous potential. -

Well, I just mean that most people would find more use for the sunken highway transition if it was only 2 tiles wide. Multi-highways (split a ground highway in half, for the extra lanes on the right) are difficult to use, especially in a trench. -

What happens to the extra lane on the right? I don't think integration with multi-highways is a good idea, unless you do one for regular 6-lane highways, too. -
RiverCocytus - Technically, it's a Maltese cross, but I won't hold it against you. We in the biz just call it a "stack".

This doesn't always happen, but it happens often enough. The good decision here is to not buy something like that, and all the information backs it up. But advertisement and other things distort reality, and people make bad decisions. I'd be willing to bet that it's a novelty there, and people mostly buy it on dares or curiosity. Of course, Sauget is downstate. Those people are weird. (No offense, dolfan)

T Wrecks - sorry, I forgot you were active on the modding circuit. I was going to use smoncrie's method of ad-hoc families, of course.

El-Rail Base Texture--It is nasty
ardecila replied to ____----____'s topic in NAM & Transit Networks
Er.. Why doesn't somebody just add a flat plane to the bottom of the S3Ds for the Elevated Rail? Basically, it would be Elevated Rail over Ped Mall, only without the Ped paths, and with a grittier, less pretty texture. Modify the original models, so they overwrite. Puzzle pieces wouldn't be comprehensive enough. -
hamsterTK - render the catenary wires seperately, and then they can be placed on the bridges as props, just like road bridges have streetlights.

Excellent! I remember Joseph playing at the Chicago for ages when I was 4. I always associate it with the Chicago, therefore. Are you going to make a building/prop family? I can help you there, if you want.
