  1. Sprawl, friend or foe ?

I personally like urban sprawl when it's done right. I live in the suburbs of Greensboro, NC and love it. It's always quiet, very little traffic except on the main roads, and there's virtually no crime out in the suburbs. Even though I have to drive everywhere to get anywhere I don't mind that at all; I work as a pizza delivery driver so I have to drive all the time anyways. I have found people in the suburbs seem friendlier than those in more urban parts of town (and they tip better anyways ), and delivering to the more urban parts of town is more dangerous due to the higher crime. Sure suburbs may feel sort of cookie-cutter at times but overall it seems to work out for me and the many others who live and work here. That's just my opinion though, and from having lived in a city in Germany I'll say I would not necessarily want to return to that.
  2. Show us your Night Shots!

@io_bg: wow that looks real good! I like the McDonalds and avenue intersection in the first pic; they add some nice highlights
  3. Show Us Your Suburbs

@Texan: that's the CPT painted desert terrain mod, found here: https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=16036. Sorry about the late reply
  4. The Best Towns/Cities In The USA

My absolute favorite two towns are Monterey and Carmel-By-The-Sea, California. Anyone who has been there would know why I choose these two places; they are just so relaxed and quiet - a nice change from the intense Bay Area a couple hours north.
  5. Show us your Railroads!

Just a train delivering industrial goods across the plains: And another shot:
  6. Lag in traffic simulator?

So I've encountered what is (to me) a unique problem, but which is very problematic for my region. I recently upgraded a RHW-2 route to RHW-4 to handle larger traffic demands - nothing fancy, just a bigger road. Letting the simulator run, I would expect the new road to be recognised after a couple of months, letting sims go to their jobs in the other cities. However it's been about 2 years and the simulator still hasn't calculated the new route, which has led to quite a bit of abandonment and "no road access" zots. I have a few speculations of what the problem could be. In addition to this city I have also updated the same main highway in the other 3 or 4 connecting cities. I did not do this all at the same time in order to give the simulator time to calculate the new routes, however I wonder if the new route can't be calculated properly over the 3 or 4 tiles it takes to get to the main job sector. It did work properly for the other cities (medium tile cities), but not for this city (the large tile city). I also wonder if it has anything to do with the RHW simulator itself. At first I used the new RHW neighbor connectors, which seemed to work fine. But when the latest city wouldn't calculate the new route, I decided to change all RHW connectors to ground highway connectors, which has worked well in the past. Here's the problematic route: as it looks right now, it looks like the route has been newly built and is just waiting for the simulator to calculate it. However this simply isn't happening in my city (again after 2 years of letting the game run). Sorry about all the text, But I would love someone to help me out with this... the problem is slowly destroying my city, and possibly me region as well.
  7. Lag in traffic simulator?

Hmm it seems to be working! and also after getting the latest NAM and changing the neighbor connections to the new connections. Thanks for your help!
  8. Lag in traffic simulator?

Hmm no I don't have that plugin. The RHW networks still operate in every other situation except for this particular one. thanks for the idea though.
  9. Lag in traffic simulator?

It's the NAM unified simulator I believe? I don't have the latest version of the NAM, but I have the next-latest version.
  10. Show us Your Interchanges!

These interchanges are really inspiring! They look awesome Well here's one of my own... I had meant for it to be a small interchange at first, but due to the difficulties with terrain and getting pieces to fit right, I ended up with this. It took forever to make, and probably won't get nearly the use that it's designed for, but I like how it turned out.
  11. 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP - South Africa OFFICIAL THREAD

USA just won against Algeria in additional time, and they're moving on! But I believe Germany will win, cause they're my fav team
  12. Show us your Universities, Colleges and Campuses

My university UC San Juan has been carved out of some neighborhoods, and is gonna grow with more sports facilities to be added. I still need to find some good BATs thats would work as student housing, however.
  13. Show us your NWM

I like the uses of the NWM y'all are doing! Here's mine. I'm actually a bit reluctant towards using these 3 lane roads as I have a hard time finding them being used a lot in RL situations, but I think they turned out OK here.
  14. Show Us Your Suburbs

I guess this is pretty much a suburb. It's a part of a few connected cities that lead towards an industrial area.
  15. What frustrates you about sim city 4

The game would crash if I rotated the view angle.quote> Well to make the game run on one core go to task manager, select "processes", and then when you find SC4.exe right click it, select "set affinity", and then uncheck all cores except for one. I got constant CTDs even though I have a single core processor, until I realized it was hyperthreaded (which means my computer thinks it has the equivalent of 2 cores). So every time I play SC4 I uncheck one of the "cores" and bam! no more CTDs
  16. Los Angeles California

This is still looking great; I love how you use the NWM. Your region looks huge; how many tiles are you working with?
  17. HBS HD Stop Sign

I believe that in accordance with actual street size the sign fits perfectly! I guess the only issue is the fact that the cars in-game are way too small IMO (also going with what T Wrecks stated). Good job though; great imporvement
  18. Traffic Light Replacement Mod v1

this looks awesome! reminds me of many of the california traffic lights
  19. car statue

I would have liked to see it with some color. Otherwise it's alright; its a good concept
  20. Smoncrie's Hole Digging help.

I believe to you need to draw the path through the hole digger tile, not starting on it. start 1 - 2 more tiles to the left of where you started, and then it should work. otherwise you might need to use a different path to draw through the hole digger (as in if you're trying to draw it with a highway in this picture, try using an avenue). hope that helps
  21. adding NAM components

Hi, so this is probably a stupid question, but I can't seem to find the exact answer to it (either in the forums or the NAM documentation folder): If I want to add a NAM component (let's say the file "NetworkAddonMod_TurningLanes_Extension_Plugin.dat"), can I install the NAM to an alternate location the copy/paste the file to the proper location, or do I actually have to reinstall the NAM and then reinstall other addons such as the RHW and NWM? any help much appreciated!
  22. adding NAM components

yeah that's right, even though I have the avenue turning lanes plugin. maybe its a conflict with something else?
  23. adding NAM components

thanks! it worked great, although for some reason I can't get avenue turning lanes to work (even though the file is present). Oh well, thanks again
  24. Show us your Farm Land!

So I've only recently decided to delve into the world of ruralism and farming... right now I'm working on a San Joaquin Valley-like region (California's central valley), which consists of gridded farms and a series of suburbs that stretches for hundreds of miles. This is my beginning, although after studying the valley more I'm thinking I should grid my farms even more
  25. Realism

make sure you pay attention to small details (which may seem unimportant), as they do add to realism. Also pay attention to terrain - if you're building something like Las Vegas then you obviously won't have rain forests or grassland
