SimCity Purists Are Understandably Upset About The Newest SimCity

The new SimCity game for iOS and Android may have a four-star user-review rating on the iTunes app store, but a glance at those reviews and some time playing the games make it clear that this city's got some problems.

I know, I know: "Oh, it's Kotaku harumphing about a new SimCity game again." But, well... have you seen what they did with SimCity for this new game SimCity Buildit?

We've got an attractive 3D game that lets you zone and build a city. That's good!

Not so good? SimCity fans, how much do you love timer-based resource-production as the primary means for growing your city?

Let's say that you zone some plots of land for houses. In most SimCity games, you tweak the tax code, improve the roads, maybe build a police station nearby and, bit by bit, those homes improve. In SimCity Buildit? You can do some of that, but the main way you improve the residential areas you've zoned is by dragging resources to them. Take this example, where the building will only advance if we put some steel into it:xpand

Here's another residential zone that you can develop. You'll need nails for this one:

Short on nails? You can make nails out of steel at a building supply shop (you may wait five minutes for them to be made, or you may pay virtual dollars to hurry that up).

You need steel to make nails. How do you get steel? You make it at a factory. You must wait one minute per steel girder (or you may pay to hurry that up). With a big enough factory you can at least fill three orders at a time:

Tap-tap-tap. Collect those resources. Is this SimCity? The wait-then-tap-then-spend-then-wait formula is more FarmVille or Clash of Clans.

This kind of game is turning people off games forever. It may take longer than 37 years for games to become a globally accepted art form if this happens...

So let me see here, what genres to screw up with this free to play concept crap:

The Sims > The sims facebook

Command & Conquer -> Tiberium Alliance

Dungeon Keeper -> Dungeon Keeper Mobile

    Simcity -> SimCity Buildit

    Black & White?

    Spore?

    Age of Empires?

    Populous?

    Red Alert?

    Dune universe?

iF EA had the titles they do the same to StarCraft and the Settlers in a heartbeat. (settlers actually having it true to its gameplay somewhat atleast)

Everytime they pull this $%&^! they get serious negative feedback, why are there so many people paying for this free to play crap? why are they maintaining EA's greedyness?

I'd probably get this game if you could pay something like $10 and buy the "full" game. However, even the largest bundle of "simcash", which costs much more than the full SimCity 2013 game did at launch, doesn't give you unlimited money.

Welcome to the world of mobile gaming.

People won't pay more than $5 for most apps on iOS and most android users wont pay for most apps.

Yet iOS users love shelling out money for IAP (instead of paying a higher price for a full game), while Android users try to pirate them.

Though this game does remind me of Simcity creator on DS.

The main mode requires resoure managmenet to grow your city.

The resources change depending on the peroid of history you are in.

Though you unlock everything through the main mode for use in the free play mode (normal Simcity style).

    Looks annoying.

I've tried playing these sorts of games & I can't stand them, reminds me of Sims....eat, sleep, burp, repeat....

So, it's a different game than what we've come to expect from SimCity. But I'm playing and enjoying it.  It's not going to occupy a lot of my time.

The thing about this game and others like it is resisting the urge to make a bunch of in app purchases.

The games are really cleverly designed. You wouldn't shell out $10 for this game on the front end.  But over time you might slowly shell out that much and more with in app purchases.

The way the game is designed is to make it easy to play and build a city and get it going...then hit you with things you need in app purchases to get around.  Oh, have a nice city? Guess what?  Now you need fire stations.  And schools.  And police.  More or less all at once.

Very clever from a business perspective.

    Same goes for RCT.

It doesn't surprise me, though, since many mobile games are just cash grabs...
