    Woo boy howdy-

Yesterday was a major RL bummer, as work followed me home and demanded my attention all evening.  I will be continuing the ongoing "We've got Mail..." hopefully tonight, but one never knows- I've got a short trial this afternoon and several briefs to complete.

In the meantime, I want to say I truly appreciate the great comments of the past few days and look forward to addressing each and every one of them.

I have a special note for the readers of 3RR from Japan.  It appears, from PMs and other feedback I've received, that 3RR is of interest in that country, but that language may be somewhat of a barrier to getting the information in some of the tutorials across.  I do not speak or write in the Japanese language (and very much envy those who do).  I have been experimenting, though, with the Google "Translate" service available on the web here:

Google "Translate" Service [ click here ]

and have downloaded a Japanese language character set from Microsoft from here:

Microsoft Japanese Language Pack [ click here ]

    to prepare the following message.

    ____________________________

    messagejapan01xg8.png

UPDATE: (8/23/06)  Well, as of about 8:40 a.m. AST I'm fixing this- the Japanese characters do not survive the journey out of the edit box- I'll have to do something different.

UPDATE 2: (8/23/06)  As of about ten minutes later than the first update, I've created the Japanese text as a pic- I'm going to contact a moderator in the next few days to see if a Japanese language pack can be installed at the ST end of things- I think that would work.

    To Japanese readers of 3RR:

    Greetings and welcome!

I will enjoy working to make this CJ more accessible to you.  I will try to translate the "Land Bridge" tutorial this weekend.  I would be very happy to see your comments here any time.

    Davidquote>

    ____________________________

I have no way to know, absent feedback, if the translation is accurate, and apologize in advance if I have said anything rude or inappropriate.  I'd really like to see 3RR reach the widest possible audience and be truly accessible, as opposed to just being a bunch of pretty pictures for the majority of the folks in the world who do not speak English.  Thoughts and comments on this, either here or by PM, would be truly appreciated.

I was going to leave everyone with a random eye candy 3RR pic, but my laptop has nothing on it you haven't seen before.  Here's a pic then from my trip this past summer (it's high fall in Alaska- 39 degrees (F) this morning and loads of "termination dust" (what locals call the first snowfall) on the mountain peaks that surround where I live) that I found amusing.  It was taken just outside the city limits of a tiny west Texas town named Alpine.

    randomtexaspiceb7.jpg

    I've said it before...wherever you go- that's where you're at. [ linkie ]

    Later.

    David

You keep amazing me. Now 3RR is turning international 6.gifIn Japanese, that could be a laugh doing that through out internet translators. If they are as good as the ones that translate Portuguese into English or vice versa, that will definately be a laugh 44.gif

Well, it does look Japanese to me... but what do I know?... at least no Japanese. 4.gif

Seriously, your Far Eastern audience doesn't surprise me, the pictures in your tutorials are quite self-explanatory. Integrating different cultures is really an amazing idea David.

indeed you have inspired (or perhaps goaded is more apt) me into making my first post on ST. i only drop by occasionally, though usually in obsessive multi-day fits. i marvel at the things available here and the talent behind them, grab what i feel i can use and never say a word, (once in awhile i do make donations tho). i don't really consider myself a lurker, but i have never felt that i could become a real 'community member' either. everyone seems to work so hard, and they all seem to know so much, i figure that no one needs to have the flow of thought interrupted by fawning praise from someone who is awed by everything...

but the real point, which i'm getting to, is that YOUR 3RRs is the first CJ that i read in its entirety, and the best thing about the experience was watching you change from a person who seemed unsure if they'd belong here to one who now celebrates his own creations' 1000th download. it's inspiring, maybe even inspiring enough to start my own CJ

    and now the fawning praise:

3RRs is gorgeous; your sensitivity for landscaping is fantastic! and nevermind the eye candy, your real genius is the BRAIN candy of the tutorials. the details are a huge help to people who can't tell just from looking at screen shots what can be constructed in game, and what is instead a BAT. eg the land bridges (i never knew they 'real', or functional). and what details! links that work, complete step by step instructions, definitely full disclosure. i can't believe you find time to practice law.

    thanks for having me over

[ linkie ]  I'd be happy to talk with you more about life as a lawyer anytime...let me know.

Could this success, perhaps, mean we can expect more in that area?quote>

I plan to be uploading to the STEX (oooh, that sounds vaguely obscene) again fairly soon.  What, I don't know- but soon in any event.

Okay so this is my first visit to this CJ.   I usually go to the last page and check out the most recent posts. (Which I did here.)   I am really impressed.  I love the little tutorial on unusual highway junctions; great stuff.     I liked it somuch I am going back to the beginning to look at the whole thing.  I have only done this in one other CJ.   That was TPP's "Haalu".   From what I have seen on this page alone I think I am gonna love this CJ.  Thanks for sharing.

We left off with Jacky's (jacqulina - Paradise Falls )comment left in the wee hours on the 8th on page 21 [ linkie ]...

John (Darmok - Anduin Valley Revisited)

I never heard of that Ctrl-Shift-C combo before!!!!quote>

It's a tribute to the depth and breadth of SC4 that folks like John (and myself- I've probably fired up a session of the game on average at least once a week since 2003) can still be discovering features years later.

Pressing the [ Ctrl ][ Shift ] and [ C ] keys all at the same time, btw, gets you this

    SC4 contour lines!

Glad you're back from from vacation, John!  Thanks for stopping by.

Torben (GMT - Greater Columbia River

    waiting for more

Torben, you were also waiting for more back on June 19th.  Since then, we've done 3RR from the road, put rapids and waterfalls on the STEX, and started mapping.  I hope that's the sort of more you had in mind.  If it is, there's plenty more.  Heck, the slogan of  this CJ could be

    3RR - Where There's Always Something More

More later, my friend, more later...

    -----------------------------------

    Isaac (van1357)

    Referring to the "contour" feature-

I have been playing this game for 2 and a bit years now and have never seen it used or how to do it.quote>

Well, now that's three of us.  Wonder what we'll find next?  Thanks for your visits, Isaac, and for your ongoing contributions to the STEX [ linkie ].

    -----------------------------------

Jacky (jacqulina - Paradise Falls )

Hey, girl!  Back again, and at a reasonable hour.  Although- 3RR is a 24-7 establishment.

Jacky...you just come on over any time you want.

    -----------------------------------

Phil (PhilsCafe - Acorn Creek Region - An American Story and contributor to Inter-Nations: Pakkusena)

Phil, your detailed and insightful comments are always great to see here at 3RR.  I'd love to see the waterfalls and rapids we've done here put to use in Acorn Creek- thanks for thinking about including them.

About the Ctrl-Shift-C combo (as John pointed out): I accidently hit it a couple of times before, but never realized what it was exactly.quote>

Well, now that's four of us.  International bridge match, anyone?

    -----------------------------------

    Steve (sorchin - Developing Macedon)

Steve, thanks for the info on the helmet you use in your avatar- I would have expected, knowing now how you approach things, that your STEX statuary, such as your Smaller Knight Statue [ linkie ], would be carefully researched.  You should plan, btw, to see some of those statues in 3RR cities once I get around to that level of detail.  They are great work!

I just love your waterfalls. Howd you do it?quote>

I actually have a tutorial on that "in the can," as they say in the film industry.  I'm just waiting for an appropriate time to use it.

Thanks again for being a 3RR regular.

    -----------------------------------

Whoa...bottom of page 21.  Off to work.  More...

    ...heh...

    ...later.

David, the day we stop learning new things will be the day we die, and even then, perhaps it'll be a new learning experience somewhat! (sorry about getting metaphysical on you!) 2.gif

I really like those contour lines, they allow us a better view of our cities and help us create more realistic setups!

On another topic, have you seen how well Szarkoz have used your tutorials on plopable (or is it ploppable) water. Simply stunning! If you have not seen it yet, go and have a look!

    Enjoy your weekend!

    Hello David,

Hm, I looked at the map you're making now. Did you noticed that it became a standard for every CJ to have its own map? I suppose I'll be making mine simultaneously with the region itself in SC4. I don't want even think about how much work would I have to do if I finished the region!

I like the custom interchanges you make. Another useful information in Three Rivers Region 2.gif I'm sure I'll try them sometime.

    Keep it up!

Okay I finally made it all the way through!    It took me three nights till past midnight each night but I did it!      Man am I glad I did too.   All I can say is "HOLY MOTHER OF insert chosen deity here (if agnostic or atheistic please use any appropriate noun)!!!!!!!!!"   This is the greatest CJ ever created.    (okay, so I haven't looked at EVERY CJ but it is still really kool)   I too have been playing SC for what seems like forever and had no clue as to the vastness of possiblities that were available.    And I didn't even really know what the insert place of ultimate punishment here  I was doing as far as terraforming went.   Thanks for creating this masterpiece.    Now if I can just figure out how to organize my plugin files like you do, with all the stuff I have downloaded from your links.   Man do I have alot of work for my handful of grey matter to sort through.     Looking foreward to the next time you can update.   I am a bit bored here in Dubuque, IA at the moment.    (okay let's see... after midnight.. gotta get up at 6am for the Farmer's Market in the morning...   Maybe I ought to GO TO BED !!!!!   Hmmmmm...)   Oooops, sorry didn't mean to let you here the voices too.     (They can't hear me)   Yes, they can.   (They can, OHHH.   You are getting very sleepy,  Very sleepy)   Hey stop that!  They aren't gonna fall for that hypnotism stuff.   ZZZZZZZZZZZZ  (When you wake up you will think you can terraform)   *SNAP*    Wow, sorry must have dozed off there.     Wow, I feal like I need to plop a bunch of road zots and then bulldoze them.  Hmmm.   Better go.  Later.

Hello David. I've checked out the contur lines (which means I used them intentionally), they're great, they give a feeling for elevation. And that's one thing I missed most in SC4... maybe I should read the manual better...

I'm pretty sure that you'll get to see the waterfalls or the rapids or both in Acorn Creek. I'm currently planning to make some ploppable water bodies in the State Park... for a start.

Btw, I don't know how to play bridge 4.gif. Take care.

Okay David,    Maybe I missed it but did you post a link to Cycledogg's "Columbus"?    I can find Jeronij's version of Cycledogg's "columbus" but not the original.      Also before I load it ("it" being Jeronij's version), will it conflict with PEG's MTP,  any idea?   Oh yeah, I'm still looking for the slope mod as well.    Anyway,  I started using your rapids and waterfalls, and the terraforming technics you showed.   WOOHOO, I am actually getting something worth looking at.   I'll have to take a few screen shots and upload um for people to see your tutorials at work.  4.gif  Well, gotta get up real ealry this week so off to bed.
