Here's the next "working" map.  I'm beginning to arrive at basic styles I like.

    The township...

    htownshipep1.jpg

    The map...

    hmap800xtopbv2.jpg

    hmap800xbottomaj7.jpg

Clicking on the map anywhere will bring up a larger one in a new window.

I have yet to add legends, boundaries, things like parks and that sort of stuff.  I'm workin' on it.

    Later.

    Hi David.

I like your maps very much. I gotta check out that terraformer tool some time, seems to be very helpful for my next map maybe (I followed its development but never managed to download and install it...).

I still enjoy following your 'tutorials', there's always something new to learn. Thanks.

    Take care,

    Phil

Thought, while I continued to work on maps, I'd do a "We've got Mail..." to begin responding to the great comments you have left, starting with the newest first.  This might take two or three posts, based on previous experience.  We'll see.

    ------------------------------------

First, though, I wanted to note my appreciation to all who have downloaded the ploppable water rapids and waterfall lots I've posted to the STEX.

The rapids hit 1,000 DLs a bit ago...

    hit1000wc9.jpg

and the waterfalls are, as of today, really close or maybe even now over that mark.

If you have missed them, they are here (the rapids)

    https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=16289

    and here (the waterfalls)

    https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=16394

Links to tutorials are in the read me's, or check out the table of contents in my sig.

    So, to the mail...

    ------------------------------------

    Jacky (jacqulina -
Paradise Falls)  Thanks for enjoying the maps.  I know this might not be an aspect of CJing that is of interest to everyone, but I'll try to keep things moving along.  Paradise Falls, by the way, continues to be a wonderful place to escape the summer heat.

    ------------------------------------

Phil (PhilsCafe - Acorn Creek Region) Greetings, my friend in Switzerland!  Thanks for your regular visits to 3RR; you can be assured that courtesy is returned manyfold in vistits to Acorn Creek (the pleasure is mine).  I'll address your remark about my "use" of the terraformer tool a few responses down.  As for tutorials, I'll continue to style my CJ along those lines as long as folks indicate they find that approach useful.  It is quite gratifying to look at a thread, find someone commenting about where to find a solution to a problem, click on the link and then wind up on your own CJ.  That works for me.

    -----------------------------------

threestooges  Hello, fellow Californian.  I was born at The Business Park Formerly Known as Fort Ord, just north of Monterey.  My dad was there for a tour during the Korean War.

    ...dates me, huh...

With parks and city streets shown on there as well, this is going to be (if it's not already) a great thing to see. quote>

Parks, city streets and more are on the way.  Right now I'm just doing the basic set of about 30 maps to cover the entire region.  Then comes the detail.  Thanks for your visits- always look forward to seeing you around.

    -----------------------------------
    Sorchin (
Developing Macedon)  Thanks...and a well done to you, too, both for your CJ and for the great stuff you're uploading to the STEX lately.

Your avatar's great, too.  Have you told us anywhere details about what it is (I'm assuming it's a Crusades era helmet, but would love to know more)?

    -----------------------------------

Mike (Mikeaut - Cristallo)  Hey, thanks for the great comment.  There are many approaches, as we have seen lately, to SC4 mapping.  I'm really glad you like mine, and I'll enjoy seeing what you have to say about future development.  Great start on Cristallo, by the way.  There a lot of great summer reading in the CJ Forum, that's for sure.

    -----------------------------------

That's it for a bit.  Gotta take a break (and go to work).

    Later.

You never really realize how big this state is until you travel across it. i was just up by Fort Ord and the bay area in general looking at law schools. Not a bad area... very commercial as you say.. Lucky your father was there during the war instead of overseas. Congratulations too with the success of your waterfalls and rapids (both of which are very useful for me). Could this success, perhaps, mean we can expect more in that area? Whatever the answer, I can't wait to see what's coming.

I'll pick up where we left off...

    ------------------------------------

    Owen (owenluby -
    Barton Region)-

I really like the geographic features you use!quote>

See the response to Silvio's (Rayden) comment in a minute.  I love terrain in maps, too, even though it is sort of inconsistent with my "road map" approach.  We'll see where we wind up.

Barton Region, btw, gets better and better with each update.  It's on my summer "must read" list.

    Take care down under!

    ------------------------------------

    Jacky (jacqulina - Paradise Falls)-

    awesome workquote>

Jacky, you're what's awesome.  Your comments probably light up the day for most CJers around here.  And, they always seem to come from the heart.

    ------------------------------------

Silvio (Rayden - Els Pirineus) Silvio, hey!

You are referring here, of course, to the question asked by Craig (cityhawk) about the program(s) I am using in connection with my 3RR mapping efforts.  Well, my friend, batter up...

    ...SC4 Terraformer Tool...

Noop.  I am simply cutting the "All Off" dataview straight out of an SC4 screenshot...

    alloffviewwj7.jpg

...along with the "Traffic Congestion View" view.

    trafficcongestionviewuh7.jpg

I'm gonna learn how to use the Terraformer Tool- I've futzed with it, and it looks fantastic.  But right now that's in the one-too-many-things-to-do-pile.

    So...STEEE-RIKE ONE!

    ...Photoshop...

As much as I talk about my "photoshopping skills,"

    ...yeah, like you have any...

I actually should be talking about my "paintshoppro-ing skills."  I've used PSP8 for about three years now, and I've gotten pretty good, if I do say so myself,

    ...you just did...

at the limited number of things I can do.

Here's a PSP8 screenie of the cropped "Traffic Congestion Data."

    pspgamemapshotqb6.jpg

Now, I need to note that I'm not doing a mapping tutorial,

    ...yet...

    I'm just responding to Silvio.

But I will show you this...

    pspmapshotum4.jpg

...which shows my latest map being created in PSP8.

    Here's a close-up of the "Layers" toolbar.

    insertoflayerpaneloy8.jpg

That ought to give some of you a hint.

    Sorry, Silvio.  Photoshop?

    STEE-RIKE TWO!!

    Finally...

    ...Region Census...

I love Region Census.  It's a cool little tool that no SC4 fan ought to be without.

That said, do I use it to create my maps?

    STEE-RIKE THREE!!!

Heh, Silvio...you are one of my oldest and most favorite amigos here on the CJ forum.

Els Pirineus is brilliant, my friend.  You've sent me PMs with tips and tricks that have been invaluable to me.  But...that's baseball.

    YOU'RE OUT!

Uh-oh.  Holy cow!  The catcher heard this...

    ...David's Grey Cells...

    ...and dropped the ball!

Silvio takes off for first...the throw...

    ...too late...SAFE AT FIRST!!!

Flattery, my friend, will get you everywhere.

More about that tutorial in the next update

btw, Silvio, I'm still at that ploppable snow.  You will be the first to know.

    -----------------------------------

bat  It's so great to have you fly by.  You have very, very discriminating taste in CJs.  Its great to be in such company.

    -----------------------------------

collgab (The Day After Tomorrow)  I'll make my first visit to your CJ tonight.  I've heard the buzz- I'm checkin' it out.

The day after tomorrow up here in Alaska is...uhhh...Thursday!  I'll be interested in your take.

    Heh!

Your comment is really gracious- don't be a stranger to 3RR.

    ------------------------------------

    Craig (cityhawk - Montrose)-

What program do you use to do this (sorry if you've already said it; it's late at night and I don't really feel like lookin')?quote>

I probably addressed your question responding to poor Silvio, above (who's now advanced to third and should score in a minute) .  The tutorial will make everything perfectly clear, I promise.

Thanks (based on your last post) for becoming a 3RR regular late in the game...

...awright, enough already with the b-ball metaphor...

    (...Silvio SCORES!!!)

...we'll see you back soon, I hope.  And...

Montrose!   How'd you know that was one of my favorite 70s bands?

    -----------------------------------

Down to dinner.  Mesquite marinated chicken from the barby.  Wild Rice.  Ranch Beans.  Alaska is just heaven in the summertime.

    Later.

...awright, enough already with the b-ball metaphor...

    (...Silvio SCORES!!!)

...we'll see you back soon, I hope.  And...

Montrose!   How'd you know that was one of my favorite 70s bands?

    -----------------------------------

Down to dinner.  Mesquite marinated chicken from the barby.  Wild Rice.  Ranch Beans.  Alaska is just heaven in the summertime.

    Later.
