wow, this cj is absolutely fantastic! the amount of details you put in it and the fact that you publish almost every step are really amazing! if i rated this cj, i'd give it 11/10 4.gif

oh and really nice work with the full region picture (the 10MB thingy), it's really impressive and great for lazy (and busy) ppl like me, who don't have time (sry :s) to go thru all 91 pages 4.gif

btw - do you intend to make Barad-dur, Nurn, Rhun & co. as well?, and how will they look like?

Welcome to page 92

Slowly I'm finding all the gems on this CJs thread. Here is another one for my collection of favourites. Now I must find the time to go through it with a bit more care. But, so far, it's one of the best I've seen lately. Keep up this good work and thx for all the tutorials. 4.gif

Wow this is just amazing. I just wanted to stop by and say that I had the privilege and the honor of rating this city journal on the latest podcast episode (which could be found in the Simtropolis Related Forums). Your 9.6/10 rating by the podcast team sure is a fair average for this journal, you have done so well with it and you continue to do well. Can't wait till this monster of a journal hits 100 pages!!

Hey John

this is awesome, all the terraforming you've done on here, very nice and as I can see I'm not the only one who is totally carzy about simetry and height leveling 9.gif

ah and also the pre-planning before start anything, I like the choices you made on the bridges and the restrict number of them to create a more real sense.

Great work man.

    S_A_ (Shadow_Assassin) - The Savannah Way

Hi SA, Good question! I think I'll take an SC4 vacation for a while, and then perhaps try my hand at BATTING, not sure though, already tried but... perhaps it's simply something I'm not really good at.

I like doing LOTS though, still a lot to learn in that. But we'll see when the time comes.

Until then I'll try to keep the weird ideas flowing! hehehe...

Thanks for your great support mate, it's really appreciated you know (Even when you blow my scoops  18.gif ) !

    Take care

VesterDK - VDK Production (Trams and Waterbus project)

Hi Vester, Photoshop is indeed a great tool!, so full of possibilities!

And trial and error is the process by which we learn, so why not showing it! But only from time to time though!  18.gif

    Thanks man!

    Anubis - anubis' cities

Hey Anubis, you'll see developments, If I'm right, around the fourth update. It's just that this time I really wanted to try to do a complete transit network, before zoning.

After this experiment I've reverted to only doing a general layout, more flexible and less time consuming. But on the other hand it present a new kind of challenge and it was as fun to work this way than what I usually do. As for the number of replies, I've learned that all we have to do when doing a CJ, is to be patient. Do your thing, and people will come, and even if it's great to have that many comments, you'll always be pleased with people that follow you along for the ride and who are offering suggestions and often humor! For myself all that interaction is now part of my daily routine and I really like that!

Again like when working in SC4, the key word is patience.

    Thanks for the visit!

    Bat

    Glad you appreciate Bat, Thanks!

    Darmok

Hi Darmok...... Hey!!!!...... wait a minute....! why am I answering myself??? tst tst tst!

***talks to self - must not talk to myself like that! not good, not good****

where was I? oh yeah, On with the next post!  2.gif

PS That'll show me not to bump my own thread!

Szarkoz - The Free Democratic Nation of Caledonia

Again this is but an extrapolation of other CJ'ers techniques that I've learned in that last year. A bit of experimentation and a bit of patience and there it is!

HA! The matching borders question! Well that is a tad different... quite easy if you're working with the regular Photoshop, all you have to do is to go to the SELECT menu, then chose COLOR RANGE, and in the resulting dialog box you use the eye dropper tool to select the color of your city background, then click OK (it helps a LOT if you changed the regular ingame blue PNG's for a uniform color, I personally use white, some use other colors) this give you a working selection, with that selection active you can then delete the background color and match the picture with the others with no problems. The best background color to use would be a color that is not used at all in the game, so this way Photoshop ONLY select the background. For me, pure white works quite well, it's a color that very few BATS use.

If you're using another imaging program, then you can use the magic wand tool and point on the background, again the use of a uniform color is preferable, when it's selected delete it, and afterwards the hard work begins, you have to go and ZOOM in on any part between the trees that shows that background color and manually erase the background color with the eraser tool. (Prepare yourself to be VERY patient with that particular technique)

Glad you appreciated the tech shots, I know it can be a bit "arid" to look at them, but they are the base on which the eye candy can be placed later on!

Thanks for your good words and see you later!

    Take care

    Choco (Chocolatemax285) - Green Depra

Hi Max,  43.gif, Can't say anything but thanks, for that great compliment mate!

As I said it's worth the effort when it's appreciated.

Always good to read you, and can't wait for the next Green Depra update!

    Take care!

Mightygoose - Vil-valad, a city and its roots

Hey John, well that's what I do usually, but more like a "rough" sketch, and I usually end up modifying it at some point or other, but it keeps the general look it has at the beginning. This time I really tried to put it (complete terraforming and all) and don't modify it at all, and develop around it. As I said to Anubis, I think it takes too much time, so I'm reverting to the "rough sketch" technique, it's more flexible, moreso when you decide to move part of the transit network, then you don't have to "undo" the terraforming. You only have to do it once.

Ha! I was wondering where Scott Bowmore would end up.... can't wait to see that!

    Take care.

EDITED - Since then I saw where Mr Bowmore lives and I must say that you have talent for creating interesting stories!

    Sloppet

Hey Sloppet, I sure hope this ain't true and that you're not leaving Simtrop! 22.gif

Battlecat - Terra - An evolving region

Hey Battlecat, well, I'll keep posting tech shot as long as people we'll enjoy them. And the bridges building techniques are Jeroni's I just adapted them to my style, but as far as I'm concerned credit goes to him.

Thanks man, and here's more tech shots!

    Take care!

    Bow River Valley

Hey Phil, long time no see!

Really glad to know that those shots are appreciated, I always found that we appreciate more a city when we can see all the underlying work. About pic no 10, I just learned the "hard" way, I made one and then when I tried to add some streets, I was caught! there was just no place left! I had a lot of development done all around and didn't want to blast... and ending blasting it anyways! So that is one thing now that I try to plan!

The land bridge technique I learned from Jeroni, he's a living SC4 encyclopedia!

Always good to hear from you Phil, and I sure hope to see a new update in Bow River Valley!

    Nik-nik

Hi Nik, not too wet from your last bathing adventure with the kids?  2.gif

For your question about posting this to the tutorials sections, I have nothing against it my friend, if you think they could help, the thing is I went to that section and found that the tutorials there are quite complete and very well done! mine looks a bit simple in comparison! They're more like "mini-tutorials"... But I'll see what I can do on this.

(If only I could have 36 hours in one day!  46.gif )

Yep that small lot is probably one of the first "extender" to have been posted. I should use it more often.

And I'm trying to find some time to play, BTW I played 2 hours monday night! I was so rusted, that I had problems finding things in the menus  18.gif...

    See you later!

    Take care

The Phoenix Coast by RiverCocytus & Cifa

    Welcome to Anduin Valley RiverCocytus,

    Yes I use a bridge height mod, I think it's Joerg's.

Thanks for your visit RC, do come back anytime you want!

    Take care

    GMT - Greater Columbia River

Hi Torben, Thanks! And here's the next update!

    Take care

    Threestooges

Well it seems that I won't have a choice about posting those shots to the tutorial thread! OK I'll try to do it as soon as I can find some time!  2.gif

As for photoshop tutorials, there are so much of those on the NET, all we have to do is Google - Photoshop +tutorial - and you'll find a ton of them, PlanetPhotoshop for instance is a good place to begin!

Always a pleasure to read you threestooges, see you later.

    Take care

    Tracker - Graph X Services

Hi tracker, well to tell you the truth, I'm really surprised those days at how much post per update AVR is getting!!!

And I have the utmost respect for all the work that Mrbisonm have done in Nexis of Genesis, and that, cannot be surpassed, the story itself must take him so much time and effort I can't even imagine! Kudos to him for his great talent and great work.

Glad to see that you appreciate the tech shots, I remember reading and watching all Jeroni's tech shots in SCR, they sure were a great help to me.

As for the banner, I thank you very much for the offer, nonetheless I'd rather keep the one I have right now, it kind of evolved slowly with how I perceived Anduin Valley while I was building it, perhaps I'll change it later on, but I don't know when or if I'll do it. I really appreciate your generous offer though, that is very kind of you!

    Take care

    Fairlane500

Hi Fairlane500, Welcome to Anduin Valley,

Thanks for those compliments! I do try to chose an interesting angle for the pics, sometimes it works, sometimes.... mehhhh, just can't find a good one.

And the thing is, very often we click without even thinking about it, not even trying to get a good shot, and those are often the best pics we take! So much for planification and talent hey!  18.gif

Come back anytime you feel like it, the more the merrier!

    Take care

    HamsterTK

Hi HamsterTK, Welcome to Anduin Valley,

Hey believe me, the first time you'll make one, you'll probably swear you'll never make a second one! BUT, you will, and the second one will go smoother than the first one, and the third one even better, I guess that everyone find his or her way of doing it, it all boils down to patience and attention. And believe me, it is REALLY easier to do than to explain.

    See you!

    SpecialEddie

    Hi Eddie!

Thanks, and as far as the development is concerned, it should begin around update no. 5 It'll begin with the placement of train stations on the north and south shore. And then the "real" development will begin.

    Take care

    GaBoR

As I've said earlier, those tips and tricks are mostly adaptations of things I've learned in other CJ's. Simtrop is probably one of the best SC4 think tank on the net!

Looking forward to reading you again GaBor.

    Take care.

    Capitol1 - Reveska Valley

Hey Capitol, if you're using paint to produce mosaic, you have my respect! It's not the most flexible tool there is.

Have you ever tried "The Gimp"? it's not as complete as Photoshop, but you can't beat the price.... it's free!

you can have a look and see if it could be good for you, here's the link : The Gimp - for windows And you can find tutorials here : Gimp - Tutorials

Even if the learning curve is a bit harder than Paint, it offers you a LOT of possibilities for free!

OK OK down from the soapbox! LOL

    Take care!

    MS (magpieshooter) - Kinata Region

    Hi MS,

Thanks mate, and I must add that in many ways I'm a $%&^! too, for instance you should see the problems in run into when I try my hand at the BAT tool, I'm not so bad with the LE, but the BAT!!! sheesh! I'll have to work hard on this one!

    Take care!

    Micah

Hey Micah, you're welcome, I know I've always like to see the "How-to" in other CJ's, there's always some new tricks to be learned, and that's the beauty of this game! There's always something new!

If you saved those I'm flattered! And of course I don't mind, to the contrary do it anytime you want, I'm glad to help in any way I can.

As for the NAM, my guess is that it's like anything else, the more we use it, the easier it is!

    Thanks for your visit!

    Take care

    Hebl

Hi hebl, and welcome to Anduin Valley!

Thanks for the enthusiastic comment! And if I remember correctly, it's the first time I have a 11/10 rating  18.gif

well 91 pages would sure be a very long read, not to mention a modem meltdown if you are on dial-up  17.gif, seriously I'm glad you liked the region shot.

As far as Barad-Dur is concerned, there's something in the works, or I should say in the future plans, but the "real" work has not begun yet. Well... it has... in my head... but I keep changing my mind about details so!!! But there'll be definitely a darker side to Anduin Valley!

    See you!

Jacky (jacqulina) - CJ: "Just wanted to show you my terraforming"

Hey Jacky, the week was good, hoping you had the same, good to see you.

Glad that you liked Tolfalas, which was a bit different as a city usually goes, but it was a crazy idea that I just had to follow...

Enjoy the weekend my friend! And can't wait to see more pics from you in your CJ!

    Take care

    Rayden - New Haven

Hi Rayden, Welcome to Anduin Valley.

It's always a pleasure to see new visitors in our small country.

If you do read it from the beginning, you're a very patient person, I'm not sure I'd do it personally!  18.gif

As for the tutorials, I always liked (and still do) when other CJ'ers explain how they do things, that I can't help it, I'm compelled to take those pics.

I've always believed that we have a lot to learn from one another in this game.

So, thanks for your good words, and looking forward for more of your comments!

    Take care!

    Mikeaut

    Hi Mike,

First I must say that the honor is mine, more so after listening to your review in the podcast! I just couldn't believe my ears, you were very generous with the superlative comments and now my main problem will be to live up to these remarks of yours!  2.gif

Seriously Mike, I really enjoyed listening to it and was really pleased with it, (how could it be otherwise!!!) You guys are doing an incredible work with the podcast! I salute your commitment and the hard work you're pouring into this project. 44.gif

Thanks for everything, that is: the review and your visit!

Do come back whenever you like!

    Take care

    Fabiocb - RASEC

Hi Fabio, I guess I'm suffering from"Terraforma accutis" hehehe.

But seriously, in RL there's always some terraforming to be done before building anything, so I guess we're just reflecting that.

For the bridges, as Bruinen Fjord will be a medium city, you're right there's no need for a lot of bridges, those will do fine.

See you in Rasec!  BTW the last update was so beautifu! People you MUST go see Fabio's Japanese garden, it's a beauty!

    Take care!

For those who don't like tech shots, just a little more patience, beginning in update 4 we will have some developments, and after that it'll be as usual. Thanks for your patience.

Always a pleasure to read each and everyone of your comments and suggestions, as Jason would say "keep em coming!"

    See you monday!

    In the meantime

Highway 66 looks cool in Anorien. 3.gif The tech shots are a little boring (I prefer the finished product, myself 2.gif), but whatever floats your boat. Keep it up.

Speaking of 66, June 6th, 2006 will have some sort of weird significance (esp. if you remove the 0 from 06). [6/6/06]

And why not, I did that with Jeronij's CJ, why I wouldn't with yours. If the reading is good, I'll keep on reading.

About tech shots, I love them, and I'm sure more people do as well, as they very instructive, and there is always something to learn from it, at least I do 2.gif

Starting a city from scratch doing the transit network first is quite chalenging, isn't it?

Loved your last update and I've noticed that your terraforming style it's quite similar to mine, only that we use different rules, you plan ahead, and I build as it comes.

Looking forward for your nest update, cya

Awesome! This is very exciting! A new and fresh canvas for you to carve and sculpt your unique style with, I find it very ineteresting to see how you make and design your cities, and you continue you give me ideas and inspiration! Thanks!

Excellent Exit! Very realistic, the gas stations and cafe's look fantastic, I love your use of the New York Buildings. A really cool mosaic that one.

Oh, and I LOVE that sunken avenue! It looks awesome, I can't wait to see what will surround it. Even your tech pictures are strangely beautiful! Great work my friend!

EDIT: Oh, I just realised this, according to the reply listing in the CJ forum you hvae the 3rd highest number of comments for any CJ ever!  Congrats!

    Cheers, choco.

Hi there, thanks for explaining mi the matching borders thing. Well, I think it's the time to start using photoshop 3.gif

The transportation layout looks very realistic so far. I also like the whole terraforming.

Anorien also looks very promising. Great job again Darmok.

And again, thanks for explaining me how to match borders.

Some may find the tech shots a bit arid, but it's interesting to see a finished area and to compare it to what it looked like when it started. They give a certain insight into how the game really works (and some of the ways to work with it). Incidentally, I will have to remeber the railroad trick for the future. It will save me the time and irritation of having to redo an area that took long enough in the first place. Thanks again for another great update.

    Hi John.

Great updates my friend. The Photoshop tutorial was quite useful and your inclusion of tech shots always is very helpful - not only for n00bs... I enjoy seeing how others do it. I like your road layout very much, it looks quite 'natural' (terrain-conforming). I know the feeling that I don't know what to build on a free city tile - or even worse - on a developing city tile. I'm just stuck then and actually often end up laying out a high-capacity road network... 4.gif.

Concerning '1984', it unfortunately isn't even too far-fetched. My high-school history teacher often referred to that book, that's why I've decided to read it. And unlike the characters in Philip K. Dick's 'The Man in the High Castle' (I don't know if you know it, I didn't like it very much though), Winston Smith is likeable.

    Have a great weekend John.

    - Phil

EDIT: I completely forgot to comment on the mosaic. The exit looks simply amazing. Great use of Dhoppe's rest area.

About the rural highways, I know they don't appear in the region view, but it's a price I'm willing to pay, for the simple reason that IMO that's the best looking highway, the one that best represent what the highway looks like in Canada, the ingame ones with cement walls are OK within a BIG city, but outside that's what they look like.

And it gives us some diversity! And rest assure that I'll follow my alter-ego adventures in your CJ!

    Cheers!

    S_A_ (Shadow_Assassin) - The Savannah Way

Yeah I know that the tech shots can by a little dry sometimes, and that's why this was the last time I'll do a complete transit network before beginning building the city itself, not only whe you only do a rough sketch it takes less time, but it also allows for a good mix of tech shots and eye-candy later on when posting updates. On this I agree with you. And knowing you prefer the finished product, seeing you here commenting gives even more value to your support mate, thanks for that it's appreciated!

Yeah it's the year of strange things (666) and also at 1 hour 2 minutes 3 seconds 04-05-06 (april/4th/2006) it was 1-2-3-4-5-6 This will never happen again! (hearing Twilight Zone theme in the background)

    Take care my friend

    Rayden - New Haven

Believe me, I really take this as a huge compliment, and I'm truly impressed.

And doing so if you ever have a question on something you saw, just ask I'll do my best to answer you.

For the reason I've already explain I like 'em too. And also glad that they still have a purpose these days. And I also agree with you on the fact that we always have something to learn!

After all, IMO learning is one of the main purpose of life! (hey I should write citations!.... nahhhhh  18.gif )

Yes it is a challenge, at least for me it is, cause in this particular case I've decided to stick with it (almost), and try to do something around that "skeleton" if I may say so.

Don't believe for a minute that I've planned everything....  20.gif I'm probably the worst planner there is! I mostly go from a general idea, thinking that I should zone like this or that in that particular sector, and also things like "well in this city I'll use a lot of cycleways" well, you get the picture... and then I go with the flow, I very often change my mind and wing it on the fly! A good example would be the highway exit pics I've shown, I completely redo the whole thing because I thought that the first one I made was not up to my taste.

Whew! that's a long answer, I'm carried away when I'm talking about things I like!

    Ok enuf' said for now.

    See you next time!

    Take care

    Choco (Chocolatemax285) - Green Depra

Hey Max, yep a new canvas, but sometimes it can be stressing! you know... the white page syndrome!

But, it never last long, ideas are always pouring out of my head....it's kind of difficult sometimes not to forget them! If AVR still give you some inspiration I'm glad!

As for the exit, I just pictured the one we have around here and tried my best to recreate one, just a matter of observation here. The only problem in using the Rural Highway with the diagonal streets (so the grey textures are matching), is the fact that we can see cars coming the wrong way on those exits! But that's a small price to pay for such flexibility!

That particular zone in Anôrien (the new york buidings) is kind of a Yuppie's nest, perhaps not representative of the whole town/city. Or is it????? (mystery.... mystery...) you'll see that later on!  2.gif

The sunken avenue is the result of me wanting to try BuddyBud's pieces that's the only excuse..hehehe.

About your comment on the number of replies, it's you and all AVR readers that are responsible for such a rating. I'm just enjoying the ride!

    Take care!

    SpecialEddie

Thanks Eddie, that's exactly the look I was striving for!

    Take care!

    Tracker - Graph X Services

Hey Tracker, you know what? It's a thing I've never actively controled,(besides blasting some lots I don't want) the kind of sets that the game is using, so I would be at a loss to try to answer you on this one! But I think that there's in fact a lot of European styled buildings that grew there!

    Always good to see you!

    Take care

P.S. I just noticed in your sig that you're going CS2, when you do, you'll love it! I'm using it since the day it was available and never regretted it! The best edition of Photoshop EVER!

And I'm working with it since version 5.

The only downside is that it's a ressource HOG, be prepared to invest in some RAM!

But again, you will just love it!

    bat

Hi bat, thanks for the constant support!

    GMT - Greater Columbia River

    Hi Torben, thanks man!

    GaBoR

Hey GaBor, just sharing some ideas, ans I'm always on the lookout for new ones!

    Thanks!

Battlecat - Terra - An evolving region

Hi Battlecat, glad you liked it, as for the unkinking (sic) technique, it's just an adaptation of what I saw on another CJ!

    Enjoy the week!

Szarkoz - The Free Democratic Nation of Caledonia

Hi Szarkoz, you're welcome, glad to help in any way! And as far as photoshop is concerned, if you don't have access to it, you can use The Gimp, just follow the links I gave to Capitol1 in the last update, it's a great piece of software and it's free!

So far I really like working in Anôrien! Though I progress kind of slowly in that area, working a lot with the LE for some custom contents.

    See you in Caledonia!

    Take care

    Anubis - anubis' cities

    Thanks for the visit anubis!

    Rhéal – rw0381c

    Salut Rhéal,

Well, so far we're not doing too good in the memorial cup tournament, I hope the Cats will do better!

As I am from Québec it would be a shame not to suport our home team.

And I really think that there's always some new things to learn in that game, that's the great thing about creative games like this one, the only limit is your imagination!

    Take care!

    Threestooges

Hey threestooges, hehehe, going from the Atlantic to the Pacific with Rhéal (rw0381c) and you! That is from New-Brunswick to California!

It's an affordable way to travel  2.gif  Yes, the tech shots, even when we like them, ARE arid, but they're a necessary evil  11.gif

At least for some of us who like terraforming their cities.

As I said to Battlecat, the unkinking technique was adapted from something I saw in another CJ, (probably Jeroni's).

Sometimes I'm also using the highway tool to do that.

    See you next time

    Take care!

Yoman3 - United Republic of Ankara

    Thanks yoman!

    MS (magpieshooter) - Kinata Region

Hi MS, glad you appreciated it, but I can't wait to show some development! Even I'm a bit impatient to show some results!

    Have a great week!

    Phil (PhilsCafe) - Acorn Creek

    Bonjour Phil!

I think that we're all newbies in a way that there's always something to learn! The day I'll cease learning, it'll be pretty boring!

I never read The man in the High Castle, I'll have to look up that one! Though Phillip K. Dick is capable of the best and sometimes the worst I can't say that I liked everything I read from him.

And, in a way, you can extrapolate some of the content of 1984 in todays reality, if you look at the internet, isn't it possible to rewrite history everyday? or several version of it at least. And the invasion of privacy by the governments?

    Creepy!

Anôrien is becoming a bit special to me right now, cause I'm working more and more with the LE and SC4 Tool when I want something specific. Though It slow the game itself, it's being more satisfying in the end!

Thanks for the visit Phil, and see you!

    Enjoy the week!

    ThomasAH - Zorturia

Don't worry about missing some updates Thomas, glad you like the transit network, had fun doing it, though at the end I was getting  abit impatient to begin zoning!

And here's some more of those tech shots!

    Tot ziens!

Another update gone by! And the story of Anduin Valley is continuing. A bit more patience for those who prefer eye candy, it'll come soon enough!

Thanks to each and everyone of you who are caring for AVR, your support is the blood of this CJ.

    See you friday!

    In the meantime

Take care and enjoy life 10.gif

Citzenship? Very cool indeed!  Interesting problem you ran into with that tunnel.  Also very cool how much of a difference the change to the bridge made to it's appearance.  Looking forward to seeing the first round of construction here.

though at the end I was getting  abit impatient to begin zoning!quote>

Haha, I know where you're talking about, the airport which I'm currently working on is taking

much time and I can't wait to begin with other things! Ooh, wait, this is your cj, Great update!

I really like those tech shots, You can learn alot from them,

btw: is Bruinen Fjord going to be a large city or more like Callenhad, a small city with lots of

farms? If I look at the transportation pics I think it going to be a large city, isn't it?
