Fantastic work, everyone! you make those canal kits look amazing, I've never tried then before.

I have, however, been wasting some time building canals in my own style (instead of updating my C.J.), here are some early results:
canalbuilding19sf.jpg
canalbuilding21zv.jpg
canalbuilding32cp.jpg
Before anyone asks...no, the roads under the bridges are not transit-enabled... eye candy only.
The roads just end, here is an example:

More pics...

I've never been fully satisfied with my attempts at canal building in the past, this time, I think I might have got it right!

So let's see some more, people... I need some ideas to steal!11.gif

WOW!  Alright, I need to know how that is done.  That's absolutely incredible.  Well done, very well done.  I mean it, how is it done?

Amazing work psteverific, a lot of work gone into those pics. The result is stunning.

I think youve inspired me to go back to the traditional way of building the canals.29.gif

And now the easy way to get waterways.

Camros, I REALLY like how you've used Peg's canals...!  It's a very realistic use IMO.  I've found that I tend to make narrower canals, and the SKURKs (the larger ships) look out of place and too big for the size of the canals... you really fit them well!

Would you mind posting an overview picture of your city so we (or just I 2.gif) can see the entire lay-out and how it fits with your city?

Great work!

thanks guys, that's kind of you to say

utora: That looks awsome! I didn't realise that opies canals had a diagonal set added on, you've made great use of them!
It reminds me of the citadel in Halifax, only huge and full of water.

Well, the short answer is that the canals are dug, using a combination of the mayor mode and god mode terraforming tools, and I've used Marrasts seawall kit (on the stex) allong the banks, but you could use any seawall kit.
The bridge height mod is essential, and a good slope mod will help alot.
I'd be willing to put together a more detailed tutorial, if people think it would be worthwhile.

...anyways, to get back on topic, here's a couple more pics:

I like to keep my canals green, and natural!9.gif

I have many of these in some of my urban areas.

SC4, Forevermore!

Currently preoccupied with architecture school...lurking with caution.

Brown boxes mean that you miss the model files. Try to find out what you are missing. I downloaded the complete amount of Oppies canalstuff (complete with diagonal & narrow canals and drawbridges and boats) from SimCitycentral.net. If you simply put them in your plugins, they should work without a problem! Hope this helps

Very impressive pics, guys. I particularly like your real canals, psteverific. A lot of painstaking terraforming went into those and they look fantastic.

You also need to have Rush Hour installed. Plain SC4 doesn't know how to handle BAT models.

I thought i would share my canal pictures aswell. This is Springfield, The canal is mostly seen in the downtown area. Although it does go through many other parts of the city, it is just in broken up sections. These are my best canal views.
Here they are:

this is such an impressive thread.  I am humbled by the workmanship and creativity demonstrated thus far.

I have just completed a small canal in my CJ Newtopia Valley .  this canal is located on a pedestrian only Commercial Shopping Plaza called Poseiden's Reef and uses a combination of PEGs CDK OWW and variable width canal sets:

Wow soldyne, what a wonderful work !!! I really like all thoses canals !!! I'll never do at the same levels, mine ar farthest worst...8.gif15.gif mostly because i'm always trying to use all the space to build res, com and ind... i don't know why but i always use all the space, i can't manage to put more parks, vast spaces that don't serve to make more pop...8.gif (maybe a psychological barrier14.gif46.gif  lol 9.gif)

thanks for the compliment Superbeber!  I used to think and build like that too.  but these pics are just from a single city within a very large region.  when I started playing regionally I quickly lost my desire to build sardine cities.  I do have some skyscrapper forests in the works however.  what great region would be without those?

Thanks for starting this thread as there are many great canals being posted for everyone to see and learn from.
