Yes, it seems a lot like cheating. :)

But it reminds me of the "Civilization: Test of Time" game and the Midgard scenario, where you could travel between four parallel maps - Skies, Land, Underwater and Underground. You had different choices of units and development in each realm.

Frankly, I wouldn't be in a rush to build regular buildings underground. That's rather wacky. And what should happen to the water buildings which are already seen both under and on the surface?

If there existed a BA set of structures made especially for the purpose of creating an underground city, I'd probably give it a go. For example, instead of a pond, you get an underground river. Instead of roads you get tunnels to connect zones in your city!

Anyway, keep experimenting.

Oh yess yep that's what i'm trying to compare, atm I'm comparing the water treatment plant, there are 2 versions, the underground one and surface one, trying to figure the differences and what tag causes to switch the simulator to underground mode :)

edit:

For now its unclear what makes a building possible to be built underground, but the time spent will be too much, so I continued constructing my mega city, its nearing 1,4 mil inhabitants, its above the normal big cities out there probably ranking in top 100 population cities :)

@THijSCiTy Love your experiments and documentation. You investigate many things in this game that I have thought of sporadically while playing.

For the record, though, I think reaching 2 mio. inhabitants is where your city will really stand out from "regular" big cities from players. My usual maximum for filling out the whole map with a realistic setting for a really big city is around 1,8-1,9 mio inhabitants.

I'm currently working on a new city - perhaps the successor to Parksville.

It's named Vladislavus, and it currently has a population of 24k. My hope is that this city's population will eventually reach 1 million.

I've realized that I don't have to overwhelm my Sims with services at the very start of the game. The very start of the game is when I worry about zones and roads, not schools and police. Right now the city's economy isn't able to support an army of all of these, so I will have to move in some more tax-payers. IIRC outside road/rail connections raise the demand for Commercial and Industrial. I feel like this will help me a decent bit while building up my city. ok why did i type out all of THIS this is basic knowledge that every SimCity player should already know by now

Turns out, maybe I didn't have to make a successor to Parksville, because I've just managed to save its economy.

    Lemme give you some context:

In its current state, Parksville was in dire condition. Whenever I load up the city, it would at first have an income of 5k simoleons, and then fall drastically below zero. Turns out that an understanding of the growth cap mechanism did wonders. Basically, I just built more airports (increasing commercial growth cap), seaports (increasing industrial growth cap), road/rail connections (increasing industrial AND commercial growth cap), and libraries (increasing residential growth cap. After that, the city was moovin' again.

Here are some screenshots after the "economy rescue" (I also changed the building set to European because it looked kinda nicer.)

    Spoiler

    The Old Business District

    Parksville Spaceport

Also, the population rose from 200k to over 400k, thus unlocking me a Spaceport. Quite nice, I do think so myself.

I've developed Parksville a bit more. Population is well above 500k, final goal is 600k. Here are some more screenshots.

    Spoiler

    616a127b11803_Parksville-Apr.142207-4302.jpg.f576f19aaf2e67aa9846c51eed4c58a9.jpg

This is the entirity of Parksville, a middle-sized metropolis situated near the coast. I don't even know what words to describe this screenshot with, so let's move on.

    616a127ed65c8_Parksville-Feb.92192-65209.jpg.4553aacfa5505d509029ba9802f4b3a3.jpg

This is Airport Island. It is split into 3 main islands, which both perform different functions. The solar panels keep the airport powered (the water is sourced from Parksville's main water network), while the police station ensures a safe experience for the passengers. The only way of accessing Airport Island is through subway.

    616a12815b8cf_Parksville-Apr.172207-4328.jpg.b0dd9843ef832545750cfed4ea784fe8.jpg

Last but not least, we have the Island of Grief. This is where the nation's worst criminals reside. Security is tight, and a wall keeps the criminals where they should be. Only police are allowed to enter the Island, and trespassers are punished severely.

Man, maybe I should create a City Journal.

or maybe not. I suck at writing.

Please do. It would be fun to see a city journal from beyond the SC4 scope. There are some from "Cities: Skylines" so why not?

And I don't think you need to be a poet. *:P I'd say there are screenshot and narrative-driven CJs. I now do a screenshot based myself - some words of explanation and all the rest is basically a slideshow. Pretty quick and easy.

I recently uploaded to the STEX a city of mine, Twaddleborough.  I had planned to do a bit more work on it before uploading, take it up the just past the year 2050 (ingame), but by the late 2000s I felt it had gone as far as I could take it, so I decided to stop at high point and put it on the exchange.  That said, I might decide to re-visit it at a later date, but for now it's pretty much "complete" (inasmuch as anything created in this game can be).

Anyway I figured I'd share a few of the latest photos:

    bTz26tM.png

To begin with, a (composite) panorama of the whole city it is full glory (Twaddleborough, 1st January 2010)

    EI0DpsR.png

In the centre of these towerblocks is the city's "Inaugural Park", so named as it was the very first recreational structure I placed.  It also happens to be located more or less at the geographical dead centre of the city map, something I didn't realise until much later.  A happy accident.  :8)

    ZIUGvyY.png

The Mayor's dwelling.  A well to do part of the city indeed.

    kUyKzsb.png

City Hall, the "Palace of Indecision" as I've taken to naming it...  ;)

    7KKtHGR.png

    Here the learned do gather.

    DbGPfjd.png

By the edge of the city, some fresh zoning for more developments and a clearing amongst the trees for a prospective Space Port, which remains unbuilt as it's only the year 2010 in Twaddleborough and I don't fancy cheating the building in.  Maybe someday...

Here's the cool looking SC3K city @The Thinker shared to the STEX for anyone curious:

By the way, if you'd like we can edit in a link from your file description pointing to your post above.

Let me know if this would go well (or it could be done yourself if you wish).

Recently created a terrain loosely based on Selatapura's geography and started building an Asian-themed city on it.

(All images are linked to their original size counterpart.)
    000-preview.jpg.65d0522ae295bec20b9eba4f88958417.jpg001-preview.jpg.1b6432c59dc7899665217128d24bbb0e.jpg002-preview.jpg.dba95879df436310a17669879869e41f.jpg

Bonus: An airport I previously put together using the "access all buildings" cheat, plenty of patience, and a lot of repeatedly re-zoning, demolishing, and generally just coercing the game into developing runways how I needed it to (so said airport would actually be functional).

    SC3K Pagema City !

Wondered little about SC3K, like SC2000 a lot. Little hard core vanilla gameplay. Idea with limited resources, build slowly get a established level of occupance. Annoying offscreen scrolling when draging pipes, roads !?!, little experimental. Hope to eventually can enjoy those great custom buildings wich popup the last months !

    E0z0Tum.jpg

    Enjoy !
