Does SimCity 4 Support HDR Monitors?

Hello,

Since 2015, HDR monitors are going mainstream. Availability of HDR monitors made Microsoft implemented HDR in Windows 10. We know that SimCity 4 supports 2 mode of color: 16-bit and 32-bit. With the support of 32-bit color, does SimCity 4 supports HDR? Or, maybe 32-bit color means other thing?

Thanks.

Hi chfzdn,

While I don't own a HDR or 4K monitor, I imagine it depends whether or not SC4 supports the custom resolutions they use. There was a topic a while ago where someone had trouble with an "Ultrawide" monitor, and it was incompatible for the game to be natively scaled properly to that size.

According to this article the resolutions SC4 supports are:
(Archived on the Wayback Machine because the original site is no longer online.)

16:9 Aspect Ratio

  • 1024 x 576
  • 1024 x 600
  • 1360 x 768
  • 1366 x 768
  • 1600 x 900
  • 1920 x 1080
  • 2048 x 1152

16:10 Aspect Ratio

  • 1280 x 800
  • 1440 x 900
  • 1680 x 1050
  • 1920 x 1200

I made a post here which compares the difference between two color bit depth options.

In summary, there doesn't seem to be too much difference visually, other than appearing slightly more grainy as colors are simplified on the 16-bit option. It's possible on some systems there might be a small performance gain from using 16-bit instead, but I'd imagine the difference is negligible.

Hi chfzdn, I used to connect my notebook to Sony 4k HDR monitor with a HDMI cable. It worked. I connected the HDR with my discrete graphics card Nvidia 1050ti, because I use dgvoodoo as a wrapper to drive SimCity, so everything is fine. If you have problem with your discrete graphics card you can see my solution as reference. I hope it helps.

Best Regards,

No.

SC4 will work with HDR monitors, provided they meet the other legacy specifications needed for SC4. But, there is no way anything made before HDR became a thing, can support HDR without a patch or altered code to add support for it.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.
