So I installed LK Terrain alongside SHK HD rock mod 3, and for some reason the rock textures are really low quality. Are these incompatible with each other or is something else going awry? I'm running W7 with a 1050ti in hardware mode.

Here's a picture for reference:

Someone will prolly reply before I can check into this, but if the LK is not also HD then that is likely the problem and they wouldn't be compatible. (Tis my bedtime so I can't check into it right now.) There may be some info in my Shoppes thread which you can find on my About Me page of my Profile.

There is nothing to stop you mixing and matching between terrain, rock, water, beach mods etc, even if some are HD and others not.

I believe all that's happening here is that the rock textures are being hugely stretched, which makes them look of lesser quality. If that's the case, there isn't a lot you can do about it, except altering the terrain. But it might be worth checking you've not got any other Rock Mods interfering (loading after the one you want).

Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

I think it has to do with the scaling factor (or tiling factor) of the terrain mod.  Each terrain mod uses a scaling factor to get the ground detail. If you use another mod that doesn't match the scale of the terrain, then you will get the results that you are showing.

Here is an excerpt from the Sudden Valley files that explains the tiling factor.

Various terrain mods available on the LEX and STEX utilize different "Terrain Texture Tiling Factors" which is a parameter that controls the zoom or scale with which a terrain texture will display in-game.

The Gobias Berner Oberland Terrain Mod - and all future Gobias Terrain Mods - utilizes a .0976x tiling factor.  This allows the game to tile a texture at roughly twice the size of the original MAXIS default.  When used in conjunction with HD textures this setting allows higher resolution of terrain.  It allows the modder to create more variety in detail while reducing texture-repetition but still preserves the sharpness of the original texture.

The Lowkee Appalachian Terrain Mod utilizes a .0488x tiling factor.  At this setting a texture will appear at twice the size as it would with the Gobias .0976 setting (or 4x larger than the MAXIS default).

Since changes to this setting dramatically affects the appearance of scale I have included two different versions of each mod compatible with either Lowkee's tiling factor (.048x) or Gobias' tiling factor (.097x).

You solved it. Another rock mod was the cause. I just did a search and found I had mistakenly installed  Pegasus' PPond rock mod. Looking at the pictures it seems to match the textures I've been trying to remove.

Sorry for the waste of time. I learned some new things about terrain mods though so it wasn't all too terrible. Thanks all!

The great thing is since Simtropolis is a learning community, others who may search for this and similar topics in future will discover solutions too.

So rest assured, you've not wasted any bit of anyone's time, and have actually helped others in the process. *;)

The other neat thing about the tiling factor is that you can adjust it in the Reader and make Standard Definition terrain mods appear to be much sharper.
