I have a performance issue which I suspect might be due to my own custom made roads for the game, made using Blender and the new in-game road editor.

First, my system specs:

  • Windows 10 Home
  • i7-8700K
  • 16 GB DDR4 RAM
  • GTX 1080 Ti

This system should be able to handle basically anything I throw at it. Yet, the game slows down dramatically when I approach 20 000 inhabitants in the game.
I tried removing all mods. I tried reinstalling the game. I tried start a new map without any mods, but still using my custom roads. And the problem persisted. But, as soon I replaced all my custom roads with the standard built-in roads the problem disappeared.

I am new to making custom assets, but I would argue that the roads are designed within reasonable specifications. Most of them are with <100 tri with 1024x1024 images for close-ups and 128x128 images for lod.

So my question is: Are there any performance hits related to custom roads I should be aware of, and what are the steps I can take to mitigate them?

Another question: Many of my roads have an emphasis on bikes, and I can see I have A LOT of bikes around the city. Could the sheer number of bikes affect the performance, even though the city is still relatively small?

I suppose the only way to find out is to upload your roads onto the workshop so others can try them out and see :D :P

In all seriousness, the amount of vehicles/bikes definitely does affect the performance, although given your specs at 20k I doubt there should be *that* big of an issue -- maybe if you post some more comparisons of your roads to vanilla ones we can try and see what's causing the issue?

Also, are you using loading screen mod? You could enable your roads one-by-one and see how much they're contributing to your overall memory usage.

One thing don't go overboard with custom roads as they eat up a lot of memory.. The other is though 16 gig of ram might sound a lot now, but when you add in lots of assets it really does eat up the memory and what can not fit in the memory will be dumped to the pagefile.. As it is not just the main asset such as a house that takes up memory it is all the props the creator may have used to make their creation that adds to the memory being used..

I just got a new system built and had 32 gig of ram installed I have about 1300+ assets and I opened up Task Manager and checked to see the amount of ram being used and it read over 17 gig of ram was allocated to the game.. Now if I only had 16 gig of ram that overflow would of been dumped to the pagefile..  With Loading Screen Mod installed the amount of memory being used is low, until you hit that last part of loading before you enter your city and the amount of memory used shoots up rather sharply..

So you have really only two options reduce the assets you have or add in more memory..

Sorry for the late reply! Apparently i did not recieve any notifications. I can mention that I do not use any other types of custom assets at the moment.

I just spent a little time trying to isolate which specific road type was causing the problem and found the culprit! This road type uses lanes where cars and bikes share the same lane. Apparently for me this created massive slow downs on the simulation speed. I replaced it with another one of my road types and it now runs smoothly at max simulation speed.

    I appreciate the input.

Bummer really this causes issues, as this is pretty normal way for bicyclists in Denmark to travel, especially in lightly populated neighbourhoods. Anyway, guess I would have to find another solution for now.
