Take two with a much better picture. I think texturing is going to be fun because I have no idea how to do it and I obviously do not want the textures in the tutorial. This is more experimental for me then anything so I'm making any promises as to whether this will be released.

Yeah, I'm not understanding how to texture at all.... I think the process of how you do it has changed or I'm just plain out confused.

Taking a break from the texture, here's some more relot work.

Enjoy! I may stick to relots if I can't figure out the textures.

You need to be more specific about what you're having trouble with.

    texture5.jpg

There's a color and map slot available for "Diffuse". Diffuse is the color of the object itself. (the tutorial says to modify "Ambient" which is labeled as 3, but you don't need to touch that, idk why he says so).

The "M" stands for "map". Maps are things that go into materials. In gmax there's only a bitmap, and a checkers map. The bitmap map lets you load image files into gmax. The checkers map generates a checker pattern. In 3ds max there are tons of maps, like a noise map, which generates a noise pattern, a tiles map, which generates tiles/brick patterns, a color correction map, (which you can put a bitmap inside of) which adjusts the colors of things. So all of those little boxes like the one with the M in it are places where you can put maps. So for example, you should be able to control the amount of opacity using a bitmap (a texture) rather than just percent.

So anyway, in gmax, all you do is have a material like this, click on the box labeled "Diffuse", select bitmap, and then load your texture.

Then you apply the material to an object, by either selecting the object and pressing the "apply" button, or by dragging and dropping the sphere onto the object in the viewport.

That will apply your object. After that, select the object, and go to Modifiers>UVW Coordinates>UVW Map. UVW Maps (which is not the same kind of "map" as before. This is called a map because it's mapping texture coordinates to object coordinates) basically define how big your texture is. If you have a brick texture which represents a 10x10 section of wall, you make a UVW Map with that dimension.

    So to summarize:

    1. Click on the box next to Diffuse, select bitmap, and then select your texture image.

    2. Apply the material to an object.

    3. Apply a UVW Map to an object to give the texture dimensions.

@Jasoncw Yeah, I was just plain out confused with how to texture before, but  I think I got it now. Thanks for the summary.

Check out a sign I made. Now to figure out how to get it into the game and of course make it into a prop.

Your the second person to ask me this. I was more or less just making a sign for the existing one, but perhaps I will give it a go. I'd be more likely to make a Babies R Us over Kids R Us though.

@Jasoncw So I'm on lighting now, and wondering how I would light the letters and the windows too? I'm being thrown off by the tutorial because it has one modeling lights from a suggested lamp and obviously I have no need for a spotlight from a 'lamp'.

Otherwise, I think this is turning out pretty nicely:

If you have an object, you can type "nitelite" at the beginning of the object's name, and it will make it light up at night. Once you do it and see it you'll recognize the type of lighting that this makes from other gmax BATs that you've seen.

If you have a light, it will shine during both day and night. To make it only shine at night, you can type "nitelite" at the beginning of the light's name.

If you mistype the nitelite prefix (I think it is exactly "nitelite" (not including the quotes of course) but it's been a while so I'm not 100% sure), it won't work.

There are other ways of doing lights to make a better effect for signage like that, but for now just do one of the two things to do the nitelites. Once you get more comfortable with gmax in general you can go back and do more advanced things.

What Sears is this? Auto Center, hometown or  appliance store? Looks great!

Auto center, though either Ceafus or I will likely pursue a hometown store in the future as well.

@Jasoncw Help! What went wrong here? The building shows up fine in some views while others I get this blacked-out pixelated mess:

@RRetail Have you seen the new McDonald’s look that would be a easy box building for you to make also with the newer remodels of Wendy’s. Best of luck buddy.

    Is that a 3x3 and a 2x2 version?

Have not yet decided on what size the lot will be. Pictured here was a test 3x3.

I'm well aware of the new looks of the more boxy restaurants. Since we do already have some restaurants covered in a realistic format from their respective era, new modern versions will be on the low end of my priority list. Personally, I like the classic styles better with the exception of Taco Bell.

It's technically not a store, but more of a service.
