So I've been roaming around on Simtropolis a lot lately, seeing a lot of awesome projects in progress. One of the things I don't see anyone working on is custom Road-side props, primarily Traffic Lights and Railroad Crossings. My first goal is to make North American variants of those two. I've already dumped the meshes and textures of most road props, if you need them let me know, it will save you some time (time we all barely have :p)

This is what the files of the traffic lights look like:

I also noticed that Red light for cars means Green light for pedestrians and vise versa. Interesting fact: Green light turns the whole cube green, red light turns it purple.

The model is something for later, but that won't be a big issue.

I hope some of you might be able to help me with this :)

I don't know why it keeps adding the images at the end, sorry for that. I'm new to Simtropolis.

It's because the forums are broken right now. Just upload the image(s) you want to use but don't insert them! It's a hassle but right now it's the only option it seems.

Nice work with the experimentation by the way!

Just guessing here, but taking a look at the texture file names for assets, it might just be a simple combination of the separate alpha/color/illumination maps, since they're all 1 color each. Maybe mess around with the rgb values to see which is which? I suspect the alpha channel should be consistent for all lights, as should the color, but it doesn't seem like it.

Edit: Checked the RGB values, now I'm not sure, since it's different for each one:

    • Ped red light is R 186, G 186,  B 0
    • Ped green light is R 189, G 190,  B 255
    • Red light is R 186, G 255,  B 192
    • Yellow light is R 0, G 189,  B 189
    • Green light is R 182, G 0, B 189

Seems like there are some similarities though...

The aci map is constructed like this:

    • Red Channel is Alpha Map (inverted)
    • Green Channel is Color Map
    • Blue Channel is Illumination Map

It seems like traffic lights use their own shader ("Custom/Props/Prop/TrafficLight"), so I dunno if they used the textures the same way as the regular props(if that's where the aci composition is coming from).

Very interesting, I remember you've been trying to modify these for a while. The best of luck with this!

The import of the ACI does not depend on the shader. But of course you have to apply the shader after the import.

Thanks for all the replies! I was on a sailing trip last week so I'll continue working on the traffic lights as soon as possible using the provided information.

I'm pretty sure you have already noticed, but BloodyPenguin released an American Traffic Lights mod not so long ago - so I guess he's your go-to guy if you run into any problems.
Looking forward to see what you will come up with! :)

Oh thanks Judazzz, hadn't noticed because I was away for a while, but thanks for the head's up. I guess I don't have to do anything anymore. All that's left is railroad crossings :P
