Problem with one-way roads after downloading NAM

Hi, I started playing SC4 a few weeks ago, this site has had lots of great info and I can usually find answers to my questions already posted.

I just installed NAM and it seems to be preventing me from connecting one-way roads in an intersection.  I use a grid layout of two one-way roads in opposite directions with one space in between., and after installing NAM I have problems re-connecting my roads if I bulldoze anything.  Sometimes it just wont let me connect the last road in the intersection at all, and I have to fudge the connection.  Other times it works just fine.

The pic with the industrial zones shows "before.  Then I bulldozed some roads to put in a landing strip, and tried to re-attach them afterwards, and they don't connect.

Any idea what the problem is?  Has anyone else experienced this?  Is this just because my city has "legacy" roads that I built before installing NAM, and the old and new roads don't mix?  Or is there some sort of special tile that I have to lay to make this work properly?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hiya! :)

I did the like this thinger for your post since it's one of the most articulate first posts I've seen. Sorry, to interrupt tho since I don't yet know the answer to your question nor where to find it. Fortunately, an expert'll be along sooner or later.

Good luck.

If you join up one way roads in a 3 x 3 square with the NAM present you get a round-about.  You have something against Avenues??

As Nonny said, you really should be using Avenues here instead of parallel OWRs, but there are reasons why you might prefer this approach. Some like to see a median in the middle, also OWR is the faster network, pretty much bodged to ensure sims would actually use a OWR system.

However, the NAM OWR Roundabouts were not designed to work as you are using them here. The connections won't link up on the outside edges, unless the connection is diagonal. For straight connections, you need to start from the N, S, E or W centred tiles.

Check the links in my sig, Part 2 or my NAM Tutorials covers a lot of the new draggable pieces the NAM includes, along with how to use them.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

Thank you Corina Marie! I wanted to be sure to make it easy for people to help.

Mr. / Ms. Moose from Canada, I investigated your statement and not only that, the only roads that can come in / out of the rotary appear to be at 90 degree angles to each other that would meet in the middle of the rotary of they continued that far.  So my entire system of parallel one-way roads with a bonus strip / mass transit median seems to be toast.  I would consider uninstalling NAM, but of course I only discovered this after I replaced 457 Maxis bus stops with NAM bus stops... (which is how I originally discovered this problem... it is really hard doing all that demolition in a dense CBD without taking out a skyscraper or road now and then).

I don't suppose anyone has any ideas other than "come up with a new system pal"?  I really liked my one-way street system, the only traffic I'd ever had (either pre or post NAM) was at the one row of streets at the edge of town that was regular road, and it gave tons of parks and plazas for the people.

Rsc I guess you posted while I was typing... yeah I like the median for bonus tiles and looks.

Is there any way to get around the rotaries forming?  Or is that hard coded to always happen when you have a 3x3 donut of roads?

If you re-install the NAM, then I'm fairly certain, if you choose a custom configuration, then you can deselect the OWR roundabouts from being installed. However, I would say that they are very useful in a lot of scenarios, especially when you don't think the'll be that useful.

I have a possible suggestion that would let you keep your current setup.

I rarely use OWR so I'm not sure if this works or not, but what if you tried replacing the 8 tiles surrounding the bus stop with a regular road? I don't remember if that's an intersection in the game or not, but if it is, it would still allow traffic flow and you'd get to keep your OWR system because the roundabout roads make in the NAM are 2x2 instead of 3x3 like the OWR roundabout (meaning you wouldn't get a roundabout with the road, provided it works in this situation).

    Mr. bee, you're quite welcome.

As you are getting to know in our PM convo, I'm a baby member here on Simtropolis. Now, your above words imply to me a question to which I know the answer. In my RL, daughters and granddaughters introduce their elders to other elders and so I'll do that for the mooseyone elder (join-date-wise) member. This allows complimentary (right homonym or what ever it's called?) descriptions of what one knows or believes about the other without said other having to brag. ;)

So, in my case allow me to attempt an introduction for my Granpa Moose. He is male. 78 years old IRL. Knows more about computer programming (from the vacuum tube days up thru current stuff) than any other being on earth, this solar system, and prolly at least a quarter of the galaxy. I imagine him as a combination of Hari Seldon, Asimov himself, and my own loving father. Playing pretend, he lives on Trantor.

Ok, I know, I know: Kids should be seen and not heard. C'ya.

One possibility is to use the OWR roundabouts for your intersections.  There are also some larger roundabouts in the Avenue menu.  Try making a copy of your region changing the name (don't forget to change it in the init file as well).  You can then experiment with the NAM effects to your hearts content without messing up your active city.

Thank you all for the suggestions and advice.

I tried re-installing NAM and disabling OWR roundabouts, but this caused 1) existing roundabouts to disappear, which I expected, and 2) when I tried to re-build my intersections, it allowed me to place the roads, but then they disappeared instead of a proper intersection forming.  So I'm re-installing NAM now with default settings.

A solution that did work was MushyMushy's - if I just use regular road for the final connection in the intersection, that works and I end up with more or less what I want - the "box" intersection, with 3 of the 4 roads going one way, and just a few tiles of regular road for one of the legs which shouldn't mess things up and looks OK from my perspective.

If I have any further problems I will go ahead with Nonny's suggestion, but at least right now it appears I have a working solution.  I really appreciate everybody's help!

One follow up question - Nonny Moose and rsc both stated that avenues are superior to my one - way road system.  Why is that?  As far as I can tell, two parallel one-way roads seem like they'd be the same as an avenue, except they're cheaper and as far as I can tell more flexible (I can't put a median in the avenue).  Is there something that I am missing?

My take on the why-to-use-avenues is their connectability is friendlier. (Might be wrong tho.)

@donnie bee, you might try checking your My Documents\SimCity 4\Plugins\Network Addon Mod\INRUL Overrides folder for a file called "NetworkAddonMod_Roundabouts_OneWayRoads_Plugin_INRULs.dat".  If it's there, remove it.

For future reference the set-up you had would work if you removed the bus stop and the 8 tiles surrounding it in all directions. Then draw back in the OWR to create the roundabout, and then relink. It would basically look exactly as the one you have in the first image to the far left.

As for Avenues, the reason I would use them over multiple OWR would be for functionality. More intersections, the addition of the NWM (network widening mod which allows RD-6, TLA-5, etc extensions to the avenues) and increased turn lane functions (TuLeps). If you want more options for medians, you can search the STEX where some people have created add-ons to the medians that come with the NAM avenues of AVE6 and AVE 2. I included some of these that I have used.

To be honest, Trantor doesn't seem like that nice a place to stick Nonny, unless you mean after Second Foundation. Otherwise I think there would be far too many people.

To be fair, OWR is faster than Avenue, with a higher per-tile capacity as well, and TLA-5 & RD-4/6 aren't really proper avenue networks, but road networks, so there's that, too. You don't actually use the avenue network at all when you use those [NWM] networks. Still, Avenue is probably the better way to go (though I prefer alternating OWR grids for downtowns) because of the intersection compatibility; if you really need serious capacity, the NWM two-tile OWR will be more appropriate, and leaving a one-tile median won't cause this issue with the OWR-4 and OWR-5 networks. Keep in mind these require that the NWM be installed (under custom installation in the NAM install wizard), but IMO you should have those anyways, because they're too useful to not have around.

True, it is a wee bit crowded. 50 billion peeps at its height.

I envision Granpa's 50k posts to indicate a great desire to communicate. Like it's only 7 orders of magnitude from having chatted with every single inhabitant. And with his brilliance in computer stuff (from vacuum tubes on up) I also imagine he's done very well for himself there. Prolly owns and controls as much land area as the Imperial Palace itself. ;)
