I'm slightly different to all you people with your classic rock songs (mostly). I am going to go with Rockin' the Suburbs by Ben Folds. Just an excellent piece of music imo.

 

But I can barely choose one out of my iTunes library of 2087 songs.

What about Metal rock? anyone? Iron maiden.. ? I love Iron Maiden, those guys have incredible shows, and I love the historical lyrics from them.. They are the reason I studied music (besides my bachelor in Accounting and now my masters degree in international business).. 

 

Another bands I really dig are Yes, Guns n Roses, Michael Bolton, Bryan Adams.. well.. probably the same as we all in here..

 

Now, I have a recommendation for people who like metal. Its a brazilian group that sings in english called Angra. Now, listen to rebirth by them, and tell me if you like it or not!! nice solos, very good song.

Well, it could be worse. If he's into metal, you can at least suppose that he's probably not some airhead who only cares about fame and money, because let's face it: If you do Metal, you know very well that chances of commercial success are very slim. So you're either in it for the music, or not at all - which is a good attitude in my books. Secondly, excessive editing in the studio as well as playback to cover for a lack of actual musical talent are things that are generally frowned upon in Metal, so it's also about genuinely playing an instrument and genuinely using your voice and not about putting some words through a vocoder and add some underlying computer samples. Thirdly, Metal has some structural similarities to classical music and is, in fact, much more "compatible" to classical music than pop, for example. So while you may not be able to agree on what would be a good piece of music to listen to now or on the best radio station for a long car trip, there may be more similarities under the surface than one might think at a first glance.

Well, he's a vocalist, and trained as well.  In addition he is becoming an electrician, and hasn't quit his day job.  I'm not sure if he was able to get on with a new band when he moved to the Rock.

Sure.  You know there are only 13 notes of music in today's well-tempered scale(not counting quarter tones of oriental scales), and only so many titles to go around.  We've been at this seriously in our times since 1600 and a lot of notes were played well before that.  For example, the Pentatonic Scale described by Pythagoras:  If you want to hear it play only the black keys on the piano.  You can play a great deal of African music in that scale:  Amazing Grace, for example.

Metal is awesome.   Iron Maiden. Black Sabbath. Whitesnake... hmmm... are they metal? Maybe hard rock. I have a strong liking for one of the first metal guys, Alice Cooper, esp. "Poison." (The band of the same name is good too.) 

 

I never was much of a fan of Guns 'n Roses. I think it's the singer. I have the same problem with AC/DC. That's not a vocal style I particularly care for.

 

My favorites right now are modern symphonic metal bands. Nightwish. Apocalyptica. Kamelot. All awesome! (Nightwish's newest singer, Floor Jansen, is astonishingly good.)

 

Okay, here's a question from me to everyone:

 

I like Black Veil Brides and Escape the Fate. However, I find that they are constantly derided as "emo" and "screamo" bands. I'm really scratching my head on this one. I see very little difference between them and classic metal bands of the 80s. Is there a difference? Am I missing something here?  I mean, good lord, look at the band of BVB. They are clearly channelling KISS!

I wish people would understand that some if not most metal is actually cool stuff - and has origins in classical music. Disregarding the vocals of AC/DC and GnR, the actual guitar parts are amazingly written (well AC/DC is mostly chords but there are some cool riffs - Back in Black, Thunderstruck anyone?). 

 

The 80's produced what I find to have the best and worst in music . Glam/Hair Metal can be both but some of Van Halen's stuff is just amazing. Even now bands like Steel Panther channel their inner 80's in their music (mind you they are a parody band). Poison, Mötley Crüe, KISS, etc all came out of that era and produced classic songs.
