Double-Deck Bridge Experiment

Here is my experiment in creating a double deck bridge.  To get the trains on the bridge I created a special puzzle piece.  This puzzle piece is plopped on the highway at the ends of the bridge.  I also added ground train (and GLR) paths to the bridge pieces.

It works for traffic, automata, and UDI.

It is designed so that trains can use either side of the bridge.  Both sides could be ground rail, both sides could be GLR, or it could be mixed.  I have not yet tested GLR.

I had to change the Traffic simulator to get this working, so it possible that this mod may not be feasible for general use.   More testing will determine this.

Here is a passenger train on the bridge.   If you look carefully you can see a passenger train going the other direction on the left.

Here is a freight train.  It looks like the bridge is on fire!4.gif

Here is the puzzle piece that puts the trains on the bridge.  Traffic arrows are also shown.

Wow, great work. That is a great idea and the starting piece looks very realisticc and cool. You are definately a talented modder, and are great o have on simtropolis. Even the train looks pretty good, like its in an enclosed cage rail. This could be very handy and is a brilliant idea and stroke of genius. 48.gif But the question is, can the bridge model be changed to make the rail line look more complete?

Great work, keep it up, I look forward to seeing where this goes. 19.gif

Awsome!

It would be great to have that because double-decker bridges with road and rail are very common here.

This just adds to a already long list of modding achievements you are creating for yourself Smoncrie. Everything you mod is always of high quality and you never give up until you finish it. Like the Highway and El Rail On Slope Puzzle Pieces. I'm glad to see a member of SimTrop who is still willing to keep modding of SC4 high on the agenda. Great Job and this would be a great idea for roads. (Even though there is no double decker bridges in australia but that doesn't matter! You deserve bunnies!35.gif35.gif35.gif and some ducks as well 40.gif40.gif40.gif!

you have got to be the most talented modder at ST! maybe you'll even find a way to change the model ever so slightly so the train doesn't go through the bridges girders.31.gif

hmmm

maybe a double decker bridge could have busses and trains on the bottom and motorway on top.
or why not both motorways?

holy [censored] flowering [bleep] of a mushroom!

smoncrie, you're among the top modders on this site. who cares about SC5 now? the community has taken us so far, i doubt EA even imagined it.

i love the work! if it turns out workable and feasable, maybe we can work on other types of bridges

Wow that's incredible!  Smoncrie, how do you do that?  ANYTHING's possible with the BAT+Simcity's codes!

Prince_of_sims is absolutely right!  EA only created the game... BATters and MODders have made the equivalent of SC5, without the visual graphics... amazing!

hmm, you could pull this off as a double decker freeway too maybe?. All we'd need are some double decker freeway puzzle pieces.

Very nice!, people have been wanting this for ages now. I truely hope it all works out, then we can start turning out bridges that look like they should have a train or double deck on them 1.gif. 44.gif

Standby.

Now I feel guilty giving you that GLR model work, as you've got a lot of pressure to turn this experiment into a finished project. (Overexcited witnesses, be aware of the underlined noun 3.gif)

But what kind of changes to the traffic simulator? Were they to make the train paths functional, or just for puzzle-piece next to bridge placement?

And there's going to have to be a mondo task force on this, as there will be some pretty advanced modelling and texturing. Unless people are fine with its looks as it is.

Good job, smoncrie, you never cease to amaze.

Wile that is pretty damn cool, the lack of train tracks on the lower level of the bridge is bothersome. We'd need some new textures there. The highway suport sticking in the middle of the tracks on the connecting puzzle piece is no good either. So get soemone to change the graphics and make it actually look good, and you'll have done a great thing. 44.gif

FYI - double-decking of 2 same transportation modes is not possible in the game, while double-decking of for example, a highway and rail is possible - like in this thread...

excellent work

Actually, double decking two same transport modes should be perfectly possible. Just by using a simple trick. And that trick would be for say a highway, to have the first level as lanes 1,2,3 and the second level as lanes 4,5,6. Cars would then appear on the top three whenever the lower 3 get full or it could be reversed. I know they wouldnt really be seperate roads per se, but the visual effect might work satisfactorily. 1.gif

Back on topic, I must say though that this is most excellent work. Its unfortunate that textures cant really be changed and still look good in all likelyhood, but this is well worth living with the ones as they are. Very innovative.

Karybdis:  What do you mean they can't be changed?  I thought that we found a workaround for the bridge textures not registering by editing the instance values in hex instead of in the reader...I talked to Tropod about it last week.  Unless that only works for bridge-surface textures.
