Silly horsing around.

If you are going to kill someone (legally) why horse around with various drugs.  What's wrong with a nice big shot of phenobarbital?  Same drug used by most vets to put down animals.  The subject simply falls asleep and stops breathing.

Or, barbarically, a nice big shot of prussic acid.  Agony, if any, would be short.

Fortunately our Constitutional Court, in 1995, ruled that the death penalty is a violation of the Right to Life, something that the Apartheid government indiscriminately and arbitrarily took away, and subsequently abolished the death penalty as unconstitutional.

Well, they certainly got it right.  Everyone has this basic right, no matter how dissolute.

Depending on the country, it's much more humane that putting them in run-down, overcrowded prisons where they'll be beaten, raped, and psychologically ruined.  It's only good in an extremely fair justice system of course.

But the last topic you made about this only three months ago got locked.  I don't think it's re-open for discussion so soon.

Why execute the worst of the worst, it is the easy way out. Put them in solitary confinement with little to no human contact for the rest of their lives. They will soon be begging for death.

Though I disagree with suicide, abortion, capital punishment, and euthanasia, they should be made legal in more countries and states (for the following reasons in order: always, early term or when life is in danger, multiple counts of murder 1, when terminally ill).

This thread has a different premise.  Note the rather frivolous effort on the part of the condemned.  Shows the extent to which the courts allowed attempts to quash the sentence.

An argument over whether you have the right to know where the drug that's going to kill you was sourced from.

Well, that certainly does take the concept of labeling products for consumer protection to a new level.

It is interesting from a practical standpoint, though: most developed countries have abolished the death penalty. The US did briefly as well (from 1972 to 1976), but it was allowed again after stricter rules about when and how it could be used were put in place. It is, today, very difficult to actually execute someone in most states - the court proceedings can take decades, a life sentence in prison is often less burdensome on the system in the long run.

And with the number of developed countries that execute people down to almost none, finding a reliable source for the lethal injection drugs becomes tricky.

The good thing is that lethal injection is quick and painless when done properly.

    ^ Well said.

However, I am at a loss to understand why it needs specialized drugs.  There are lots of good poisons around.  Just whose conscience is assuaged by using exotic materials?

I am sorry but I have tainted view of justice, Machiavellian or not, I personally believe that fear should be imposed for order and peace. If I were to execute someone, I'll do it in the public are so that people will know what happens to those who crosses the law (of course there are certain parameters set for what crimes are legible for death penalty).

Don't be sorry.  I tend to agree with the notion of public executions.  If it is going to be a deterrent, it might as well be seen to be done.

The problem is that, in the past, such occasions turned into circuses and were more entertaining than admonitory.

And rotting heads on stake at the city gates? We've tried that, didn't work. Of course it will devolve into a circus. If you do not value life, or prefer it not to be valued, public executions are perfectly fine.

The atomic bomb is still a deterrent, even if Russia and the US do not resort to public shows of force (dropping them over the wilderness in the Rockies at New Years Day - would both show Obama that Putin's still got it and provide the worlds most exceptional fireworks display!).

This is inhumane and ridiculous. A developed country should not kill off their own population. It starts with murderers and ends with a guy who said the president is bad.

Abortions, until the fetus has a heartbeat, is simply removing cells which would be a baby, same as abstaining.

I like the idea of banishment, where a murderer can choose death, solitary confinement or having citizenship revoked and being kicked out of the country (even if they have nowhere else to go).

Where do you go? The only unclaimed territory on Earth is between Egypt and North Sudan (or Antarctica) and no government will have you. And what if a government will have you, and a murderer lives in comfort in another land?

There is a novel called "The Man Without a Country".  Nolan was banished to the U.S. Fleet and was never allowed ashore anywhere.  If the ship he was on was going to a U.S. port, he was transferred to another ship.

This debate again... Ill refrain from giving an opinion because i got kicked out of a fan site i helped create for suggesting life had no meaning. All ill say is quick and easy makes sense. If you want to prevent crime remove crims. Torture and imprisonment is silly.

Executions for capitol crimes are more effective than life in prison. All of that money wasted on one individual who made a decision to forfeit his place in society, money which could be better spent on those who actually need it. As long as the person receives a fair trial I am not going to lose much sleep about their fate. Besides todays definitions of inhumane and of justice in the West are rather skewed.

We care more for the rights of the condemned than for the living, a politician can lead a country to an illegal war and face no consequences, a bank can swindle billions from savers while a small-time fraudster is pursued by all the agencies of the state, more of a fuss is kicked up for animals and the environment than for the people's quality of life.

It is estimated one in twenty-five executed criminals in the US are innocent of the entire crime. Death Row exonerations are another great reason to cut off the death penalty.

For those saying "kill 'em or it costs a lot", housing a prisoner for life will always cost less than an execution due to the 7 appeals and the expensive trials and drugs. And if your ridiculous government cut it's military budget, then maybe you could afford to pay off your massive debts and feed your citizens. But socialism is bad amirite?

If the US cut its military budget by 85%, it would still have the largest military budget in the world. Your country is paranoid of a threat that exists, but is nowhere near as deadly as the US Propaganda pretends. Military bases in South Korea and Germany, illegal listening posts in the US embassy in Switzerland and Germany, claws in every corner of the world that are pointless.

    Sorry, rant over.

I am against the death penalty for the exact reason that I find the American Justice system (or any worldly justice system) to be inherently unjust; the American system I am familiar with, so I will refrain making judgements on other nation's systems.

However, for a similar reason, I am against prisons. Most criminals enter the prison system and come out worse criminals. It is a breeding ground, not a reformatory. We need to seriously rethink our approach to punishment for crimes. I think ancient Israel's system, while impossible in the modern era, had a bit of sense to it. Swindle/steal from someone, you owe them back 120%. Murder was punishable by death (though, obviously there are problems with that today), false witness was punished by a fine (I think) and public shame (and something else, I think, though I'll have to look it up). Adultery was punishable by death, but the husband had to throw the first stone (and only after proof was presented). Obviously the last one is a morality law and not applicable today, but the idea is the same. What you notice is no mention of prisons (which, in a sense, was eminently practical seeing as Israel initially had no central government).

I really think that if we want to stop the death penalty, we need a better alternative than simply life imprisonment. We need to seriously rethink our idea of rehabilitation, undesirables, and habitual criminals.

Why bother with expensive Helium.  Nitrogen will do the job just as well.  Suffocation is not a good way to go, however.

I am against death penalty of any kind.  It is barbaric and a last remnant of the medieval practice of sending people to God for judgement.

I do tend to be practical.  If the state must murder someone, what's wrong with the tried and true method of a bullet or two at the base of the skull.  Quick, cheap, and nearly painless.

Every citizen of any country that executes anyone in my book is guilty of the mortal sin of killing.  I believe that most holy books of any religion are against killing in general and punishment belongs only to God not to man by whatever name your God goes by.  This is an issue of public morals, and we all know how the mob slavers after blood.  Public executions were always attended by a cheering mob.

Agreed. It's like the mass apologies and pardons given out by the post WWII German Government, it doesn't make an innocent's death corrected. I am opposed to all killing of human beings in any situation except where there is no other option (e;g: Hostage Situation, Mass Terror Attack).

There's real simple solution to these botched lethal injection executions, a bullet to the head.  Quick, efficient and dirt cheap.  Of course, there's a lot weak-minded gullible ninny's out there, who seem to think that's cruel and unusual punishment.  It's truly, truly sickening that those type of people care more about the criminal than the cruel and unusual punishment said lowlife put their victims through.  I have zero respect for them and find them truly pathetic excuses for human beings.

^ Think I said that earlier.  I could care less about these punks after they have lost their last appeal.  Further, the appeal process should have the very highest priority in the courts so that incarceration periods are minimized.  Send them all to God.  If they are innocent then let Him accept them into paradise.  The guilty get to go to the other place.

I couldnt care less if every other human suffered eternal unjustofiable agony because i am not them. Practically speaking i raise thrice as a signer of the bullet idea. Tried tested and also honourable and civilized. Closest to death in battle. Injections strike me as needlessly complicated. I once sae a girl rip a chickens head off. Sometimed the simplest solution is the most efficient and logical.
