Best NAM, RHW Mod Tutorials?

I'm just getting into using the NAM and RHW mods but it's so confusing and I've watched a couple videos but have a hard time getting the hang of it. Now, I've got the starter piece down and getting the highway created but getting things like on/off ramps is so confusing and I often choose the wrong on. THEN I have no idea how to connect it all to regular roads and such.

Anyway, long story and all that, but are there good tutorials out there that starts from the basics and moves to more advance options?

Edit: I also should note that some tutorials I have found have been fairly old (something like 3+ years old).

I'm currenting using the latest NAM 32.

Actually, the tutorials from Asteconn, though slightly outdated (from around the time you state; I suspect those are the ones you're referring to) are some of the most complete and basic tutorials in video form that I know of. Fortunately, I was able to watch them on NAM 30, which is much more similar to the videos than the current NAM (32) is, but the ideas are the same, as is most of the terminology (though it's now the Real HighWay Mod, not the Rural Highway).

    I'll give it another look.

Haljackey's Building a City From Scratch is really useful and entertaining.

From a glance, seems interesting. Definitely will check it out tomorrow.

Thanks to the both of you :)

Have fun with those videos.  The Haljackey one was built within the last few months, a monumental undertaking.

Not meaning to double post, but... I'm learning the RHW and... can somebody help me connect these two?

I thought the best option would be a trumpet interchange, but it seems that all the transitions/ramps available are for L2 6C and not L1... am I wrong? ;)

    Right you are!

And also I realized that my NAM install was incomplete: I didn't have any L2 network installed!

Anyway, I'm sorry if I usurped the thread, I didn't mean to do that. I apologize!

I'll open a a new topic on the subject ;)

I made a RHW Interchange guide, you can find it in my signature.

-While many of the guides are a few years old, I have tried to keep it up to date, which included a redo of the Single-point interchange guide after the components were redesigned.

If you have any questions about it feel free to post there or let me know!

-The NAM reference guide (included in the NAM) also has an extensive section on the RHW.

As for my SC4 video series, glad you like it! It's not really intended as a tutorial / let's play thing. It's just me doing my thing, but that doesn't mean you can pick up a few things here and there ;)

I would also like to chirp in and thank you Haljackey for your excellent video series, I'm up to number 8 right now and even though I have been playing SC4 on and off for 10 years there is stuff there that I have learned. Particularly useful was the RHW stuff as I have just recently decided to abandon the MHW in favour of the RHW, although I won't be building the 8 or 10 lane monsters you have as here in Britain we only have 6 lane motorways.

I think you need to get round the UK motorway system more. I don't know of any motorways that are 8 or 10 lanes throughout their entire length, but there are plenty of stretches of 8-lane e.g.M6 as it bypasses Preston, and even 10-lane e.g. M8 before the M80 splits off. Some motorways are only 4-lane for most of their length e.g. M50, M90.

One of the features of RHW is that it can emulate variable-width highways/motorways

The RHW does offer the capability to build wide motorways, as well as more narrow ones. I personally use the RHW-4 and the RHW-6C quite a lot, because they are both quite versatile in use. Usually with the RHW-4 I build stretches of RHW-6S or even 8S to widen up for on and offramps (accelleration and decelleration lanes) and with the RHW-6C, the same story goes for RHW-8C stretches.

The RHW Mod is just a large toolbox with very versatile possibilities.

I don't drive personally so my experience is from just where others have taken me, so I had no idea that we had wider motorways than 6 lane. That has me thinking about possibly wider motorways in my own region. I'm really amazed just how great the RHW is.

Apologies to bump an old topic, but I am planning on creating some new tutorials once I'm happy with my level of competency with the new NAM and RHW stuff. =]

I actually would not recommend starting right away because of all of the new game-changing content currently in-development that's gonna end up replacing a lot of the old content.

Actually, that sounded like I am going to have a separate account for working with the new NAM (33) when it comes out.

I am also planning on making some NAM and RHW tutorial videos once we can get our hands on the NAM 33 Pre-release. Many RHW tutorial videos are really outdated, like pre-NAM 31 outdated.

Agree with you, Compdude, in that most of the videos I found for RHW are dated 2012 or earlier and don't have very many options. (I did find Asteconn's videos to be helpful) There are SO many options now that it is really confusing for a newbie like myself. I'm an old hat at SimCity, but this highway stuff is madness! However, I've managed to build my first highway and add the ramps. I'm getting a little more comfortable with how to drag out the highway and ramps, but I find you always need more space for it then you think you will!

Attached is a screencap of my highway. It's getting some use, so I think it's a good start. I'm not sure I will have the mental energy or patience to build the ring around the whole map that I envisioned, though.  :boggle:

Ring roads (highways) only operate properly if you rig your residential areas to force them on.  One crosstown road and you'll see what I mean.  Sims always take the fastest route with the NAM, and that doesn't necessarily mean the fastest road.  Without the NAM, you get the shortest route as the crow flies.

So what do you mean by rigging your residential areas to "force them on", Nonny Moose? Right now I'm kind of just playing with the highway to make an interesting city, not as much to be optimal for traffic. With NAM, all of my roads are showing as green, no red or even yellow congested areas. I am getting a decent amount of traffic in and out of the city to neighboring areas, though.

With the exception of the intended highway, there must be no other route to work.  This forces the Sims onto the highway.

Using the congestion display with the NAM present, you should use the secondary volume display for a better feel for your traffic.  You can look at individual classes of traffic that way.  I hardly ever use the original congestion display any more because I have become accustomed to interpreting the alternate display.  Just choose the second radio button.
