This is just turning into a comedy. So super skyscrapers for people who own a car from the 1940's to travel to their chosen form of public transport the balloon to get to work which happens to be flipping burgers at the local burger joint in the neighbouring city. I mean comeon people ok I know it's a game but just a tad of realism would not go a miss. They might as well add horseback travel options and teleportation devices.

I kinda wonder if they're holding bigger maps back intentionally.

This first (half) year after release, it's been a common saying that SimCity suffers from a giant problem: Too small maps. The rest of the crap can be lived with, or dealt with otherwise, but the small maps are a deal breaker for many. Meanwhile, EA keep spewing DLC, making the limited space all the more contested by each release. In the end, the noise about the tiny maps are a defining characteristic with the game.

Then, they release bigger maps. Fans, starved for anything bigger than the tennis court we've been dealt, happily squee and start talking positively about the game again. This might spark a second wave of purchases, making the game relevant once again.

Or, more likely, they've painted themselves into a corner with GlassBox, and bugs will become really apparent if the maps are made any bigger. If the agent cap isn't raised, you'll get to a point where the city looks less crowded the higher the population is, because the limited number of sims are spread across a bigger area.

Do you mean "congested", as opposed to "contested"? Just wondering... :lost:

I think both words fit, if my understanding of English grammar is correct (I'm Norwegian, so please bear with me). I meant that there is, at the moment, more stuff you can put in your city than you've got room to put in at the same time. Thus, the various buildings, zones, roads, etc. have to "compete" for the idle land - making it contested.

New DLC to maybe go with the expansion?

That's probably just the Red Cross DLC EA announced.

The building does look familiar to the one pictured above.

SimCity 4, it's not a game; it's a work of art.

I'm glad they are giving some of the money they earned to charity, but i think the only reason EA is doing this is because they want to get rid of all the bad press.

This sounds like an expantion I'd like to buy...

in about 5 years of so when the price is down and i already got the things I REALLY want.

I think it's waay too much of a 'funky' expantion considering there are many 'normal' things still missing. Sigh, at least I won't feel like I'm missing something by not buying it. There's so much in the base game I'd like to see expanded upon that I'm dissapointed that Cities of the Future seems to focus entirely on it's own content.

hmmm, bigger cities are still something they don't understand!. Well, people on YouTube do. I mean, has anyone seen the comments section for this teaser video. Everyone just says BIGGER CITIES. Good for them.

It feels like Maxis is sending a message that it really does not care much about what the players and fans of the Simcity franchise really want. While Maxis may have taken a few steps forward with the Glassbox Engine and the depth of the game, they have taken many steps back in ignoring and disregarding what attracted players to the franchise in the first place. Maxis obviously knows what players want, such as bigger map sizes, an offline mode, etc, but has decided to take a different route. A route that seems increasingly to lead to a dead-end as time goes on.

This can be read as:  "We're not fixing transit, so we're going to bypass it."

EA releases Cities of Tomorrow, can't fix Cities of Yesterday.

This is becoming a big joke.

Well to be fair they didn't bother to fix transit in Simcity 4 either.

True, but at least they let us fix it.

True, but at least they let us fix it.

Which wasn't fixed until 2010 with NAM.

We had almost 6 years of broken transit in Simcity 4.

Transit has been getting better in Simcity 2013 with each new update, so they are doing something with it.

My cities post update 7 rarely have traffic issues.

This looks really exciting! If I discover that I have enough free time on me with Organic Chemistry and Multivariable Calculus this quarter, I might just get SimCity and preorder Cities of the Future EP. The likelihood of me having enough free time is, well...

--Ocram

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

Are the expansions going to be like in The Sims where you can pick and choose, or will we have to get each one?

Pick and choose.

You do not have to get this expansion pack, to play with those who have it.

Everyone still gets to play together regardless of expansion packs.

Anyone else see the launch Arcology from simcity 2000?

up it is a preorder bonus.

Damn now I'm going to have to preorder this.

From Origin:

Get the Launch Arcology content only when you pre-order the Limited Edition.

Space Tourism comes to SimCity with the Launch Arcology! Make extra money by sending your Sims on a fantastic adventure to the stars. Build this all-new landmark and decide which segments of your populace (good or bad) to send into space on each individual launch. Marvel at the launch spectacle as you send your Sims off to an unknown fate.

I HATE MAXIS AND E.A.! I HATE THEM WITH THE POWER OF 10 TRILLION GALAXIES!!!

They tease me really badly with awesome stuff, like the return of the Launch Arco, and they still refuse to make offline modes and larger maps. I HATE THEM!!!

If the agent cap isn't raised, you'll get to a point where the city looks less crowded the higher the population is, because the limited number of sims are spread across a bigger area.

I am sure the modders would know best, but this struck me about the map size. As power struggles to cover the map as it stands (for example) with long streets such idiosyncrasies would become increasingly apparent, leading to what would appear to be a bugfest.

As a result I doubt very much that bigger maps will feature in this DLC. Oh, I also noticed that for some reason DLC is a "forbidden" name for a region (I tried to call one "I hate DLC" and it starred out the DLC bit).

Back on topic - this has little interest to me at $30, most likely translated to £30. Good luck to those who buy it.

(Emphasis mine)

I'd hazard a guess that the Glassbox engine does not scale well. Hell, anyone whom has grown their city big enough can attest to that.

Still, as others have said: I'd prefer bigger maps over a Cities of Tomorrow DLC.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I finally have a successor to Simcity 2000 (Saturn) futurstic building set.

I couldn't agree more. Update 7 really delivered the new and awesome road tool and dramatically improved traffic AI.

Well look on the bright side guys at least Morgan Freeman was speaking in the trailer. :)

Someone said the same on a Facebook group I'm a part of. It's not Morgan Freeman. :)

Until someone can actually find out why there were no bigger maps (with actual proof and not some made up horse hockey) then maybe the gloop that was the bigger map dead horse may get some peace..
