You are right Duke, Here in VA they will bust you hard for speeding. I watch that thing like a hawk and make sure I'm not going over, the most I will risk is 5mph over, but no more!

Most, if not all, Australian police carry guns.

How nice of them to be the only ones....

Hey, it's not just the police with guns! The military is armed too. :P

Seriously though, they're not trigger-happy, have definitely received proper training, and I trust them implicitly, so I have no problem with them being armed for the tiny fraction of occasions where it is vitally important that they have some firepower.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

As far as I know, most Belgian policemen also carry guns.

If you go 30 kph too fast here (let's say 80 instead of 50, 80 becomes 74 because they still subtract a margin of error), you have to pay a fine of 190 euro in the built-up area, 120 if you were driving outside the built-up area.

I've been pulled over a number of times in the States, and in my experience many cops who pull you over for doing 15 or more over will also knock a few mph off of that to cut down on the fines and points, so they'll write you up for only doing 5 over or so.  Here in Japan, EVERYTHING is by the book.  There are no warnings or giving you a deal here, if you screw up, you pay the way the book says you pay.  It sucks really, really bad.  It's easily one of the five worst things about Japan.

On a more positive note, most main roads are very well maintained, and construction is done orderly and in a timely fashion.  They show up, delays are usually about as long as your average red light, and they clear off the roads at the end of their work day, so when they're not there, they're not holding up traffic.  It is awesome.  Amazing. I've never seen anything like it in America.

3006: I definitely agree that police should be armed. Although you get the minor controversy such as the 14 year old who got shot dead by police a few years ago, I believe that guns by a regulated force are a good idea.

There's been a push to introduce tasers, but some people are complaining that tasers can cause cardiac arrest in some people and hence death. You know what else causes death? Bullets from the guns that are being replaced or supplemented by tasers.

I just find this unsettling, If I was a legislator (which I hope to be one day) I'd push for reduction in the police force.

Cops always doing everything by the book is a double edged sword. On the one hand it means you will never get any sort of leniency, as US cops often give... but on the other hand it also means you will never be unfairly singled out, which is also very common for cops in the US to do.

There is simply too much variation amongst our race (that is, all of humanity) for one clear-cut set of rules to make it fair for everyone.  There will always be jerks who can bend/break the rules and game the system, and there will always be those who are unable for any number of reasons to make things work out for themselves.  Most of us are in the massive gray area between them, which makes sense of course, but there's still so much difference between us that it's difficult to say one side is all the way right and the other sides are all the way wrong.  American cops have their strengths measured against those of other nations, and other nations have different strengths when measured against the Americans, or each other.  I wish I could be more specific with examples, but I can't be bothered to find any right now.

I'd rather entrust the citizens of the country then public officials to be the judge.

A lot of them become public officials because they want to make the country a better place.

Precisely. For example the Magistrate here in my borough is not a full time Magistrate. Courts are only open a day or two a week. The rest of the time he is an ordinary attorney trying to make a living. As astro mentioned, he is likewise a citizen and simply doing his bit. Now if public officials are corrupt, that's another story.

Guys, I don't think Larks meant "judge" literally. ;) The point is that it's better to let people make their own decisions than to go crazy policing everything.

Nor do I but the example I chose to use happened to involve a magistrate.

I just had en epic nap. Sometimes when I awake from a nap I feel like I missed an entire week.

As long as I have the freedom to nap I'm happy.  I guess to determine if anybody is truly free, you would have to have a definition of freedom that everybody could agree on, and then determine if it can actually be obtained.  For example, if you are financially 'free', does that mean you are free from money.  Or that you are still a slave to money, it's just that you have a lot of it and are more in bondage to it.

I received in the mail today, a stack of Reece's Peanut Butter Cups.  They are, of course, two-packs.  But the two-packs are put together into large four-packs, so each pack has eight Reece's Peanut Butter Cups in it.  I have a stack of 15 of these four/eight packs (depending upon how you would like to count them).  They are almost impossible to find in Japan, usually we have to order them through FBC-USA or something like that, but now Seiyu carries them, and the best part?  They are FRESH!  With the peanut butter in the middle still, uh... creamy?  Moist?  Uh... well, they're not dried out and crumbly, which is how they usually are when FBC-USA ships them over from Hawaii or California.  It's heavenly, you guys.  There is not a food on this earth that I regard as highly as Reece's Peanut Butter Cups.  Reece's Peanut Butter Cups.

I guess if you live in a place that does not have the candy you like, then you would have to order it through the mail.  If I lived in a place that did not have Reece's Peanut Butter Cups, I would probably order them through the mail.  My only problem is I would not be able to order a lot of them at one time.  I would end up eating them all at one time.

Well, they manage to ship it from the factory to the distribution center and from the distribution center to the store without it melting, so clearly it's possible. :read:

I was thinking it was more a package that they'd leave on your stoop if no one is home, not an envelope that'd be in your mailbox. Although the former might not produce good results on a hot summer day, either. It might be fine in the shade but if it got in the sun, forget it.

You guys when you talk about candies. You better ship some to the Philippines too. The more who eats, the merrier! Hahaha

Speaking of which, I order KitKat from Japan and when they arrive in my house (Japan ----> Philippines), they are in perfectly good shapes. KitKat in Japan has awesome flavors btw. NMUSpidey can attest to this. :P
