I don't understand the fascination women have with flowers. They seem like an utterly useless and pointless gift. I mean, in a week they'll be dried out and wilted and watching that happen is depressing. Don't you want something that will last longer?

Of course, my opinion MIGHT also be colored by the fact that I'm highly allergic to cut flowers and can't be in the same room with them without getting thrown into an endless fit of hacking and sneezing. I had to inspect a warehouse where they store flowers for work once. I was in a walk-in fridge full of them for ten minutes and then I was sick the rest of the day.

My wife is ambivalent about chocolate, but flowers make her day.  Flowers and cooking gadgets.  I got her a microwave (a nice one!) for her birthday a few years ago, and she thinks that it was just the best gift ever.  My co-worker thought that was nuts, but whatever.

I got pulled over by the cops tonight! Luckily it was a random check and I was good to go.

A random check for what?

What you describe is illegal in the United States - here, the cops cannot pull you over without "probable cause", i.e. they need to see you breaking some law. Of course, this can be as simple as not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign, exceeding the speed limit by 1 MPH, etc. So if they really want to stop someone in particular all they have to do is follow them and wait for them to slip up.

Also, chocolate, unlike flowers, is awesome. I don't blame anyone for wanting chocolate!

Random Breath Test probably - checking you're not driving under the influence. They're pretty common on Friday/Saturday nights.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Is it wrong that I'm still hooked on The Wire, even though it has been off the air for about 6 yrs. I don't watch much current programming, but strangely enough I have started to watch Orange is the New Black.

BTW, happy belated Valentines Day Simtroplians!

Never seen The Wire. I have casually been watching Louis on Netflix for the past month or so. That show is funny but it has an odd tendency to prolong awkward moments a tad too long. I have been meaning to watch Orange is the New Black only because one of the writers is from my neck of the woods. I think she went to the same high school as me.

Which is interesting because in the US, police have been known to set up checkpoints where they check everyone going through to see if they look drunk. They cannot, however, ask you to take a breath test unless you appear visibly intoxicated. And even then, they can only breath test you with your consent (because of the fifth amendment saying you can't be compelled to testify against yourself). However, refusing to consent to the test usually results in stiffer penalties.

Cops here have cameras that scan your license plate and automatically look up in the database whether you have a valid registration (amongst other things). They don't need to pull you over check that.

I'll live in mortal fear of getting pulled over here because I have no more extra points on my license before it gets taken away from me and I have to take time off of work to do their stupid two-day traffic safety BS.  If I make it until July, then my points reset and I'm good to go.  The way they have traffic fines and penalties set up here is really, really backwards.

I have a mental image of a Japanese cop stopping someone and yelling "You have exceeded the speed limit! You have insulted your family's honor!". Please tell me that actually happens. :P

I wish!  If that was the way they did it I'd be getting pulled over all the time, regardless the cost to my family's honor!  Although, a very polite man with a reflective vest steps out in front of you, giving you generous room for braking, bows politely and motions politely to the parking lot in which you will receive your (quite literal) $1000 fine.

There was a story a few years ago about a student at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore who successfully thwarted a burglary of his apartment by chopping the intruder's hand off with his samurai sword. A well-maintained katana in the hands of someone who knows how to use it is a very powerful weapon. Forget cutting limbs off, you can cut someone's whole body in half with one swing if you do it right.

You need to have a license to have a real, honest-to-god samurai sword.  If you buy one as a tourist, you must process paperwork in order to take one out of the country.  They are a weapon, and they are a traditional BIG DEAL here.  They have quite a few on display in museums across the country.  Beautiful they are.  Cops don't carry them, though.  They carry guns, handcuffs, pepper spray, pretty much whatever you'd imagine an American cop to carry.  I was doing 33km over the speed limit when I got pulled over.  The fine itself was ¥60,000, and then I had to take a pair of all-day driving safety classes ringing in at about ¥15,000 each.  Now I can't get the gold license (and cheaper insurance rates) unless I can get through the next renewal period without coming afoul of the fuzz.  You can generally get away with 10-20kmh over, but on certain roads you WILL be pulled over.  I never speed on the Odawara-Atsugi Toll Road, the cops patrol that like crazy, but the Tohoku Expressway is like the autobahn and I've had my doors blown off (figuratively speaking) by premium German and Italian machines there.

33 km/h over = 20 mph over. In most places in the US that's just a speeding ticket... and in a lot of places it's also a typical speed for people to be driving. I've been stopped for that (55 in a 35), the fine was about $180 and I would have had to have been caught doing that three times within 18 months to get my license suspended. And that's New York... in New Jersey the state police are unlikely to stop you for anything less than 20 over unless you're also doing something else wrong.

Of course, some places can be more strict. In Virginia, anything over 80 mph (129 km/h) is automatically a misdemeanor offense for reckless driving. On a lot of Virginia interstates the speed limit is 70, so you can get reckless driving at 10 over - which is ridiculous, but the law isn't likely to change since it's a great source of revenue from all the higher fines they get to nail people with.
