I'm leaving on a jet plane in about 16 hours.  I'll no longer be in Japan, sadly.

I accidentally gave you a thumbs up when I was chasing a fly off my screen...actually not the first time something like this happened lol

Will you have the chance to go back? I'm sure it might be too far in the future to think about yet but do you ever plan on say retire to Japan? I find human migration interesting. Most of the people who live around me are in various stages of immigration.

Thanks for the info Duke, that’s pretty cool. Seems you don’t need many, just the right ones like there are. Thanks belong to all of you for keeping this site as great as it is.

I thought about this, and am still thinking about it because though I've thought about this, I still have more thinking to do as to stop thinking about it would mean not to think.

4956: Received a speeding fine in the mail the other day for doing 113 in a 100 zone. $295 fine and 3 demerit points. Hopefully if I write them a letter stating I haven't had an offence in over 3 years and owning up to it, the police will drop it and issue a caution.

Now that is one serious fine. I hope the police will indeed be more understandable. How come issues like that aren't really common my country...

Sheesh. 113 in a 100? That's a bit strict. Usually you can go 10 (mph) over and not get ticketed around here so I'd figure at least 15 kph over would keep you safe. I got pulled for doing about 100 (mph) in a 65 once but the trooper wrote me up as doing 85. I definitely deserved that ticket. I rarely break the speed limit by more than a smidge these days.

Safe travels back to the US, Spidey. I had planned a relocation to the other side of the country scheduled for next month myself. Alas, my roommate had a medical related emergency with his dog and must vacate the west coast, so I'm staying in Pittsburgh, which is bittersweet.

I guess I'm going on the Simtropolis record with this comment:

I was once pulled over doing 93mph in a 55mph, had my car semi illegally searched and "something" was found, however the cop must have had better things to deal with because he came back with a ticket for doing 75 and returned my stuff.  I also was pulled over doing 107mph(though he only clocked me with radar when I was already braking) He gave me 3 tickets, speeding, reckless driving and one for the registration(I handed him the old card instead of the new one) Total fines were $720 and 10 points (12 total points you lose your license, I already had 9) Hired a lawyer as the court date was mandatory, the fine was dropped to $240, the points dropped to 5 but that still left me at the mercy of the judge on whether I could keep my license or not. He proceeded to berate me in front of the whole courtroom but eventually was kind enough to let me keep it.   I paid the lawyer $500 so I still lost a bunch of dough but kept the license. In our area, once the ticket is issued it is very hard to get it reversed; your only real chance is the cop giving you the ticket. In case anyone is wondering, insurance for a guy in his early 20s with more points than you are supposed to have, in NJ which has the highest rates in the country, was very close to $10,000...a year. I can say I learned my lesson and have not had any problems since so insurance is back down to the more normal $2,400 a year (new car)

I thought about this, and am still thinking about it because though I've thought about this, I still have more thinking to do as to stop thinking about it would mean not to think.

I've heard before that Australia is fairly strict with speed enforcement.

In the US, few jurisdictions have speed cameras. Red light cameras are a bit more common. None give you any demerit points, though, they're legally equivalent to a parking ticket.

I try not to speed too much, but I'm usually 5-10 mph in neighbourhoods I'm familiar with. Except when I have to drive in the city.. Chicago's crazy with red light and speed cameras.

Also... Blue! When did you change your name?! I don't like it put it back!!!! :rage:

4963: I normally drive on the M79 to Maryborough to visit my girlfriend (who now lives 2.5 hours away,) but in this instance she was staying in Warnambool so I took the M1 to see her that night, a road that has cameras all over and is 100 between Melbourne and Geelong. I'm used to a road where it was 110.

On my fine they give you the "recorded speed" (so I was actually doing 116km/h) and the alleged speed. They will book you for anything above 2km/h or 2% over if your speed was above 100km/h.

Not judging here philforhockey, but if you had "something" in your car, why were you travelling so fast?

Very simply I was running late for a Midterm and the Professor was one of the kind that would shut the door at the exact time the test was to start, don't get in and you don't get a passing grade.    Without getting into detail the "something" was more of a thing that could be associated with some other illegal thing, though possible to get in trouble for it, it would take some real work to prove it was used for that purpose. So I was completely comfortable with having it, at the time, as it was not used in that way.

Folks, please don't judge me on the speeding, I never would put others at risk. I never drove that way on roads with other people on the road and I never drove that way with someone else in my car, if things went bad they would only go bad for me. It was over a decade and a half ago and many things about me have changed.

@ROFLyoshi I did not think you were judging, just curious as I would be

To all, what do you pay for car insurance?  I'm curious what it’s like outside this country as I have no clue. Does not need to be an exact amount, just in general.

I thought about this, and am still thinking about it because though I've thought about this, I still have more thinking to do as to stop thinking about it would mean not to think.

At first I was all, "who's this now?" but no one can hide from the wee blue hedgehog. Or, ya know, the explanatory signature.

My mom bought an Audi A5 several months ago and I finally drove it today as my car was in the shop. That thing quite simply wants to go fast. No tickies though.

Searching "Wahrheit" gives a lot of noise, "Vahrheit" on the other hand... (I use W/V interchangeably, depending on which one isn't taken). And I can still be stormy! Just not in name :P

Yay!  We made it back and spent the last week get reacquainted with our family and searching for a new car.  We're back in Michigan and we'll be looking for work once my wife FINALLY gets her green card, although I'm gonna try to get published no matter what.

I was looking forward to buying a new car, but the ones I've tried out have been disappointments, to say the least, a bunch of over-worked, abused, pieces of crap.  Since we need three rows, we're gonna look for another Mazda5 (we had a Premacy in Japan).  We were paying about $35/month for insurance in Japan.  Here in Michigan with our no-fault insurance, we're probably gonna be paying between $80 and $120/month.  Michigan has one of the highest car insurance averages in the nation, but the state legislature is considering changing it.

Oh, and I was thinking of the John Denver version.
