4815: Agreed, a bit harsh.

Asked for a promotion at work the other day, ended up getting fired instead. I suppose that's the end of that chapter.

4817.

And I believe that that's kind of harsh. Well, really harsh.

4818: Are you calling Larks harsh or my work harsh?

Sorry, I meant your work. But now that I think about it it would have worked for both.

In other news apparently baseball started. Which means Chicago is playing St Louis twice today. Something tells me the Blackhawks and the Cardinals will win their respective games.

I will root for the Phillies every last individual step of the way, no matter how bad they get.  My uncle once told me "A real Phillies fan will hate the Mets until the day he dies."

We were able to weather the storm in the western half of the state the past couple decades. I suspect you'll be able to do the same. I still hate the Mets. No not really but yeah kinda... if that makes sense.

Betting on sporting events is silly because if there is a house take you will always lose in the long run, and even if there isn't you at best break even.

If you want to gamble, open up an account somewhere and trade stocks. Then the odds are actually in your favor so long as you don't do something stupid you will come out ahead. :read:

4838: The way I heard it is don't bet on who you think will win, bet on who you think has the better odds compared to your chance of winning. Ie. If you think two teams have an equal chance of winning and one is offering a 3:1 return, go for that.

I've had mixed results with betting but I seldom do it. Won $80 on various bets in the World Cup, but I was shattered that I didn't put a bet on Germany to beat Argentina in the final, when I was telling everyone from the very start this would happen.

But some people bet on stuff like pokies and horse events they know nothing about, and I think that's a bit sad.

There is no trick to betting on sports. Simple math shows overall no money can be won since no more money is paid out than is put in.

The thing about gambling is that in the long run it's all just statistics - nobody goes to the casino and manages to not lose money. Nobody makes bets with friends and ends up significantly ahead or behind. Even investment firms who think they're so smart struggle to actually deliver a better return than the market overall.

The only exception is games like poker, where there is a substantial human factor involved and it's a battle of wits, not just a question of statistics. This is why people who are good at poker can make careers out of betting on it. Nobody makes a career out of betting on sports unless they stole an almanac from the future so they know who's going to win. :P

4842: I meant that the odds are always against you, but some people manage to turn a modest profit over time by playing smartly (however it's more of a full time career with the money no better than if you just worked a normal job).

In other news, I am going to a restaurant that does the world's best pizza. No, I'm not in Italy, but rather East Brunswick, where this pizza chef took out a completion overseas for his margharita.

Pizza comes in far too many delicious varieties for their to be a single 'best.'  There's no way I could point to any one pizza I've eaten and declare it the absolute best.  I've actually had some pretty decent pizza here in Japan, up in the backwoods-y tourist area of Karuizawa, Nagano.

When you say "East Brunswick", I think New Jersey, but I assume that's not what you mean. :P

    Lol. Samesies.

I'm not much of a gambler myself but I'll do a little gambling this weekend as I'm attending a bachelor party at a casino in WV.

4846: Lol, East Brunswick is an inner North suburb of Melbourne (whereas I say suburb, I mean neighbourhood). The street that runs through it is our "Little Italy".

I'm also tempted to draw up a little map of where the general ethnic areas are in Melbourne (definitely not in a racist way!) just to show you where people tend to settle. Of course it's not clear cut segregation, as places like Dandenong and surrounds have a melting pot of East Africans, Afghan, Lebanese etc where places like Oakleigh tend to be an established Greek area.

Either way the food was great!

4849: Well, sort of. We have local government areas (mine covers both suburban fringe and vast swathes of mountainous forest) and these governments are responsible for things like garbage, local streets, etc. Most people in the metro see themselves as someone from Melbourne, not Knox or Yarra Ranges etc.

The exception of course, is the city of Brisbane which covers about half the metro area, whereas the local Melbourne government only has 93,000 people. (there are cities on the outskirts that are bigger).

My hometown Toledo, OH would greatly benefit from such inclusive boundaries.  Give a metro area a central vision to follow, instead of Toledo building a new ice hockey/basketball arena downtown while Rossford builds one right next door and Sylvania uses its streets as a money-generating speed trap and Bedford sucks up all the escapees.  Really, most metro areas in America would benefit from such an idea being implemented, but those involved will never give up what little they have while they fight over scraps instead of building something truly great.

Such an approach is taken in some places in the US. Houston and Nashville are both examples I can think of offhand.

But this tends to only happen in states that lack townships. It's a lot easier for a city to annex unincorporated land than it is for it to annex a neighboring municipality.

Also, whenever a metro area extends across a state line (which is quite common for major cities), forget about having one municipal government for all of it since you can't have a municipality that exists in multiple states, and moving the state line is just not going to happen even if it is technically possible.

4852: We have that problem here, but it is amplified by one side following DST and the other not. Gold Coast is a city about 80km south of Brisbane, mainly located in Queensland but the extreme south of it is located in New South Wales, with the border running down the middle of a street! So one side will have buses one one time, and the other not. It can be very confusing especially if you work on one side of the border and live on the other.

It appears one segment of that Queensland/New South Wales border actually has two streets running astride it! I do wonder what exactly is defining that last section of the border before the coast, though. It appears to be a random series of straight lines that don't connect any prominent points or follow any obvious features. It even cuts straight across the airport!

Spatial planning would also solve some issues. This can be done by several townships/cities in cooperation and usually helps avoiding such crazy stuff like building two arenas of the same purpose next to each other in a single metro area....

Over here we got cooperations across state borders in terms of developing together.

Bridges and tunnels across the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn/Queens: 18

Bridges and tunnels across the Hudson River between Manhattan and New Jersey: 6

Guess which one involves crossing a state line and which one doesn't?

The Hudson River divides the two. I've been there.

Philly has three bridges connecting to New Jersey in the city, the Walt Whitman in South Philly, the Ben Franklin in Center City, and the Betsy Ross in Bridesburg.

Since Duke asked a question, so shall I. What's the river they all cross?

Duke, do you know how many bridges/tunnels connected Manhattan to Brooklyn back when they were separate cities? Not exactly crossing a state line, but it still relate to the issue of different municipalities.
