Is "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys a more iconic rock song than Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze"?  I'm not sure I'd agree...

I would say obviously yes. Of course, I heard the Beach Boys plenty as a kid because my father liked them... but Jimi Hendrix I never really heard as a kid because we did not have any records or CDs of his in the house. So I'm not really being objective, it's largely a question of what my parents did or didn't expose me to.

So I just got home from New York City. I went to MoMA. And let me tell ya, few things I have seen were more impressive than Starry Night and The Persistence of Memory. I like museums, and this was really good.

My grampa likes the beach boys but I couldn't name a song by them.

Music is very subjective, for the most part.

The Toledo Museum of Art is one of my hometown's hidden gems. I'd recommend that place to anyone. I think some of them are probably recreations, but there's a lot of original work, and every once in a while they put the mummies on display.

I'm surprised Starry Night is at MoMA and not the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. I've been to the Van Gogh museum but I can't recall if Starry Night was exhibited there. Although, I'm sure it could be loaned out to just about any art museum.

I've been to the baseball museum in Cooperstown (Middle of nowhere in the farm country, which is quite surprising because you never get that impreson when you think of New York)

I look forward to going to the rap museum when they establish it, but aside from those I don't know if I'd visit any others.

It's statements like this that make people from upstate cringe. There is a lot more to New York than New York City. Most of New York is either farms or mountains.

Of course, people in New York City don't like to admit this, which only fuels the flames. :P

There's been some talk about a new High Speed rail line in my neck of the woods. Looks like it will run from London to Toronto and operate at 320km/h. It will be built over 10 years (but I think it will take longer than that).

Big news. Thought I would just discuss it here as there is not a Canadian HSR thread in current events.

What? I don't understand you Duke, what does Hudson River have to do with being the end of the Earth?

Well, the Hudson River is the end of New York City. A lot of people who live in New York City (especially Manhattan) rarely leave the city because their attitude is "everything I need is here, why should I go anywhere else?". And along with this, you have the tendency of New Yorkers to act like they are superior to everyone else and that anyone or anything outside of the city is not worth their time or their presence.

In other words, the personal world of a stereotypical New Yorker ends at the Hudson River - not because there is nothing on the other side, but because they never cross it. You will find adults who have lived in New York City all their lives but have never set foot in Connecticut (which is less than 30 miles away). It's scary.

The Hudson river also doubles as a landing strip.

    Larks, that made me smile.

I find that self-importance to be the mose irritating part of certain New Yorkers, and there are plenty of people who live in Tokyo who think the same things about their city.  Tokyo's not as fun as Osaka and nowhere near as beautiful as Kyoto.  I couldn't move back to that area and live with those people again.  No thank you.

I once found myself in a bad part of Cleveland by taking the wrong exit, witnessed a domestic assault, probably best not to get out of the car, anyway not gonna judge without knowing all the details.

    Spoken like a true Yinzer!

Cleveland does strike me as a horrible place to live (at least, the city itself), although it's not a bad place to visit. There's some cool infrastructure there (but not as much or as cool as Pittsburgh).

Interestingly, I noticed when I saw the new Captain America movie that some outdoor scenes which are supposed to be taking place in DC were filmed in Cleveland. There's one shot where for a second you can briefly see a pair of US 6 and US 322 shields. And there is another shot where they are going over a bridge which is clearly the OH 2 bridge over the Cuyahoga River - you can faintly see the outline of an Ohio state route shield on a sign in the background, and off to the side you can see the US 20 arch suspension bridge - there are no bridges of that type in DC.

Watching movies as an individual who avidly studies geography poses an obvious discrepancy. There was a scene from The Dark Knight Rises that flipped from footage filmed in Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, and (as far as I can tell, New York City) in a matter of a few seconds. I notice stuff like that and have to get over it. Which actually isn't all that hard to do.

I had a friend who went to the Art Institute of Pittsburgh many moons past.  It was always fun visiting him because Pittsburgh really is an amazing city.  Now, my brother lives in Cleveland (or at least near Cleveland), and I can honestly say there are worse places in the world than Cleveland, OH.  All of Ohio kinda gets a bad rap for not being as amazing as NY or California.  Of course, Cleveland is home to the Indians, and that team is vile...

Never been to the States so I really cannot relate much to the current topic but I wouldn't mind someone from his forum sponsoring my trip to USA, in fact they are very well appreciated. :P

Speaking of which (I am speaking in behalf of my readings and such related input), wasn't Ohio famous for steel production before? Steel is the only thing that comes to mind when I talk of that state.
