To be fair, you may be correct as far as Australian copyright law is concerned. I am not versed in that. All I know is that in the US (where both Saturn and I live), what you describe is unambiguously illegal.

You would think the patent has expired by now, how else can companies like hyperkin make clone Nintendo consoles?

The patent on the Game Boy Advance does not expire until 2021 (20 years from the filing date).

As for the NES, it appears the last relevant patent expired last year, so there's no more of that to worry about... but since some elements may be protected by copyright (which won't expire until after we're all dead), you have to watch out for that as well. This article from 2005 has some discussion on this matter.

And of course, the games themselves are copyrighted, which is really more the issue here.

My Game Boy Advance is the most up to date handheld gaming system I own (minus my smartphone).

I would one day like to get a new one to experience a backlight, the Advance was the last Game Boy not to have it (Game Boy Advance SP did).

I got my 3DS when Link Between Worlds came out.

Let me tell ya, I'll be camping outside GameStop for that.

I use 4 emulators. Nintendo and Sega, most prominently.

BUT I DO OWN THE GAMES FOR THEM.

Kay, saying this now before there's too much stray: while we can discuss copyright law, any discussion related to piracy directly, including but not limted to how to do it, whether to do it, or who is doing it - is not allowed.

I got a Wii U. My Wii Broke and the U is backwards compatible, so I replaced it with that.

I still never use the thing unless I have friends over. I'm excited for the first HD versions of Mario Kart, Super Smash Brothers, and of course Zelda.

A lot of games have been cloned or remade, and sometimes companies will release them for free. There's also Nintendo's Virtual Console which lets you play most of the retro games on their newer consoles.

They could have a deal with Nintendo allowing them to make consoles in return for Nintendo taking a share of the profits.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

So I'm confused as to how this is legal then because the front is a Game boy advance player.

Remember that we are talking civil law, not criminal law. This means that for you to get in trouble, the owner of the intellectual property has to sue you. Most likely Nintendo would win if they sued the manufacturer of that device... but they haven't done so becuase they have deemed it not worth the bother. Nintendo is not manufacturing GBAs anymore, after all, so they lose no revenue from someone else making them. I'm sure they would much rather go after pirating of their games.

I got a Wii U. My Wii Broke and the U is backwards compatible, so I replaced it with that.

The sucky part about this is that you lose all your save game data. Which is why I really wish that newer consoles still used memory cards rather than only letting you save the game on their internal hard drive. This method means you cannot play the same saved game on more than one console, and also means that if the console dies your data dies with it.

I'm excited for the first HD versions of Mario Kart, Super Smash Brothers, and of course Zelda.

Blech. I'll take the original of any game over some silly "HD" remake any day.

What about the infamous Vii made by a company called Chintendo? Can't even make these things up!

With super compelling games such as "super move fun", "catch fish" and "fry egg".

    chintendo-vii-lead.jpg

And yes Chintendo marketed it with ads too.....

    Or the WiWi?

The Wii was a magnet for infringement there are so many copycats out there to name, most cheap and tragically made.

Chintendo makes me laugh.  "Chin" in Japanese means penis.  That means it's a penis-tendo.  Hilarious.

Also, I think that the chick at the beginning of that commercial playing baseball must be wearing the knock-off-yet-still-totally-Chinese-authentic Ne Yor Thankees baseball cap.

I'm not a big fan of remakes. Like, Wind Waker HD, for example. I beat the GameCube version all the way through. I probably would play Majora's Mask HD, just because its my favorite game ever. (Yes, higher than EarthBound).

Larks, the stuff you're talking about is all from China. In China there is little to no enforcement of any laws related to intellectual property. While Nintendo could easily get all that stuff shut down in Japan, Europe, Australia, and North America, in China they can't stop it because the legal framework necessary either isn't in place or doesn't function.

I would like a Vii by Chintendo though. Would be an interesting paperweight.

I don't even think it is heavy enough to be used as a paper weight, it looks like it would carry the same weight as paper.

With regards to the "Vii", bear in mind that while it mimics the Wii's physical appearance, it cannot play Wii games and doesn't actually function like a Wii does. So it probably isn't actually infringing on any patents - it looks similar but the similarities end there.

3387: This reminds me of an unfortunate case where a Dane told some Norwegian doctors that he was a haemophiliac after having an accident. The Norwegians, not realising the slight difference in language thought he was saying that he was a homosexual, and convinced the man that there was nothing wrong and sent him home.

A lovely conversation here on 10000 posts.

And, if I'm not mistaken, "Nintendo" means "electric game". So does "tendo" mean "game"....

I'll let the Japanese speaker here confirm, but Wikipedia says that it roughly means "leave luck to heaven".

I doubt it means "electric game" - remember, Nintendo started in the 19th century as a company making playing cards.
