I want one, but mom's allergic to them so I can't get one yet. Perhaps when I'm on my own then I'll get one. Will have to hide it when the parents visit though.

They want me to make a signature!?

If you listened then you had to hear about him talking about going behind congress and issuing an executive order to raise the minimal wage by $3 further eroding profit margins for small business.

Still a lower minimum wage than we have, and our small businesses seem to manage just fine.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Minimum wage in Belgium is 1500 Euro (not decided by the government but by the social partners), in the US it's 1000. Even the UK has a minimum wage that's 250 Euro higher than the US. When adjusted for purchasing power, the difference is less, but still significant. A European country without minimum wage is Germany (15% of the population earns less than 8,5 Euro), but the difference here is that Germans who have a job with a wage of 4 Euro/hour get additional benefits (the Hartz IV-system - although it's still almost nothing). A minimum wage of 8,5 Euro (11 dollar!) will be introduced in 2017.

2804: Or just pass it on to consumers. The price hikes are rather negligible.

Or rather do what many business do here and work the game. Minimum wage doesn't apply until one is 20 and certain pay rates are for different ages. Hence a lot of people empty juniors to pay them less.

Wasn't it Henry Ford who said something along the lines of "you should pay your workers enough to buy the products they make"?

He definitely said this: "There is one rule for the industrialist and that is: make the best quality goods possible at the lowest cost possible, paying the highest wages possible."

And despite his politics, he did at least know how to run a business well.

I think that's one of the quotes from Civ IV.  I love so much that they got Leonard Nimoy to read them.  I play with the sound up so I can hear him

Let's be honest here. Henry Ford didn't pay his workers high wages because he thought it was "the right thing to do", he did it because for him it was a clever business strategy: make everyone want to work for you, and then you can hire and keep only the best, most productive employees. In turn, you end up a higher quality product than your competition, and make up for the higher pay by not needing as many workers, since you can fire anyone who underperforms and replace them instantly.

Nonetheless, it is a valid point that if the average worker can't afford to buy the products he's producing, you're going to have trouble selling them. Higher wages may increase costs in a way that is immediately apparent to the employer, but in the broader picture they boost the economy. An extra $2.85 an hour for every minimum wage employee is an extra $114 a week they can spend, which in turn is an extra $114 of stuff that gets sold. The money finds its way back to business owners.

Little known fact: Henry Ford sued the Chicago Tribune for calling him stupid. He lost.
