I wouldn't be surprised if Detroit ends up a true ghost town years from now.

897: Camden, NJ?

Did you mean hell? Oh, sorry, sometimes it's hard to tell the differance between Camden and Hell.

(898)
Yep. Or Detroit. Or Baltimore.

Hey, Baltimore is developing quite well in the Inner Harbor areas. But with any city you can't stray far from the touristy areas.

Detroit.... If I said it has seen better days, I would take that back as an understatement.

Philadelphia should be America's capital of school and church closings. Granted, a church closes for every 20 schools that close, but whatever. It's bad all around. I saw on the Philly news a landowner is getting sued over an unsafe church steeple. St Bonaventure's Catholic Church in hel- or, North Philadelphia has been deemed unsafe as shingles and slate fall from the tower at high frequency rates. Look the church up if you want, it's beautiful, but any abandoned place is sad, always. St Bon's has been closed for 20 years now, and it looks like its end is near for a beautiful building...

I could rant on Philadelphia Church closings forever, but I'll stop after I say that my favorite piece of architecture other than Notre Dame in Paris is Christ Memorial Church in West Philadelphia, another church that closed after its tower collapsed in 2004. The property sits empty with signs saying "Don't go in here" and stuff like that along the doors under the grand Gothic arches of the church. From what I hear there is a homeless shelter in the building there right now. The trouble is that 75% or more of people wouldn't go in that thing. There's a sign outside saying service will return ASAP. Problem is, it's been almost 10 years.

I feel a rant coming on...

This goes for any city, but I'll use my hometown, once again, as an example...

WHEN will they realize that places like St Bonaventure and Christ Memorial is what makes Philly special? When your local masterpieces start to rot away after abandonment, then you look run down then once it goes down, your neighborhood looks worse than it already is. Argh! I'm thinking that in 10 years, St Bon's will be a piece of history and Christ Memorial will be a pile of rubble. That's depressing! Those places that Get abandoned really add so much to neighborhoods, it's what a neighborhoods charm is. And when the neighborhood loses that charm, the area is a worse place without that vibe.

Overall, abandonment, anywhere, not just here, but a lot is here, is sad, it affects everywhere in the world, it endangers lives, and just isn't what cities need. If we would develop and preserve our landmarks better...

Detroit is a terrible, suffering place is like a recurring theme here.  I feel like we've covered this ground before.

Also, riding the train in from the suburbs to the waterfront in Baltimore, you ride through some pretty horrifying places, but I think Detroit has Baltimore beat for urban nightmares.  Detroit's is just about all-encompassing.

The worst I've seen in Baltimore was at least visually worse than the worst I've seen in Detroit - more buildings abandoned and/or really falling apart, whereas in Detroit it seems most of those buildings have been turned into vacant lots.

Even two years is a long life for a thread IMHO considering that some don't make it that long.

He also said that people who are at different countries are communists and stupid.

Just a racist troll. We are all citizens of Earth, so comments like this doesn't make any sense.

"If you try to please everybody, you often times end up pleasing nobody, especially yourself. When somebody offers to do a favor for free, like making a mod for SimCity 4, you shouldn't be overly critical of something generously given to you. In other words, you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth." - Twilight Sparkle after playing SimCity

There was a problem. It was dealt with. No further discussion called for.

In other news, I am a few hours away from being in Cleveland, where I shall be spending the weekend.

It's just like any city, has good parts and bad parts. However, in some the bad parts get more of a reputation than the better parts, which isn't fair to the cities known as bad places but do have nice districts.

Cleveland definitely has some nice areas and some ghetto. I rather like many parts of the city but I am personally never going to return there. I had bad experiences the last two trips to that city. I swear it's probably the result of my being from Pittsburgh which sounds silly but it's hard to ignore too.

I always found Pittsburgh a bit un-American, since it has no grid. Looks prettier on aerial photo's, because it is somewhat closer to European cities (although that kind of sprawl is still something North-American).

With the winding, often 1-lane-with-2-way-traffic roads here in Japan, I often yearn for the simpleness of the grid in my hometown of Toledo, OH, of the wide, straight avenues and almost-as-wide side streets and all their intersections with their beautiful, spectacular open sight lines and largely reasonable speed limits.  That said, the mountain road I drive to work almost everyday?  Wow.  Seriously, it's unbelievably good.
