So many people here like geography...never seen the likes of it before....

I guess only people who have a certain degree of interest in geography will even look at SC4, let alone play it...

Been there a few times, just the state is insanely busy when Nascar is in town.

848: On the contrary, geopolitics fascinates me. The concept that borders can change just by events, and there's a lot of history. Think examples like the Schwesig Plebiscite, where people voted to which land they wanted to join. Also the straight line that divides Canada and the US near Seattle-Vancouver, why is that so? Why not a few miles north or south? It all tells a story.

A 10 lane highway is very high capacity. But not here, the EDSA is a 10 lane highway, but it's sooo jammed. The usual cause:

Our bus drivers need to be more discipline! This doesn't happen in other countries! :(

    852. They don't have too many highways hereabouts. Main roads they have.

In my hometown the highways were very easy to use, but they generally were just of the 2 lane in each direction variety.  The ones leading into downtown Toledo have more lanes, of course, but it's not exactly a main city.

Where I am now, you have to travel nearly an hour to get to a real highway.  It's not free, though.  None of the highways are free in Japan.  They're not especially fast either.  I was shocked to get on the Odawara-Atsugi Toll Road only to find that the speed limit was 70.  That is, km/h.  I-75 in Michigan is 70 mph!  When I tell people how fast we drive back home, they're alternately jealous of the time one could save and appalled because that speed is ludicrous and crazy or some junk.

851: What fascinates me more is that you have a 10 lane highway jammed in between buildings like that.

Actually the building the middle of the road is a station of the Metro Rail Transit, which runs through the entire length of EDSA. Undisciplined buses and access to establishments are the main causes of jams on EDSA.

I was shocked to get on the Odawara-Atsugi Toll Road only to find that the speed limit was 70. That is, km/h. I-75 in Michigan is 70 mph!

Fun fact: the speed limit in the EDSA highway is just 15 km/h, while our limited access toll highways are 100 km/h. I classify EDSA a so-called slow-way. :P

855: I was more referring to the buildings on either side of the freeway. Even that being said, this is a freeway in Perth with a rail line in the middle. Look how wide it is!

    como-kwinana-freeway-south-oct-2012.jpg

And 15km/h? How do they justify that?

Well, there is no speed limit in EDSA, but due to the common traffic jams that take place there, its average speed limit is 15 km/h.

There are times when I travel at that highway, the speed is 60 km/h, so it's just the traffic jams that make it go 15 km/h. ;)

In my village the main road (a normal two lane bidirectional road of a curving nature) will have people speeding faster than 50 mph regularly. The nearby A road (well it could be called a highway, but not a Simcity style freeway) has four lanes and they go quite fast

Bus drivers in EDSA are soo undiscipline and cause jams. They stop in the middle of the road to get last minute passengers that never made it to the bus stops. And also, there is a strict enforcement there in the EDSA highway that buses must not get out of the bus lane. (defined by the yellow marking) Yet, they still get out without being caught.

Here the bus drivers are pretty cautious. If you miss the bus, you've missed the bus.

863: Or has happened to me, "oh you pressed the button clearly indicating you were getting off and you're standing, but I'm going to drive completely past where you want to get off and not let you off till the next stop".

Some people are just too daft to function.

Some of the roads around me prompt me to wonder how bus drivers can navigate buses along them to begin with.

This remark makes me think about highways in the old DDR. It was possible for Westerners to use the highways, but you were not allowed to leave them and you needed to follow specific routes. Some parts were permanente Baustellen, which means 'constant roadworks'. Speed was limited to 10 km/h. It was of course an excuse to stop Westerners and make them pay a lot of Deutschmarks. Other than that, there were also highways where you could only drive 15 km/h because the road was too bad:

    a4_3.jpg

The interesting thing is: some highways in the DDR were built with money from the BRD! The West considerably sponsored the DDR (inmates made IKEA-furniture, for example).

Edit: quite amazing: there has been written an academic book about highways in the DDR, a cultural history work! (Material culture and the everyday life is a very important area in history nowadays).

It amazes me how LA has gigantic highways, yet they still find a way to clog them up.

The thing about Los Angeles is that it doesn't have much in the way of public transit (although they are working to change that), so everyone pretty much has to drive everywhere. Contrast that to New York City, where the subway system is how most people in the city commute.
