If you're going to vist the US and go to an amusement park, visit Hershey Park and Cedar Point, they have awesome rides, plus at Hershey you don't need to pay extra for their water park!

I live near Dorney Park in Allentown. It's cheaper and i find the roller coasters at Dorney better and faster. Plus you don't have to pay extra for the water park as well.

The be-all end-all to roller coaster parks is Cedar Point in Ohio.  People who think there's nothing to do in Ohio have never been there, to the Hocking Hills in the southeastern part of the state, or experienced a Buckeyes college football game in The 'Shoe.  I miss football so much in Japan.  It makes me want to cry in the fall.

I don't think I'll be able to, given the extra security recently added.

I'm still a big fan of amusement parks and definitely roller coasters. Now I will list the parks I've been to;

Kennywood Park - West Mifflin, PA

Idlewild Park - Ligonier, PA

Hershey Park - Hershey, PA

Walt Disney World - Lake Buena Vista, FL

Disneyland - Anaheim, CA

Knott's Berry Farm - Buena Park, CA

Cedar Point - Sandusky, OH

Australia's Wonderland - Somewhere outside of Sydney

Also various spots up and down the Jersey shore.

I was far too young to properly remember attending either of the Disney parks. Cedar Point definitely has some top notch coasters and if you're a fan, you should check it out. Hershey park reminded me a lot of Kennywood Park. Both are great. Kennywood has some of the more revered older coasters. The Jackrabbit has always been my favorite. The borough I currently live in, West View, had what was apparently a wonderful little amusement park until it closed in the late 70's. Now the site is occupied by a strip mall. The park closed as it could not compete with Kennywood which had ample room for expansion. West View park did not have that option as it was surrounded closely by the neighborhood. My former roommate had, in the back yard of his parent's house, an old concession stand from West View park that he used as a clubhouse. It was one of the few remaining entities from the park. Unfortunately, when his parents moved out the new occupants had the stand dismantled and removed. It probably could have been declared a landmark, but I'm speculating on that.

Extra security forces about does not mean you can't visit the US.

No, but my parents would be extremely discouraged. Me too. My whole family is.

820: Yeah, I've visited Wonderland, except it closed down a few years ago.

At least my town is home to the oldest roller coaster in the world (that's still running, and yes it's older than the Coney Island Cyclone).

It's not unheard of for people in the US to say that something is biggest/oldest in the world when really it's only the biggest/oldest in North America. We tend to ignore the rest of the world, you see. :P

Because we're close to geographically isolated.

826: How so? Try imagine living in a city of 1,000,000 people but the next major town with a population of over 100,000 is 2,100km (1,300mi) away. That's isolation.

We're not talking about geographically isolated in the population density sense (although the western half of the continental US absolutely is like that), but rather in the sense that the United States controls a huge chunk of the North American continent and only has two neighbors of significance that it shares it with, one of which is for the most part culturally rather similar - distinctly different from Europe where there are many different prominent countries in close proximity to each other.

Now, granted, Australia has the lacking in neighbors thing going even more than the US does. But Australia is not a large or powerful enough country to be self-contained like the US is, and so Australians see foreign influence on things in their day to day lives a lot more than Americans do.

829: Oh granted we are not a superpower, but we are arguably the largest country influence wise, when you compare it to New Guinea, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, New Caledonia or even New Zealand.

Also, "it took them 40 minutes to locate Canada on the map".

Geography is a subject that the majority of people here seem to find to be somewhere between mildly boring and "I'd rather stab my eyes out with a dull pencil than sit here and learn this". So, yeah, you will find plenty of dumb Americans who have no concept of it due to having paid as little attention to it in school as they could get away with.

The same thing could be said of most subjects, actually...

I want to add a 0 to the end of this post in the oddest way.

As an American, I don't feel nearly as stupid as people say my countrymen are.  I don't remember meeting a lot of stupid people during high school or college, either.  It could be that I'm the consummate optimist and would much rather see the good side of everything than the bad.

My favorite subject in school is actually geography. It is still my favorite subject now. I'm most interested in climatology and topography, that's why I uploaded maps onto the STEX.

I never understood why people in high school thought geography was difficult or stupid. I thought it was one of the most easy subjects (I once had a 99% on my exam, I'll never forget the word 'segregation', because that's the word that I wasn't able to find on my exam). But yeah, I think the same of history. I was very good at it, but so many people had really bad grades for history, or didn't even understand the classes.

Ah, geography. I really like it, especially maps and stuff, but I'm actually pretty bad at it. I mean, I'm able to locate most big countries, but when it gets to, say, locate important cities here in Germany, I have problems. And I'm really sad because of it. It makes me feel dumb, just in the way Duke said it. But it should actually be possible to better that up by learning consistently. Well, I'll see.

Not only am I good at geography, I rather like it. I can study maps for hours and of course Google Maps has eaten up a lot of my time over the years.

What I don't get is why people find geography boring. This is the world we live in and it would seem to me that most people would want to know how to navigate their way about it.

I suffer from that too. It's an OCD symptom, which is something I have. But I got to put a zero at the end.

I love geography. I'm the 5th grade geography bee champion, and got straight A's in said subject. People don't like it, but I don't care what other people think about school. I go my way, and my way likes geography.
