EDIT: I read that list and got a laugh. We have all those except 5 (this annoys me greatly), 14, 19, 24, 27, 34, and well obviously 35.

And for the record, "do you split bills" are the 4 words I despise most of the English language.

Not really an accurate list, we've got most of that in Europe, as far as I know. I wonder in what country the author was staying :P Linda Lönnqvist said it most accurately: "Haha, where in Europe did the author go? Prison?"

We don't have 5, 14, 16, 19, 24, 27 (asking a split check really is not done), 35. Some things like American candy or bagels are hard to find, but really, we have them (somewhere).

The personal space issue depends on the country and on the person. In Belgium, people who speak French generally kiss each other (also men), but in Flanders it is less common (most men here think it is weird to kiss each other).

What are the kissing habits in the US of A?

They usually end up with a smack in the face, maybe even broken bones depending on the person.

Never been kissed by someone outside my family. Can't judge, then. I'm kind of a social outcast...

But I really do agree that the media at least makes it seem irrelevant.

Kissing habits vary a bit generationally here. Older people are often inclined to kiss family on the cheek as part of greetings if the pair of people is male-female or female-female, but never if it's male-male (that is a part of greetings in France that particularly freaks Americans out). This is also, mind you, strictly among family, not among friends.

The younger generation is even less inclined. We commonly give hugs fairly casually in male-female and female-female pairs, and sometimes even in male-male pairs. But kissing is strictly romantic/sexual in nature to us and you will never see young adults doing it to each other in any way unless that is the implication.

Yeah, you clearly don't like kissing :P Where I live it is normal to kiss a friend (just one kiss), but male-male is considered strange. We also kiss in my Belgian family, but not male-male. In my Greek family, on the other hand, there's a lot more kissing :P

Larks: They don't do hugs in Florida, huh?

I also suppose there are varying degrees of "casual". Under normal circumstances you would not walk up to a stranger and hug them, but at Comic Con this totally happens. :P

Normally the hug schedule among the young crowd is:

    Boyfriend/girlfriend: whenever you want

Family: greeting and parting and possibly also other times

    Friends: greeting and parting

Acquaintances who you've spent some good time talking to: parting

Co-workers: parting if out after work, never in the office

Where I work in the summer, it is normal that you greet all the colleagues (most are women) when you arrive at the office in the morning, and this involves kissing. Only one colleague prefers shaking hands :P Seems like hell for an American :P

It's nice here when they bow to you.  Then you don't have to shake someone's hands and risk spreading germs.  But the kids, all the sticky, little 5th and 6th graders want to shake your hands, and you don't know WHAT they've touched.  Yuck.  I wash my hands like mad after every class.  They're cute and classes are fun, but they repulse me at the same time.

Last year (and next week) I was an assisstant teacher at a one week morning vacation Bible school class, and we had everyone from grades1-6. And let me tell you - they were mostly pretty loud. The church has he sanctuary and then a big building full of other rooms attached, and they were pretty hyped for summer, do 3 staff members were needed in each room, and guess who was in the room where one fled off. Yup. Me.

I'm not much of one for kissing.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Here in Germany, kissing is rather rare. Shaking hands is more common.

From Germany to Switzerland. It's amazing how trains are such a defining element of the Swiss culture. Their punctuality is legendary, the Swiss station clocks also highlight this: the second hand makes a full turn (it slides, it doesn't tick) in 58 seconds, then stops, and at 60 seconds, the minute hand advances, and the second hand starts turning again. Trains leave on the full minute. It seems they are very proud of it.

Public transportation in my city is crap. The trolley line is expanding but very slowly. The buses are mostly on time but it's not guaranteed. I was late for a shift once because my bus came a full 7 minutes early. I was pretty upset that day.

Try Allentown buddy. Here you have to sometimes wait 1 hour for a bus and with all the construction and 2 new skyscrapers being built in the city, traffic is garbage. Philly is even worse. It takes me 45 minutes to get from Allentown to Philly. But another 30 just to get to Center city due to the Schuylkill expressway. But traffic here is like a parking lot.

Metro-North intentionally makes trains depart from Grand Central Terminal in New York one minute after the times listed on the board and on printed schedules. This is done so that people running for the train thinking they have time to catch it have a better shot at actually doing so, and in the process to discourage people from running for it who won't actually make it.

How many times have you been on the Schuylkill expressway? It's way worse than the subways

If you're scared of a little broken glass there are going to be a lot of interesting things you'll miss out on seeing.

Last time I actually rode it was in December 2005, but the Philly subway is cool. Well, except for the fact that SEPTA decided it was a good idea to sell naming rights to Pattison station. :noway:

Aside from my grandma no, however in the event of a tragic situation, someone losing someone or death or pending or anyother event deemed depressing, hugs as a sign of emotional support are acceptable.

Aside from that no, we just nod heads and point and say sup, daps if friendly enough.

479: Yeah that clock thing weirded me out when I was there. And funny you should say that, I was on several late trains in Switzerland!

Our metro is somewhat inconsistent... I was stuck at a station for an hour because of a grassfire and no replacement buses were run, despite being directed to the bus bay twice. Complained and got my ticket refunded for me and my brother though.

Broken beer bottles are nothing.Wait until you come across a syringe on a platform, methheads screaming on the other end of the carriage, as well as the general people who always try to ask me for a smoke for some reason. Usually they look underage, and it disgusts me.
