Actually, Burger King does exist in Australia, but they are known as "Hungry Jack's" because the name "Burger King" was already trademarked by someone else in the country before they expanded there.

Oh I see. Yoshi bluffed me.

Starbucks isn't that popular in Australia. We know what good coffee tastes like, and Starbucks ain't it.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

575: We have them in the city, but I'll only get a frappuccino from there. I'm partial to the Caramelatte that Gloria Jean's do.

I'll take a local cafe anytime, and there's an abundance of them here.

We mostly have Peet's Coffee & Tea here, though Starbucks is almost as common. I do prefer Peet's though.

577 at work we get instant coffee and tea though they have milk there. at home one tends to drink it black both, as milk is expensive and i don't have a refridgerator. however a while ago I tried a machine coffee at the place I used to live and that was quite fancy I must say. Took simply ages to make tho

I've only been to Starbucks when I was in Prague. At that time there were no Starbucks shops in Belgium, so for many people Starbucks was something a bit mythical. Now that they're in Belgium I don't go there anymore (I know where to get coffee that's better and cheaper).

Something not quite related but nevertheless still interesting:

Brewing Controversy Over Proposal to Make Water Cheaper Than Beer

Ah well, but Czech beer is nearly the same as water anyway, haha. Makes me think of the middle ages and the early modern ages where beer was the water of today (beer was clean, water was not, so people - including children - drank beer). Belgian beer is generally a lot stronger, also the reason why it is known as a 'wife beater' in the UK: a lot of Brits drink Belgian beer like they would drink any other beer. This obviously results in serious drunkenness.

So Czech children of today can still help their families save money by drinking beer, right?

Fortunately, I live in a more normal part of the world.

Melbourne has a very large coffee culture. I love coffee at 14 so its widespread here.

Starbucks coffee! Nup. 7-11 coffee! Nup. Local Cafe. Yes!

584: Manchester Press in the CBD is an interesting cafe. Just throwing a recommendation.

    588. I drink coffee and beer. Beer is still clean, but water is of better quality these days. I still recommend beer over water because it energises and vitalises better. And yes Czech beer is pathetic. I drink Yorkshire Tea as well. Used to drink copious amounts of cola. Not much these days too expensive.

Thanks for the refresh of the preschool curriculum.

@ Muck, Pirates are in first for the wildcard, Can they at least make it over .500 for the first time since 1992?

Last time they were this far into the season over .500, you have to go back to 1999 where they fell under it on July 1st and ended the season 73-83. (.484) in 3rd.

That was also A-Ram's rookie season.

How the heck should I know? Yeah? But seriously, I hope so. God I hope so! However I'm pretty certain the Pirates were above .500 past this point the last 2 years. A quick check at MLB's website shows they were 4 games over on this day last year, so... where are you getting your stats?

The Phillies suck, but I watch them anyway. It's part of being a Philadelphian, staying with them, even though crap like last night happens.

It would be nice to see the other PA team make it, particularly because of their not-so-good record the past 20 years.

But I stick with my other teams I like: the Pad's and the O's

I always find it interesting when someone is a fan of a team from an area they've never lived in. Usually that doesn't happen, it tends to require some special dissatisfaction with the local team.

596: Like how the older generations of Chinese Sinkies used to cheer for the PRC soccer team when SG played against them.

But hey, it still happened as recently as three years ago:

RGS students from PRC cheered for China in YOG table-tennis final between Singapore and China

SG's population is now made up of more than 50% immigrants. We have a special term for them: FT (Fallen Talent).

Locals are dwindling due to a combination of a lack of newborns as well as high emigration rates (to Australia, UK and US chiefly).

The whole place is turning into a Dubai.

    .

2011 I think they were over .500 until that 19 inning game in Atlanta which was definitely after the all star break or rather, 4 or 5 games after that. Right now they're one out away from being 17 over. Season high.

Or perhaps their local area doesn't have a team.
I can't think of a local team I don't support, minus AFL (where they have 10 teams in my state alone).

    Close to a milestone!

Yeah I know all about supporting really bad sports teams. I go for Melbourne FC (Australian Rules) and they are like watching witches hats play football.

600 (Edit: ^ the 2 posts above me change your numbering please)

Yeah, even in as strict a country as mine, the legal drinking age is only 18. I think US has among the highest legal drinking age (doesn't stop teen alcohol abuse from being a rampant social problem there)

Trivia: in my country, any person found in possession of more than 500g of cannabis or 1,000g of cannabis mixture = mandatory death sentence
